Why give Bouchard 10M? If it's what he wants, then that's the one Edmonton should let go. They'll find good defensemen wanting to play there for a more reasonable price.
He's an elite defence-man and absolutely lethal from the point, why wouldn't they pay him what he's worth.

The challenge will be finding a way to package Nurse + to dump him

I thought the Oilers were supposed to take less for the team? Or that only applies to the young guys and vets at the end of their career?

Fair for all involved. Have to wonder though, how hard is it going to be for the Oilers to put together a contender once both this and a future McDavid extension begin. Good problem to have I guess.

They have a wide open window this year, given ~$4.5 to 9M available at this year's deadline depending on how they manage their cap/roster this year...

Then they will have a year or two lull, just like the Pens did with Crosby and Malkin's extensions...

Then a new window (2-3 year) window reopens as the cap continues to rise, while McDrai are still fit/healthy enough for the tail end of their peak.

Then 2-3 years where we (hopefully) bask in the memories of how good they were.

Wrong.

Mcdavid is signed to the same percentage of the cap as Crosby was.

Draisaitl is now signed to nearly the exact cap percentage as Malkins extension was.

They won 2 cups after that.

Signing in 2012 was huge for that. That's like the people that got signed in 2022. Those contracts are all going to look like steals.

MacKinnon signed 2 years ago.
Your point? He signed .1 mil more than mcdavid current contract. Does every year adjust to 750k increase per contract year? Again mackinnon does have a ring. Colorado next year will see what they pay rantannen. That's where we will see how the contract ages.

Hell of a player who ended up on a deal where he made way less than he could have last time.

He rightfully deserves to be the highest player in the league (not because he's the best, but he's ~top 5 and next year McDavid will command even more).

Maybe Edmonton fans would have liked to see a bit less AAV, but it is what it is. If you guys do win a cup or more, it won't be because you have an extra 2M$ to throw at 2 fourht liners, it'll be because peak Drai and McDavid carry you to it.

The full 8 years is what drives the number up. With the crazy cap growth expected, in 4 years it should be a very good deal.

Here's to hoping the cap actually does keep rising. I'm a bit nervous about it

This happens with all great players. Pens fans have heard this about Crosby and Malkin every year.
Good point. It's just funny as I've.been hearing this for years lol

Eg. They both had 2 or 3 years left on their current deals and I'd be constantly told wait till they are gone.lol

There's no way you let a guy like him walk. But at the same time he'll be 30 when the deal kicks in. You're going to pay him top dollar through his decline. Just gotta hope they get it done and win a cup or two.
Yup, you are bang on. Just hope they get one cup now. They have done their duty for the most part.
Oh we wanted him. We just never actually thought it was a realistic possibility though. Nothing more than a nice pipe dream.
He actually would have looked great in Boston as an Oilers fan. Glad that didn't happen.

Good deal. It keeps him and McDavid there and they didn’t really have a choice but to pay him. They seem to have a bunch of players willing to sign for cheap just to bask in McDavid’s aura.

Having said that, they’d be unstoppable if they could magically find a way to move Nurse.

That's fair. I just find it interesting that fans expect the young guys who haven't made much money to give discounts but not the dudes who've already earned $60 million by the age of 28.
