He needs to go back to Lethbridge for the upcoming season, no question. We need not make the same mistakes the previous regime did. He can dominate, get more weight on that body (say 15 pounds of muscle and come into camp next year off a Memorial Cup run).

Nine game him. Seems like a win-win. And if he ends up lighting in up on Eichel's wing, then having to make a tough decision is a good problem to have.

You mean the current regime. See Middlestadt, Casey and Thompson, Tage.

That's the likely scenario and shy of an eye-popping camp, should be how they proceed.

The likeliest place is Lethbridge next season, but it would be a bigger mistake at this point to take a strong position as to where he belongs when the Sabres haven't even had a look at him in dev camp. There are many milestones between now and the start of the regular season. Let things unfold.

It was mentioned during the draft coverage that compete level is a definite skill. Compete level is not just on the ice, but also off the ice in terms of training and preparation. We've witnessed the lack of compete with some of our picks. Cozens wants to get better. He appears to be a good teammate with high character. He comes from a good family. Based on his size, skill, compete and character we've got ourselves a good one.

I’m excited the more I read about how good his skating is. One of the best in the draft coupled with his size is a nice thing. I wanted Zegras but am onboard

Character and work ethic are a huge deal. They're just attributes that are very, very difficult to assess as fans who don't have personal access to these players. Cozens seems like a humble, competitive, and hard-working kid. Hopefully he really is.

It's definitely one nice thing to have a kid who CAN play nine games and then go back to juniors. It's been a while since we've had someone who we can even speculate on doing that, unless you count Pu I guess.

Cozens could hang with the Sabres then join Canada for the WJC. He'll have to really impress in pre-season for Botterill to do it.

The 9 game limit is for ELC slide, 40 game limit is for accrued seasons for UFA status.

See Reinhart, Sam.

Of course, they botched the Nylander situation IMO, though one could make the case he needed to learn the professional game primarily over fine tuning his skills (he had the skating, shooting, and passing down at the Junior level) and the AHL afforded him that opportunity better.

Why is everyone already penciling him in as a winger? You do realize these scouting articles are wrong most of the time about projections.

Cozens should 150% be in the WHL next year. No more dumb rushing.
No not 150%. If he comes into camp and is one of the best 23 players there then he should be on the team. I don’t care if you’re 18 or 38. Take the best 23 players out of camp. If he seems overwhelmed come regular season the option for him to go to Lethbridge is always there.

I mentioned it in another thread. I’d like to see him get the 9 game try out. Send him down around WJC time and then finish the year in the W.

Reinhart went back to junior after a 9 game stint to work on his strength, but I think just as importantly, tailor his game to a more pro-level play style at the expense of higher point totals if necessary. I think that's perfectly in line with what Cozens should be doing.

No

Being better than Sobotka, Wilson and Girgensons does NOT mean you should be in the NHL

Well, if we’re cherry-picking whipping boys, what if he’s equal to Sheary? Or Okposo? This team needs help, and while I hope Cozens returns to the WHL, if he shows that he’s a middle 6 forward in September, then I think he needs to be given a shot.

The important thing is that we get his development right. Even if he's one of the top 12 forwards at camp (which is not unlikely), you've gotta send him down if that's what will help him become the best player he can in the long run.

Being better than shitty NHLers is not a good reason to put a teenager’s development at risk.... Cozen’s NHL readiness is unrelated to the NHL roster

I've felt like the old man yelling from the porch about the same thing the last few years. In the past, Buffalo was bringing guys up just because they were better than the crap at the bottom of the roster. That shouldn't be the measuring stick for when to bring/keep a player up on the big club. The measuring stick needs to be, "is this player ready to be a competitive NHLer".
