What a great way to start the playoffs, Bruins looked like a totally different team than the one we saw the last part of the regular season. The Bruins need to keep the intensity going through every shift, every period and every game, don't give them anything. As for the goalies, I would go with Swayman again for game 2 and even if he gets a shutout, I would put Ullmark in for game 3.

Now that was a fun game to be at!

I expect the Leafs will come out with a lot more determination in game #2 ....that said, if the Bs continue to play like they did last night I will take a deep breath and say round two becomes highly possible. When Pasta, Marchand , Coyle and Zacha don't score and you still put up five the tea leaves are all looking good

And a shout out to Johnny Beecher.....after being a yo-yo between Boston and Providence all year he really came to play

Great to see Pasta clean-shaven for the start of the playoffs. Says he’s here for the long haul and the team needs to stick around at least long enough for him to earn and grow a new beard. Few other guys looked the same. Good little message.

Beecher was excellent. From the early goal to the desperation puck clear in the last minute or so, he was engaged and active all game. Great introduction to the playoffs. This type of hockey should really suit him.

On goalies I’d rotate to Ullmark for G2, simply because it works and they’ve both fully earned net time. But if they stay with Sway I’d get it, he was brilliant. Don’t think he stole the game but he never gave the Leafs a sniff of getting into it. Bottom line is I don’t think it matters – two excellent goaltenders who will give you every chance, and when/if the Bruins do find themselves losing a game, the odds on it being due to the netminding are miniscule.

Steve Dangle in his series preview made the good point that coaching is going to be a key factor in this series. And as Steve himself knows, unless Monty has another panic attack there is next to zero chance that he gets out-coached by Keefe. He’s the better tactician, he’s dialled in, is the man in charge in a way he perhaps wasn’t last year. Should continue to be an important advantage for us, especially when the Bs have last change.

That was not a playoff effort from Toronto. Had some decent patches, but the required intensity and commitment just weren’t there. If you go back to 2019, the Bruins weren’t ready in G1 of that first round, but they raised their game pretty quickly. This Leafs team at least in theory is capable of being a lot better both in terms of execution and compete level. Who knows what they’ll bring, but Boston needs to be ready for a response in G2.

I think Monty has the D pairs right for the Leafs. Lindholm-McAvoy make a great pairing but you spread the talent better if you can split them up. Hampus with Carlo gives that pair more mobility, while Gryz has always complemented Charlie well and there’s not much need to worry about Gryz getting hemmed in by the opponent’s top forwards because Toronto don’t play a heavy enough game for it to become an issue. Peeke-Shatty is perhaps a little bit of an odd and comparatively unknown combo, but you can shelter them from Matthews et al. and the Leafs’ bottom 6 is not a major threat. Shattenkirk can be a little bit of an adventure but his offensive skills are handy when he’s on song, so you can wear that, at least to a point. If it becomes a problem then Wotherspoon presents as a fine alternative.
Seemed like most of the Bs shaved for this one.

Pasta was a target all night but IMO played well.

I thought Marchy was really targeted.

Obviously at the start of the game with Domi. But the rest of the leafs were hitting him any chance they got as well.

Toronto Maple Leafs HC Sheldon Keefe was not impressed with Max Domi's careless penalty that accounted for the 5-1 loss to the Boston Bruins in Game 1 of the playoffs on Saturday.

In the matchup, with less than four minutes remaining in the second period, Max Domi slashed Boston's Brad Marchand on the arm just below the glove during a faceoff. The action resulted in Domi receiving a 2-minute minor penalty for slashing Marchand.

"Careless penalties. Domi's penalty is the one that I would call an undisciplined penalty. I understand what he is trying to do, but he crossed the line there, and you can't do that. The high-sticks and stuff like that - that is just careless stuff. I don't know if it has anything to do with the emotion."

The Leafs stickwork was their undoing. Lots of slashes, cross-checks, high sticks. Hope Mac is ok.

Domi should at least get a fine for the two punches in the back of the head.

As Dan said, thought Monty would go with JVR instead of Beecher. Pleasantly surprized . . .a great call. Beecher is here to stay.

We just held serve. When Leafs are confident they are dangerous. Bottle them up. Not sold on Shatty on his off side. Pasta's forechecking yup!!! Don't see 69 doing that.

If a Bruin tried to injure Mathews like Domi tried to injure Marchand with a chop to the wrist not once but twice, the league would be investing it and likely suspending a Bruin. That was a blatant attempt to injure a player, knowing he has no protection in that area. What's better yet when Freddie lines up with Domi, the ref interjects and warns him not to do anything to Domi. That is brutal.

And yet he was on the ice immediately after the goal was scored?

Yes, the Bruins can play a bit tighter. BUT…..

4 GF (not counting ENG)
Played a physical, chippy, but disciplined game.
1 GA
and ping…. ping….. ping…

Could easily been a 6-1 win. Bull gang needs to check the posts on those goals and see if the dents can be pulled out.

Toronto can and will (I expect) play better, but that was a dominant effort by our B’s.
