Money & cap wise, it's a bad deal for Edmonton. Hockey wise, it's a great for Edmonton.

Locking McDavid and Draisatl long term is a no brainer.

The Oilers have like 7M of dead cap this year lol.

That comes off soon (most of it anyways, sans Campbell buyout)

I share your concern, but I think the cap will be 100m + in the next couple of years.
That’s still 50% or more of your cap tied to 4 players. 4 other D’s, 11 forwards, and 2 goalies for the other 50%.

Until the big games come, then he pretends he is injured...and doesn't contribute.
Proof that he was not pretending ? And I know @Mr Kot asked you the same thing but you always ignore him when he challenges you

That’s not how it works
For a lot of players, that's what a lot of it boils down to. Obviously money is rarely the deciding factor for these super star players. But agents negotiate in the same way.

Canucks fans should be happy the rivalry is here to stay , yet here you are trying to bring down Oilers fans on a big day,

Or are you just spitting facts and have no intention of making Oilers fans upset?
In that case my bad

Beginning of the end for the Oilers, even though I can't argue too much about this contract. Draisaitl was underpaid previously, so if he ends up being a bit overpaid then it evens out in terms of fairness.
everything ends eventually.

all dynasties end
all great teams eventually fall
Some don't even hit the conference finals let alone the Stanley cup finals

Its why you need to enjoy the present and not get mired down in the little things arguing over term/$$ amounts

It's entertainment after all. It's not our achievements that these guys are winning on the ice.

I'm not sure I'd call the Oilers either at this point.

"Best loser" is not what teams should be striving for, and I wouldn't consider teams great for it.

It's entertainment after all. It's not our achievements that these guys are winning on the ice.

Agree with this.

Sure, but the Avs won the cup when Mack was making 5.5, and haven't since his 12.6 extension.
Who was the highest paid player on a cup winner\?
In cap hit and % of the cap?
Yes he was making 6.5 and was a steal. I won't disagree with that. He became a much better player after he signed that deal.

Crosby in 08 09 his first year of his deal was 15.34% of the cap. 8.7 x 5 year deal. In its first year. (9 million is basically 15.72%)

And a quick FYI McDavids deal was 15.72% in his first year of 12.5

Lidstrom was at 15.1% in his 07 08 Red Wings win.

Malkin in 15 16 was 13.3%

Ovechkin 12.72%

Jack Eichel 12.12%

Kucherov and Vasi at 9.5 - 11.65%

These are I believe the highest % of cap players got paid to play and won a cup with.

This was my own research in 10 minutes.

14x8=112. 16x7=112. Total value of contract is usually what agents and players are looking at.

Ahh I see. But couldn't we say the same thing about any signing with a player on the same team for 8 years?

Draisitl imo signed the Mackinnon contract. Whether some want to call it a discount or not really is irrelevant in the end.

Indeed!

Now! What is the alternative? Trade away the only player(s) making a life in Edmonton appealing?

This is how it has to be. Trading/ letting Drai walk would be the mishandle of a lifetime.

Damn grats Oilers fans. Now I have a hard time imagining McDavid leaving for Toronto :sarcasm:

Glad we signed Mack before this contract but now I'm actually scared that Rantanen will be pricy. Either way in my head there's no way he asks more than Mack.

lucky for me I watch hockey to be entertained and I was entertained the last 4 seasons. Watching McD and Drai is a great luxury.

I find it funny people criticizing the contract. What do you think he would get in the open market next year? I doubt it will be less than what he just signed.

Not a discount. Not overpayment. Fair market value. Exactly where people should've expected him to land.

If I was an Oilers fan, I don't give a shit about the AAV today, just celebrate signing a top-3 forward long term. And would be relieved because surely this indicates that McDavid has every intention of staying as well.

I'm not sure trading a defenseman who is leading the league in points is the correct move. But it definitely may have to be explored.

I just don't think they'll be able to move out Nurse. The cost to do it along with the NMC is such a tall task.
Oilers should be fine as long as they dont add anyone else.
They will have ~10M to sign Bouchard next season. Afterwards they can walk away from Kane, Arvidsson and Henrique replacing them with ELC forwards and give McDavid a 3M raise. (15.5M per)

McDavid, Draisiat; ,Hyman, Nuge, Nurse, Bouchard the core for next 4 seasons for combined ~60M
