Loving the new NHLX setup - I'll probably release v1.3 with this new NHL configuration this weekend.
- You'll have two new high-level Cup competitions to play - the NHL Canadian Championship and the NHL American Championship. I highly recommend turning them on if you play the NHL, but you don't have to.
- The NHL regular season is now a 70 game slate. Balanced schedule (home and home versus every team). Conferences and divisions are gone. Standings are a single list. Top 20 make the playoffs but seeds 13-20 play a "play-in" round. So you really want to get into the top 12 to guarantee a spot in the "real" playoffs. The 4 winners of the play-in series join the top 12 seeds to make-up the 16 team playoff field.
- The American Championship features all 28 USA clubs, with a regional 4-group initial round of home-and-home. The winner of each region advances to the playoffs.
- The Canadian Championship has a single group stage of all 8 Canadian clubs playing home-and-home against each opponent. The top four in the group advance to the Cup stage and compete for the chapmionship.
- I gotta say I just love having an extra high-level competition to play for as an NHL GM. In this sim, the Blackhawks finished 18th in the NHL standings but were extra feisty in the American Championship, winning the Central (beating the NHL Stanley Cup Champion Avs among others) while making it to the semi's in the competition. In Canada, the Leafs once again fell short of making it to the Stanley Cup but won the Canadian Championship - so it helps ease the pain of another playoff failure. Lots of fun new scenarios to play out.
- Also full-awards both individual and team for each of the new comps, which gives NHL players more chances to fill their history with cool new achievements.
Right now the Cups are named for respective legends for each country with long resumes of winning trophies and longevity - who also don't already have NHL awards named after them:
- The Chris Chelios Cup for the American Championship
- The Jean Béliveau Cup for the Canadian Championship
Although I am open to ideas for the naming of the Cups!
