LeBrun: Dubois wants out of Winnipeg, will not sign a contract for next season

I'm not sure where this "Jets have the upper hand" comes from.

Dubois can sign an OS for 4.2 and that will screw the Jets.

Then he walks next year into a 9x7 year to any team he likes.

OR the Jets settle for a trade that is better then a 2nd.

You really can't control a player who wants out because they have options. Best to accommodate.

Yep, Dubois is going to cut the nose off his face and throw away over $4M in salary for next season, risk long-term security, and risk having Winnipeg match, to accommodate some cheap arsed team not willing to pitch an appropriate deal.

Get real, dude.

PS: Habs don’t even have a second round pick. What are you going to suggest next? That Habs offer sheet him to a $2.1M contract?

It doesn't have to be the Habs for an OS

it screws the jets and himself! seems very likely that this would be a route that he would take :eyeroll:

Since when?
for montreal to offer sheet pld at second round value they would need their 2024 second round pick

I'm sure PLD is chomping at the bit to take a pay cut, risk a career ending injury, and play a full season in Winnipeg if the Jets match

Not to mention he'd still have to be a Jet on July 1st for that to happen, which he most certainly won't be

I'm very curious to see who's going to gain the upper ground in this fight.

There are lots of variables here.

-How much does PLD actually want to be in Montreal vs other places? Is he just using the Habs to get his value up elsewhere as many players do?

-How much does Dubois want to sign for here vs. other places if he does want to come here?

-Brisson's interest in getting the richest contract for his client.

-What Hughes or other GMs are willing to spend.

-Whether what Chevy wants is realistic given you're buying 1 year of RFA on a player that's... I won't say damaged goods, but a little suspicious in terms of his history.

Lots of fun Game of Thronesy variables. We don't know any of this stuff, so it should be an interesting 2 weeks.

Yes, I've read the thread. In fact, the title of the thread says he will not sign a contract for next season. So that clearly indicates that he will sit until he is traded. He won't play another game for the Jets. Do you think he'll cave and sign with them for next season?
The consensus is he has given the Jets 5-6 teams he’d sign an extension with. A sign and trade. Dubois doesn’t want to sit out and the Jets want an asset back. Something will surely be done before or at the draft.

I agree if the Jets can get a deal they like. But if they are getting lowball offers then what do they do?

Thinking out of the box:

Pegs have said they want "now" pieces. What about Matheson for Dubois straight up ?

Matheson is a former 23rd overall, coming into his own with 2 x 30 points seasons.
Very smooth and mobile new era defensemen.
Signed for 3 more years under 5M$ AAV.

Everyone is trying to push for Harris since MTL has depth in LHD, but what is what Matheson that finally gets it done ? We could do with Ghule, Harris, Xhekaj & Hutson...

Never seen it proposed/discussed before...
HA HA HA HA.

Never been discussed before because it is an embarrassingly bad proposal. Habs fans will be blocking you it is so bad.

Surprise twist: Dubois sufficiently jacks up his value with his hijinks and the Jets finally offer Dubois the contract that he always wanted with Winnipeg but Chevy was being tight with the dollars.

HEEL TURN.

As a Hab fan who doesn't want PLD unless the cost is something you can't say no to. I think if LA was offering Vilardi or Byfield the deal would be done already.

LA can just wait this out because they know Montreal is only a factor till draft day. After that there is no way they offer the '24 1st even if it is protected. Montreal has no '24 2nd round pick, so the best they can offer would be the Colorado 2nd which would not be enough, so they would be out of the running

So it comes down to which teams of the supposed 5-6 that he is interested in extending with are also interested in him extended. There may be others willing to make an offer as a rental, and then it will probably be for less of a return. So LA if they wind up the only suitor for him essentially are bidding against themselves, unless Winnipeg are willing to hang on to him till the TDL and see if there will be more players in the game when teams see where they are at and what their needs are. They can also retain salary to a rental team to open it to more bidders.

To be honest the longer it goes the more likely PLD signs his QO and hits the open market and the Habs give up nothing to sign him for free. Other teams are competing for Dubois' focus; the Habs already have it.

Until I see pen to paper, all that is just fan and media talk. The only certainly is if he hits UFA, Montreal is just one of the teams that can try to sign him for free

Saw this in the trade forums…

Now, why would Montreal try to move up to #2? Presumably, it is to get a center.

Makes you think that perhaps Montreal is out of the Dubois derby. I wonder what Montreal would give up to move to #2? Dvorak, Kidney and a second rounder? Or is it Dach?

Winnipeg could use team-elected arbitration to block that.

Dubois presumably wants to make more than 6m next year, and do it somewhere other than Winnipeg, so he has good reasons to not be eager to pull that trigger.

Swayman? He's a product of the best team in the league.... He's far below on that list.

I'm not going to change the mind of someone who thinks that. But, I will just throw out there that his career save percentage is .920 and his save percentage this year was .920... and I would strongly argue that Cassidy's system was way nicer on goalies than Montgomery's.
