Beginning of the end for the Oilers, even though I can't argue too much about this contract. Draisaitl was underpaid previously, so if he ends up being a bit overpaid then it evens out in terms of fairness.

Deal looks pricey today, in 5 years will look like a value deal.
Edmonton has a window here, if McDavid stays of course, and they'll need to start having some good young guys coming through the ranks. Their drafting and development needs to vastly improve and fast.

They have a wide open window this year, given ~$4.5 to 9M available at this year's deadline depending on how they manage their cap/roster this year...

Then they will have a year or two lull, just like the Pens did with Crosby and Malkin's extensions...

Then a new window (2-3 year) window reopens as the cap continues to rise, while McDrai are still fit/healthy enough for the tail end of their peak.

Then 2-3 years where we (hopefully) bask in the memories of how good they were.

Granted they have this season + next where it shouldn't be too great an issue. Is the bolded a given, though? They have to sign Bouchard as well have to think he is going to be around the 10M mark.

I guess they have Kane, Arvidsson, Henrique, Skinner, Ekholm, Kulak all expiring on or before the next 2 years so they should be fine in terms of re-signing core guys like Bouchard.

Congrats Oilers fans. This was a no-brainer. Extend him and figure out the future maths as you go.

To those saying this is paying for most of his decline…I’d say Drai is going to age exceptionally well. Look - the things that tend to decline sharply as a player ages…mobility/agility and 200’ even strength play…these are already things that people harp about with Drai. He’s already got an old man game. He did 2 PPG in the playoffs on one leg and zero mobility. He’s huge, strong, has a ridiculously long reach and the offensive IQ where I just don’t see a steep drop-off. He isn’t a defenseman. He already is focused on the offensive half of the ice.

He’s going to continue to be an absolute offensive monster well into the future.

10m plus contracts for players 35 will never look like value deals. They have no youth influx incoming and an aging core. They got to win in the next year or two.

That's a lot of money but Drai deserves it, he's a better player then Matthews and should be making more then him. Now how much will McDavid get in his next deal? We know it will more then $14M so the Oilers will have two players probably taking more then $30M out of the cap dayum well that's the price of having the two best player in the world I guess.

McDavid will be 16. Bouchard will also get an 8 figure contract.

And despite all the screaming from the armchair GMs on the internet the Oilers cap situation will absorb that fine enough.

What are you getting at? the increase from 14 -16 million next year because the cap is going up 4 million? That's what I thought when I read your post but it also makes no sense if that's the case. Are you suggesting a 4.3% increase in the cap next year effectively increases his asking value by 14%?
14x8=112. 16x7=112. Total value of contract is usually what agents and players are looking at.

14M Draisaitl
Bouchard will get 10-12M
McDavid 16M+
Nurse 9.5M

Lol at least $50-55M on 4 players.
The Oilers have like 7M of dead cap this year lol.

That comes off soon (most of it anyways, sans Campbell buyout)

I share your concern, but I think the cap will be 100m + in the next couple of years.

Good for Leon. Edmonton keeping one of their big guns long term is a very good sign.

hopefully trade Nurse or just trade Bouchard if he wants more than 9M per.

I'm not sure trading a defenseman who is leading the league in points is the correct move. But it definitely may have to be explored.

I just don't think they'll be able to move out Nurse. The cost to do it along with the NMC is such a tall task.
