From someone that is somewhat neutral to most teams.. please for the love of god stay healthy for these next two years. I need Oilers in the playoffs. They deserve to be there. I want to see McD and Draisaitl magic in the playoffs atleast once before the window shuts completely.

Signing is good for the next two years as others have mentioned, after that there isn't much to cheer for anyways.

It’s a fair cap hit for a very good defensive defenseman who adds nothing offensively for next year. But the term again is brutal.

The guy is 33, he could fall of a cliff at any moment.

The average age of the Oilers top 6 dmen next playoffs will be 32.

As someone who hates the Oilers, nothing wrong with this deal. Low AAV for a top 4 d-man during their Cup window, and then dumpable following it. Or, can be kept around for veteran presence with a rising cap. Solid deal.

Is he even a top 4 dman at this stage? He was playing just 16:30 minutes a night in Chicago of all teams.. and then got to Edmonton and was a complete possession anchor in both the regular season and playoffs in a bigger role.

For those saying oilers screwed up. Oilers have traded for players before only to have them walk away. The oilers do not resign these players? They use what little assets they have for players just like these at the deadline.

Both of them really helped out the PK and can help do good work shutting down. 0 issues with either signing.

The dollar amount seems fine enough - cap hit reduced from expiring deal. Term aside, ability to stay healthy seems to be the issue for Murphy.

Tkachuk the price was paid. Hughes as well especially since Wild only had Kaprisov.

Marner - yep walked and forced his way to Vegas (yea Toronto signed and got something for him in the end after a tampering threat)

Jones - oversight by Chicago for sure.

Marchand - Boston did him a favor.

Tough to add when you already have the nuclease of McDavid Draisaitl and Bouchard taking up 36.5 Million.

How many teams have won a cup the last 10 years putting out a D with an average age of almost 32?

2 years ago Ekholm was elite. Now he’s ideally a second pairing dman - if only he took better care of himself, right?.

Players are better conditioned than they ever were but ageing still happens.

Shame those team USA groupchats didn't mention OIlers as a destination.

For both deals I'm fine with next 2 years of them and I think we are in deep shit after that.

But

Next season ,

Our C's are McD, Drai, Dickinson, Samanski - that's a great C core.
Our W's include - Hyman, RNH, Podz, Savoie so not awful at all. Not as good as the C's but some talent. Hoping Howard sticks and does a similar 30 point type season. Hoping we get Kap for cheap (not 5 years x 4M with a NMC).
Our D is now better defensively but a bit weaker overall.

Nurse trade looms large! If we can trade him and get a roster piece that would be amazing. We are currently lacking IMO. Especially in net where we have zero direction.

Feels like the offseason plan should have been:

Fire Bowman, regroup and reassess.

Instead it has become:

Fire the coach (before having a new coach)
Bowman tells Katz he's bringing back the exact same team and Katz gives him an 'atta boy'
Hand out NMC's to players in their 30's
Do nothing about goaltending
Hire a coach absolutely no one wanted hired

Big yikes. Murphy looks done like Ekholm. Might be injuries and years of playing physical hockey but both look like a shadow of themselves.

Oilers really spent the saving from the Mcdavid discount and blew it on Murphy, Dickenson, Fredric.

Pretty obvious that Edmonton is in its last chance mode. The term doesn't matter because they only have 2 years to win and then start the rebuild.

If they don't move Nurse, they are going to be in some real trouble. $8mil in cap space gone in two days to non-impact players.

I look at it different. $8M for two guys who play the game without destroying any chance to win. Not flashy, but good hockey player who can be trusted to contribute in a lot of small ways that's not measured on the score sheet.

EDM needs more guys like that, not less.

Marchand the plug is at least 75x the player Murphy/Dickinson/Frederic are.

This is what Edmonton is selling McDavid for a long term extension.

At least Murphy makes sense at the salary but the term is wild.

I don't get it either, they traded for them and then extended them. I can't remember much of Dickinson playing but Murphy played hard for them.
