Oilers are in a buyers market so that helps them.

Basically all the teams that want a starter and have playoff aspirations have already blown their wad on goaltending, so there isn't a large market for Price, MAF, and even less so for options like Reimer.

Colorado already spent one 1st on Kuemper, they're not going to spend another 1st for MAF I don't think, in their case they are more likely to maybe grab a Khudobin or Halak as an insurance policy maybe for cheap with salary retained for like a 3rd perhaps.

For Chicago if say Edmonton offers a 2nd for MAF ... you might as well take it. A 2nd in a good draft class for a retooling/rebuilding team is better than just letting a player like that walk.

I think you can do a deal for Price but it would probably be more like

Price @1.5 million retained

for

EDM 1st
Lavoie
Kassian
Koskinen

This is more reasonable, Montreal gets futures and saves money in the long run (Koskinen is off the books in 25 or so games after the trade deadline) and 1.5 mill retention is more reasonable (similar to what Toronto retained on Kessel).

You think Montreal is just going to eat $25M in real money for Lavoie and a first?

Do you think any team is giving Montreal an easy out on Price's contract . If Montreal wants to move Price it going to hurt . Remember Montreal fans in the summer posting it would cost Edmonton a 1st plus to move Koskinen with 1 year left on his deal at less then 1/2 the price . Well Price is going to cost Montreal 1st +++ maybe more at full cap to move . I like Price but I wouldn't take him at 1/2 his cap hit . He is done .

"He is done" less than a year being in the Finals? I dunno know about that. I would agree though his situation this year raises some question marks and that has to factor into the (no pun intended) price.

There are more goalies potentially/likely available:

Price, MAF, Quick, Reimer, Holtby, Khudobin, Grubauer and Dreigder probably both

Than teams interested and willing to pay a 2nd let alone a 1st for a goalie.

Edmonton is really the only playoff likely team that hasn't spent much on a goalie the last year or two.

Colorado may be in the market for an insurance goalie but after giving up a 1st for Kuemper I doubt another 1st or even 2nd is available from them for yet another goalie. If they go for a goalie, it will probably be an insurance policy for dirt cheap (like Khudobin @50% retained or Halak or something like that).

I think it's extremely unlikely that Montreal would have any interest at all in retaining 50 percent on Price. Then, on top of it you expect them to take on Koskinen's contract too? I don't see how a 1st and Lavoie are somehow worth an enormous salary retention and taking on a grossly overpaid player.

That's a pipe dream.

You do realize with 30 games left Koskinen is owed 1.65M . I think I would keep Koskinen all day every day with 30 games left over Price at 10.5 million x 4.37 years . If this was on the table and Montreal said no they would regret it . Edmonton fans on the other side would riot worst then Vancouver fans did after losing to Boston .

It's kind of surprising 15 years into the salary cap era how many hockey fans are still clueless about the concept of "expiring contracts" especially at a trade deadline.

NBA fans are way, way more knowledgeable about all the ins/outs of the salary in their sport.

Dreigder has numbers considerably worse than Koskinen this year and he has really no previous long term track record, dunno if the Oilers would be interested in him. Soucy sure.

Vanecek or Samsonov out of Washington?

I would think the overpay would have to be extraordinary. Washington's a win-now team with two goalies that are starters and combined make 2.7M this season. If one of them is getting traded it would probably be in the offseason, when they've had time to sign one to a long-term deal and the other's contract would be too much to have for a "backup".

Just to be clear... You're saying Edmonton fans would be so upset to acquire Carey Price for Koskinen that they would riot?

That's what you're saying here?

It seems there is a mixed bag on Price. Some think that he is washed up and not worth the amount offered and Habs fans still think he is a superstar and wouldn't be traded with retention for something as low as my proposal.

To Hab's fans: I feel you are not being very realistic in looking at the situation with Prices value right now. I know what is is to be attached to a player to hard and watch his value tank. Is he as good as you think he is after all of teh health and substance abuse problems, maybe, but other NHL GM's will view his contract as poison even with 50% retained. My offer was as high as I could convince myself to go given the term that is in that contract because a 36-38 year old goalie making above 5 is an anchor all of the time, so even though you ate 50% it still would suck if he drops off.

Let's be clear.
Carey Price is the greatest goalie to have never won a cup.
I take him over Lundqvist, Lugongo and Cujo every day of the week.
Heck, I'd take him over Martin Brodeaur.
He'd be the 3rd best goalie I've watched. 1st and 2nd being Roy and Hasek respectively.

Having said that.... until Price comes back and shows us that he's still committed to being the Carey Price we know and love... his value his meaningless. The idea of a team paying significant assets for him before he comes back and shows that he's still committed and capable of being a top 3 goalie in the world is downright insane.
