Friedman: Dylan Larkin requests trade

I have no issues with larkin leaving. He needs to be in a 1a/1b center situation. But Yzerman needs to go right behind him. "You needed some offensive help over the past two deadlines? Here's Craig Smith and David Perron." Gtfoh.

Has to be Minnesota
They’re gonna have to get a 3rd team involved. Just not sure they have the assets to make another big move for a player in their prime.

Anaheim is likely the front runner. Chicago is poised to make a big move like this and has the assets. Montreal is another one who’s probably already called. He’s the perfect fit to go in there as the 2C. It takes so much pressure off Suzuki. They’re not getting him without Hage though, and he’ll only be one piece.

With the Debrincat contract coming up, he’s more than likely gone too. Seattle would probably be the frontrunner.

Detroit just became the team of the draft without a 1st round pick. They can turn Larkin and Debrincat into some nice young assets, to go with what they already have, and have coming, as well as a Top 5 likely pick next year now.

This is where the pressure is now firmly on Yzerman. This probably buys them 2 more years. One will be a real bad year, but they’ll start playing the kids and see what they got.

You are prob talking misa + 2nd overall to start conversation and go from there
Listening.

This is not meant to be a knock on Misa, he showed great strides across his 18yo rookie season, had some top flight moments later in the year and started settling in with the best in the world. His future is very bright. Who 2OA is apparently a crapshoot, but should be reasonably solid at the very least.

We can mix in value for Larkin to run the #2 line and be a veteran, hopefully a happy one.

Celebrini and Seider at the core though… that team’s gonna go somewhere. Kinda have to lean into a yes please. I would far more rather net a Seider than a Matthews if I’m swinging for the fences and have assets like 2OA and Misa for a conversion.

Taking bets on the number of pages before someone posts a link where this is refuted and then another bet on how many pages this thread goes on for like it was never refuted.

I'm guessing 3 pages before finding out it's not true and 15 pages of trade proposals and shitting on him for asking for a trade after that.
Should be any minute now

This is the sort of rationale that would have led to the Jackets trading away Werenski about five years ago when Jones and PLD left.

There is no reasonable circumstance that leads to Detroit trading away Seider right now, period, no matter what. He's what you hope to get with those sorts of picks and frequently don't get. He is not so old as to be outside of their potential competitive window even if they do have to reset after this. He's a keeper. Trying to insist on him being movable is just adding insult to injury. You can talk about some of the older guys, like, say, DeBrincat (and I think some Wings fans are in fact contemplating that), but by any possible rational measure Seider should be an absolute untouchable, and it's a vulture's attitude to attempt to insist otherwise.

(which is annoying, because I would gleefully murder to get him in union blue, but, alas.)
When a team signals rebuild coming (the captain bailing counts) - the vultures with near term hopes and Cup contenders absolutely come knocking. Thats how the rebuild game works.

I’ve bled Teal since 1991. Been through all those years with Marleau and Thornton, remaining loyal to them as very very good players. In the end, for almost two decades they were competitive and a threat for conference Championships, but Pittsburgh buzzsawed them the one time the got into the final. Two decades of hope.

Don’t think of this so much as being vultured. Get your haul of assets and build for the future. Take it as a compliment that I’m making a bigger deal of Seider when Larkin says “bail!!!”. Larkin has put Seider in a crappy spot, the whole team in a tough spot. But reality is, he knows he’s not going to win a Cup in Detroit. But Det can say, OK, Seider can help another team now, which won’t be winning years anyways, and give us a shot at being a monster in 4-5 years. The assets SJ can offer will be young and top level. The salary cap will be higher then and $ to resign those guys available. With the cap going up, trades will likely be fewer as most teams can hold onto more guys. The oven of Seider is hot, grabbing that cash for 2031 isnt the worst strategy. But yes, it will hurt and be weird to see him Chase the cup in another jersey.

I'm an old bastard, I remember that (Messier was always a jackass) and much more. But while owners are a terrible breed of monopolistic extractive dirtball, the modern wealth of players has made (some/most of) them just as unrepentantly cutthroat and selfish. And it seems to be particularly bad with (but by no means limited to) the American stars. It's good to be principled and have a strong sense of self and a desire to win, but it seems far more like they consider contracts to be meaningless. They accept the long-term generational wealth but none of the responsibilities/trade-offs.
How does that have anything to do with American players? You’re still that bitter about the Olympics? The whiniest players in the league are all Canadian buddy.

Crackpot theory. What if the Devils use this as an opportunity to secure their position to get Quinn Hughes?

It's literally no secret that Quinn wants to play with Larkin. Minny will try hard to acquire him as well. But the Devils could get him very easily if they decide to move on from Hischier.

Does trading Hischier and Markstrom for Larkin and Trey Augustine make Bill Guerin's July 1st a living nightmare?

Obviously Hischier has more value than Larkin 1 for 1. The Devils would want to use it as an excuse to shed cap for the inevitable, and the Red Wings have so much goalie talent that would make the Devils less of a dumpster fire.

Not that I think this would happen... This situation is just fascinating.
July 1st doesn't have to be a nightmare when he can sign him on July 2nd.

Nope, we lost the Olympics, that's life. And there are indeed many whiny Canadian players. But there's a definite pattern with Hughes, Matthews, Larkin, Hellebuyck, Miller, Eichel, both Tkachuks, etc

The problem: they don't want to spend their careers on perpetually mediocre or bad teams, especially in Canadian or Canadian border markets.

Doesn't really seem like a real problem to me. Seems understandable.
