Idk, I would tend to agree this deal will look better with age. Nurse is still getting better.

But usually when the Oilers sign a core player its the same chorus of crap about how its a bad deal.

Confirmed Signing with Link: - [EDM] Leon Draisaitl signs extension (8 years, $8.5M AAV)

Lets see... how many of those exact arguments have been used in this thread?
  1. Product of McDavid
  2. Unproven (because poster hasn't been watching them play)
  3. Paid more than similar comparable (even though the similar comparables are not really that comparable... Ofcourse Drai makes more money than Monahan, ofcourse Nurse makes more money than Werenski...)
  4. He scores X% of his points with McDavid when he plays X% of his time with McDavid! Thats not sustainable!
  5. "Thats X players making Y dollars! You can't win like that!" (even though there are countless examples of other teams doing just that, and the Oilers problems are not their core players, its their lack of depth (which has been remedied a lot this offseason) and shite goaltending (still shite).)

Oh look, thats all of them. And the majority of the comments in both threads.
It's true...McDavid is doing exactly what elite (in the case the best) do in their sport. They make those around them better and in turn they get them more money. That's another reason why people want to play with the best. So it's true, it's probably going to be a fine contract for the Oilers, and it's also true that a lot of that is because of McDavid.

I posted this on the Oilers board as well.

Nurse was top 5 for NHL D in:

ES Goals (1st)
Goals (2nd)
ES Points (4th)
+/- (5th)
PIM (4th)
SOG (4th)
TOI/GP (4th)
TOI Total (3rd)
ES TOI (1st)
ES TOI/GP (2nd)
TOI/Shift (2nd)

Nurse was top 20 for NHL D in:

Hits (15th)
Blocked Shots (18th)
Takeaways (20th)
Major Penalties (12th)
Points (14th)

Ranking high in penalties isn’t good. It’s actually quite bad. Time on ice per shift is also not a stat to be celebrated.

Having a no.1 D is better than losing your franchise D to Seattle.
We should have traded him a couple of years ago. Flames are not in a position to compete for the cup.

But let's not kid ourselves, the Oilers are just as bad (and this is with 2 of the top 4 players in the world on the roster).

That's not really what the standings said for the last season. Not even close.

OK, but the other stats are not like minor stats?

The fact is his goals/points were probably artifically deflated too because he didn't get a lot of PP time even though the PP was just as good if not better with him on it over Barrie.

Being able to play heavy minutes is not a bad thing either.

When you play physical it isn't a bad stat. Much better than a bunch of tripping or high sticking infractions.

It shows what kind of an athlete he is, able to play long shifts and still play a ton of minutes in a game without #1PP time.

I don’t think it’s ever good to put your team shorthanded. You can play tough defence without taking penalties.

Which team is the bingo spot this year in the Pacific? :sarcasm:

28 pages of trashing Nurse and the oilers, how very HF like
Keep having the victim complex, HF loves to trash the Oilers because they hate them not because they've been the laughing stock of the league for the past decade, not because they traded asset for Duncan Keith, not because they made Nurse one of the highest paid D in the league, not because they got swept in the first round, not because they lost a a terrible Chicago team who wouldn't have made the playoffs without Covid, not because they basically traded Barzal for Reinhart, not because they signed Koskinen to that contract...

You could write a book about the the Oiler's **** up, but nope Hf just hates the Oilers.

It’s to bad this deal couldn’t get done before the Jones, Hamilton, Werenski deals. It probably would have been in the 8-8.5 range. It’s not ideal
but I’d rather slightly over pay Nurse by 750k then lose him and have to start looking for a 1D again plus it would end up pissing off Mcdavid and Draisaitl.

If Nurse's in the #1D spot currently, then they should still be looking for a 1D.

100 percent, guy is 26 and still filling out. I think in a couple years esp when cap starts to move this deal will like the draisaitl deal be a steal

Draisaitl was 21, and even when it was signed it was, at worst, an overpay relative to other young RFAs (who are notoriously underpaid in this league) but not that bad for a ~70 point first line talent.

Now consider the fact that Draisaitl isn't exactly the norm and exceptions make terrible benchmarks. I mean sure, if you expect every half-decent player to turn into a superstar after signing like Draisaitl or Mackinnon, then you can call any contract a steal.

League's. Worst. Contract.
Objectively overpaid by anywhere between 2.0m and 2.5 million per year. Or 25%-35%.

Nurse @ 6.75-7.25m over 8 years would have been a fair to great deal.

If this is the Leagues. Worst. Contract, ya boy Coleman making 4.9 for 30 points isn't far behind.
