There's nothing really advanced about it, the other team takes a million shots when he's on the ice.

link?

How was his powerplay time undeserved? Is shotblocking his most known skill or is that again just part of your agenda? He's known for playing a quality 2 way game with elite puck retrieval skills.

Yakupov can do those things, but can't put them together at the NHL level. Russell can.

I asked for a link to prove your ridiculous overstatement on how many shots get by, not proof that he's an elite shot blocker.

This somes up HF mains. Oilers make a good deal, people want to come here and complain about them, have nothing legitimate to complain about, so throw out this sort of nonsense.

This is a good deal for Edmonton. Not one reasonable argument in this entire thread to suggest otherwise. "Oilers gonna Oil" essentially in the words of everyone against this deal. :shakehead
You didn't. Also calling shot-blocking "elite" is missing the forest for the trees.

Last 3 seasons his shots against /60 relative to his team is 110 out of 118 defenders who played 3,000+ minutes. Even with the amount of shots he blocks, it's still terrible. Shooting gallery.

This^. The kid has showed all the potential in the world, but if he doesnt turn out to be Crosby v2, the Oilers have moved backwards.

A ton riding on him and hes only played 45 career games.

This really shows how many people are willing to come on here just to bash the Oilers, while knowing nothing about the team. If you think the roster moved backwards, you either have no idea who was on their roster 15 months ago, or you're just here to flame away.

Lol at some of the synopsis on this thread! If you want to actually see Kris play he is on now. Looks fantastic with the oiler forwards.

Peace out!

Looked good tonight, it's also clear that Nurse is not ready for full time NHL duty, so signing Russell was a smart pro-active move.

Looking good in a preseason game against this year's Vancouver Canucks doesn't really change what's been said, though.

Huh?

He's also a bad hockey player

Not sure what direction EDM is trying to go this season

Well, atleast if Edmonton gets hemmed in their own zone like they have most recent years they have someone who will just jump infront of pucks.

Seriously its a fine gamble, and man must Russel hate his agent right now.

Enjoy being trapped in your own zone some more

If you go through the thread you can find many more of these gems!

Why do you think the last one is a gem? All those shot-blocks aren't happening at center ice. Over the last 3 seasons, for defensemen who've played 3,000+ even strength minutes, Russell is 99th out of 118 (31.03/60) in shots against per 60 minutes of ice-time. Relative to teammates he's 110th out of 118 (2.50/60).

Ranks 117th in both shot attempts against per 60 (64.58/60) and relatively (7.54/60).

I dont see what the last comment has to do with shot blocking, help me out? To me it implys he gets trapped in his own end with the puck. He moves the puck out of his own end extreamly well, always has. Some of the candor on this thread is nothing more than grandstanding by people who obviously are not at all familiar with the player. Please explain to me how that helps anyone?

Well for someone who moves the puck so exceptionally it's very odd that the other team has it that much while he's on the ice.

Take a breath away from the paper numbers and watch some hockey. Good signing by the Oilers.

Lol its only a one year contract and Russell is a solid player. It's not like they signed him for 8mil /8 years. I REPEAT ONLY 1 YEAR

i do not mind russell, but i feel that it gets overlooked that the reason he blocks so many shots, is because he has zero puck handling skill and can never clear his zone, leading to extra shot attempts by the other team

Can only speak to what I saw from Russell in Dallas but he was not very good at moving the puck out of the D zone. He was a "glass and out" defenseman, which hurt his team in the playoffs.

Nobody can question his heart or effort. Pointing out flaws in his game is fair, though. I still like this signing for Edmonton. Good locker room guy who will add depth on D signed for only one year.

So we sign a veteran defenseman, to a cheap 1 YEAR deal and people still find reasons to hate? I didn't see much of Russell last year but he was very good when he played for the flames. From some of the chatter here it seems like Russell just skates around looking for pucks to block. Step away from the advanced stats people! Watch a little more hockey. Great move by the oilers. He's better than Fayne/Gryba and there's absolutely no risk involved here. Worst case scenario is he adds depth to an already thin blue line.

Who cares if he's overpaid. It's for one year! He'll be gone by this time next year if it doesn't work. I think their defense is slightly improved than it was before the signing. Besides the whole 5 right handed shots and 1 left handed that's the only issue I see. I honestly think they're a playoff team if Mcdavid is healthy all season and some of their other youngsters continue to improve. They'll at least battle for the eight spot to the end and as a Devils I'm rooting for them big time. Can't wait for Larsson to at least shut up the haters, which he will.

I don't understand what's so advanced about it.

I know his advanced stats aren't great, but isn't he gonna be a third pairing guy as opposed to being a top four with the Flames?
That's what it sounds like, as I said earlier I don't even think it's a bad deal for the Oilers, but shots against over 3 seasons isn't like this complex formula.

I know how it works. I didn't realize you said it wasn't a bad deal earlier I thought you were saying it was a bad signing. My bad.

I think I'm actually higher on the Oilers than most people (especially with regards to Pouliot, Talbot, and even McDavid), just responding to the posts that are inferring his stats over the last few years are like inconsequential. The idea of a modern 'defensive' defenseman is shifting and I think it's interesting.
