It's interesting how EDM's bottom 6 is suddenly so much better and contributing since JP was traded and how the Canes are now struggling with him in the line up. Shocking. /s

The same result as with Justin Schultz, Nail Yakupov, Turris, though Jesse wasnt a bad minus player. And a lot of other bottom 6 players Oilers has had recent years.

The other heavy minus players, and things started to sort themselfs out when they leaved. .... they created their own problems on ice.

Puljujarvi is getting his minutes. His TOI is right up there with all of the established players on the Canes. 2:00 on the PP too. I’ve watched a couple periods of the last three games. It’s clear that he is trying hard. I think he’s just too dumb for the NHL.
Thats really interesting.
I wasnt aware that Jarmo did that. Maybe he was trying to determine Jesses work ethic around non hockey aspects...like maybe he was wondering about the language issue. Just grasping at straws with that but it would be interesting to hear his reasoning.
Few years back some posters from Finland chimed in on this topic (claiming insider knowledge of JP’s school years). Let’s just say their posts didn’t shine a very positive light on his years in school.

Obviously you don’t need to be an academic to succeed at hockey. But if you can’t think where to go on the ice or what to do when the puck comes to you, it’s going to be a struggle.

True. There were some very negative posts from Finns to the point it just seemed like irrational hatred.

Worst part is it looks like they were right because they pointed out his specific flaws pretty much the day he was drafted. Think that ijuka fella was one, I remember his posts being pretty mean lol.

The NHL game is a hard enough adjustment for most players. I cant imagine how hard it would be if you couldnt communicate effectively.

I posted this back in Jesses 2nd or 3rd year with the team when he was still struggling mightily to communicate in English.
I just didnt understand why a player, who is about to make the most important career decision in his life, doesnt realize that learning the language should be an absolute priority. Not only that...how is it that seemingly none of Jesses advisors (agents..etc) communicated that to him.
I cant imagine
that nobody said anything to him (including Oilers Management) so I think the onus is on the player and IMO Jesse really undermined his chance at NHL career by dropping that ball.
Nothing to imagine. Truth is he just didn't give a flying f***, or grasp the importance for his case,, a testament to his overall awareness imo

Not only did TM and Chia state in several interviews it was a problem, our media asked him every time he returned back. He also eluded he f'ed to that when Holland got him back. Yet to this day you have ppl arguing to the contrary like the organization failed him lmao, yet we have testimonies from players like Bouchard and Maroon who confirm and praise the Oilers org checked in on their summer "homework assignments" regularly

More than a few ppl stated it was the Oilers duty to employ a full time tutor to fly over to Finland, pay labor, accomodations and incidentals, to have JP not spend his own contract $

Yeah that was a real eye roller. I’ve lived in several countries where the language was new to me. Needless to say I wasn’t making NHL money either, but the onus was on me to be able to fit in and do my job so I paid for lessons to get myself up to a decent standard. It’s only normal.

Yeah it was a clear mistake by him, but sometimes people tend to make mistakes as younger teenagers. Especially the year before coming to NA was extremely busy here in Finland with the summer games, Champions Hockey League, CHL playoffs, regular FEL season, FEL playoffs, WJC-18, WJC-20 and other junior national team games. Altogether that was about 100 games or a bit more. That's a lot for a teenager who's also known to train hard.

His coach was demanding and he was in a big media stir here in Finland so I guess as a young guy he had his thoughts elsewhere or something. Yes he naturally could've worked harder earlier, but he probably should've spent a year more in Finland and practised English during it if you go that way.

Looks like Canes fans aren't too happy about JP at the moment. Lots of stone hands, no brains and the like comments lol

Don't hate the kid but he's just not a good player. It's amazing how he attracted such a large fanbase.

Puljujarvi was just nice, happy person. Almost like a dog vibes.

He had good stretches which allowed him to get a fan base.

I still like him at a lower cap hit (1M)

The problem is how toxic so many of them are. I mean, FFS, the narrative got to the point it was somehow McDavid's "fault" he was no good.

Not really.
Alot of people bought into the sliderule kids who were saying the fancies showed/proved he was a good player.
Which of course ignored anything that a person with a brain, a pair of eyes and virtually any hockey experience, playing or watching, could see was complete and utter bs.
The unfortunate thing was that he seems like a good kid. But theslide rule kids wanted him so badly to prove they were right that they made him an object of derision. Cause he wasnt good.Which again, was so predictable if you ever actually watched him play.
But fear not. The sliderule kids will not give up. They will be blaming his ultimate lack of success on everyone else.. But on the kid.
Who is just not good enough.
