Keep having the victim complex, HF loves to trash the Oilers because they hate them not because they've been the laughing stock of the league for the past decade, not because they traded asset for Duncan Keith, not because they made Nurse one of the highest paid D in the league, not because they got swept in the first round, not because they lost a a terrible Chicago team who wouldn't have made the playoffs without Covid, not because they basically traded Barzal for Reinhart, not because they signed Koskinen to that contract...

You could write a book about the the Oiler's **** up, but nope Hf just hates the Oilers.
Why would you hate or trash the Oilers? Sounds like you need to spend your time more wisely.

I think it's the only team (Buffalo is not a team LOL) that can mess up a God level franchise player like Mcdavid.

Anywhere else he would have already win.

I’m just so glad he’s been able to break through that 50 point ceiling that was so clear to others.

So many trolls in this thread. Nurse finished in the top 10 for Norris voting. He's a legitimate #1 defenseman.

...the issue is that he did it once in an exceptionally strange shortened season and got Perennial Norris Candidate money for it on a MAX deal...we all get that they pretty much HAD to overpay him to keep him there long term, but that contract is more than just a "We believe in you" deal and so it has many critics...if Nurse has another stellar season, most of this will quiet down for a few years until the latter part of the deal, which always stings with these high-end contracts...if he doesn't and ends up closer to his career average, this deal will take even more heat, despite Edmonton really having little choice but to give it to him regardless...Holland wasn't in a good spot here to begin with; losing Larsson & having Klefbom as an unknown still just made it all the worse...

It's the timing of it I find weird. Why not just let him play out next year and see if he can repeat it? I don't think he would've gotten more than 9.25M even if he did repeat it. If he was going to walk as an UFA he wouldn't have negotiated at all.

The post I quoted didn't mention anything about money, it was only "Nurse isn't a #1", which I think at this point in time is false. For what its worth, perennial Norris candidates get Doughty and Karlsson money, not Hamilton, Werenski, Nurse money. It hurts that market value is where it is now, but it is what it is. I agree that the criticism will die out once Nurse has another season like last year...and will amplify if he doesn't.

Because then you risk him going to a team that needs a #1 defenseman. Did you see the contracts given to #1 defensemen who were UFA's this summer? Nurse would have gotten the same, or more if he repeated and waited. Giving Nurse "prove it" deals is why Holland ended up having to give him a huge payday now. He gave him bridges so he could prove it, and now he has proven it.

It's like trashing the Browns though. Plenty of teams get swept in the first round, a few teams shit the bed in the play-ins against a team that wouldn't have been there without COVID, plenty of teams have made really bad trades - worse than the Keith trade happened just this offseason.

I have no issues being objective about our flaws, but let's not pretend that people aren't invested in the Oilers saga, just like people are invested in the Leafs 1960's saga. Jones has been trending down, coming off a worse season than Nurse and got more money. The thread had 300 replies. This thread is on part two....If a team is a laughing stock for a decade, there's no real reason to spend lots of time talking about them - it's like stepping on ants. I'd figure Avs fans would understand what it's like to watch a tire fire of a team since you had one first hand with Duchene around.

I think the difference is there are a few Oilers fans that will defend any move the team makes and that turns it into a long conversation. Avs fans in general were laughing at ourselves at that point because of how bad we were. Going through that 48 point season can do things to you. You could say that were already in the acceptance phase at that point.

Also Top 10 in D (all at ES):

Shot attempts against (1st)
Unblocked shot attempts against (1st)
Shots against (1st)
Expected goals against (6th)
Goals against (6th)
On ice shooting % (4th, 500+ minutes)
Minor penalties (8th)
Misconducts (Okay he only took 1 but that puts him in a 12-way tie for 1st)

Other than on ice shooting %, those stats go hand in hand with playing a shit ton of minutes at EV and on the PK.

Well we just saw Larsson walk, if our season goes in the crapper and Nurse no longer wants to stay, we lose our #1D for nothing. Sorry, not interested in taking that chance. I'd rather this over pay than have him walk and basically close our short term cup window before it even opens.

No he didn't. Norris money is $11 million now. You didn't see the Doughty and Karlsson contracts?

Watch more D-men get deals of more than $10+ in the near future.

Looks like 8-10 million is the new 6-8.

It’s tough when the market changes but it has. I don’t see the Oilers having any choice but to do this. I think he’s a better player than he’s getting credit for here as well.

We have a toxic fanbase on hf boards and in general. People always have negative things to say about the oilers.

Good for the guy. Good player. Oilers gave him and he accepted. Deal today will look different tomorrow. All deals are promises. If players play to expectation, everything is fine! That is a risky business..... long term to a player is hoping he repond to expectation!

That's just sports fans in general. Being a sports fans is like 99% suffering and 1% good times. Only one team win every season.

I think it is more that non-Oiler fans are so used to the Oilers making awful moves that they instinctively go to "LOL, Oilers" no matter what the Oilers do. The Keith trade is a good example. Nobody was screaming about Keith sucking until the Oilers traded a mid round pick and a struggling young player who might never be a full time NHLer for him. The Oilers gave up mediocre assets for a veteran defenseman who has some warts (age, overpaid), but all in all, people are acting like the Oilers got bent over when the worst we can really say is "why didn't they get some retention on that deal?" Or the Nurse signing. We just saw what Dougie Hamilton signed for, and he had a similar caliber season to Nurse, and Hamilton threads get a "wow, that's steep", and the Nurse thread gets "LOL, Oilers". And don't tell me its because Hamilton has been this superstar defenseman for years either, he has only broken out to being a legitimate #1 you can build your defense core around in COVID shortened seasons just like Nurse did, so...yeah.

Nobody is out here defending the Ceci contract. Nobody is defending the Koskinen deal, and I don't recall anyone saying anything overly positive about it when it was signed (some, "let's see how it plays out" type comments, but no defending or celebrating). Nobody is happy that we're going into the next season with Smith and Koskinen right now.
