LeBrun: Dubois wants out of Winnipeg, will not sign a contract for next season

It really does suck for Winnipeg to have this whole "Montreal thing" hanging over he entire situation like Damocles Sword.

Basically makes it impossible to get full value for the guy. Montreal don't have much reason to pony up a full value package to trade for him when they can anticipate they may well get him "for free" very soon.

Can't really get other buyers interested when the guy has already established a history of bolting or forcing his way out when he doesn't like the situation, and have that expectation that he's effectively a "rental" headed for Montreal at his earliest convenience.

Just a real cruddy situation to put the Jets in. On the other hand...if you're Montreal, you've gotta be loving it. If he's actually just setting up to become a Canadien, and telegraphing all the signs to make sure the Habs can keep all of their valuable pieces to surround him with when he arrives.

It could all blow up pretty badly though, if the eventual negotiations with Montreal don't go super well. I think if you're the Habs...you have to be careful how you handle that. You're not supposed to look a gift horse in the mouth...but i think in this case, you really have to think long and hard about whether this is a guy you're going to want to commit to as part of your core. There's no "undo" button on contracts, and if he decides at some point that he doesn't like Montreal so much after all...good luck finding a sucker to take that on after he's forced his way out of everywhere, including the team he was allegedly trying to ultimately get himself to.
If you are PLD, why would you want to play only for Mtl exactly? Arent you shooting yourself in the skate because you then dont »force » Mtl to give you the best contract offer.

I am sure he would not put Mtl on no-trade list if any but cmon there are better options for him than Mtl for the next 5 years…

who knows something i dont know? Why only Mtl?

what really sucks is that people ignore that he may be interested in signing long term with 5-6 teams and come here and say it's montreal or bust

He may be. He may not be.

If you're the team that's lining up to be his 5th team in 8 years and you've still got all those Montreal rumors swirling...how confident are you going to to be, giving up a huge package and investing in Dubois as part of your expected long-term core to build around? If you're one of those "maybe" teams.

Even if you do get him signed as one of those "maybe" teams...how confident are you that he's not going to change his mind and want out a year or two into the deal if he doesn't like how things are going, or doesn't like the coach, or really just wants to play in Montreal?

We've seen before that forcing your way to a specific team, or very small set of specific teams really doesn't seem to undermine free agent leverage much at all.

Tavares didn't get hurt in the wallet by his desire to play for Pyjama town. Trouba picked his spot with New York and got the entirety of what most people expected and then some. Tkachuk had a pretty small, select list of places he wanted to go and he still got a plenty healthy contract.

On and on. It just doesn't seem to negatively effect the bargaining power of top players the way people act like it should. The reality is, there's a serious scarcity on the services of these top players...and if a team decides to "play hardball" they're still plenty able to walk it back and ply their trade elsewhere.

Are you saying that the fact that it's a 1st matters? The difference between 31OA and 33OA is negligible and the fact that one of them is technically a 1st round pick doesn't change that fact.

But you see Sonny back in 1967 it was a 6th round pick so you should think it's even more valuable now. :wally:

Name a few…I could not.

Who knows. But literally all of them could give us a better pick than the one being offered.

I think we could probably just deal him as a rental and get a better 1st round pick.

I offered a late first with two NHL bound prospects, one of which will most likely be a 2nd line player.

Nah man, you ain't getting Bedard, if you're waiting for him

Habs fans understand that as a 1 yr rental Dubois easily gets a 1st and prospect so the fact he's likely coming with an extension means he's gonna get that and more. Some are obviously just trolling. It's old and how many times can you troll but it's what some have to be doing

Anyways tho, Habs fans, rumored pld wants close to 9 million per...

How do you think that effects the captain Suzuki and heart of the team Caufield who both signed similar deals to each other and IMO are better than Dubois. Suzuki definitely is better overall, more complete and Caufield is a stud too. Is Dubois the 60 point 2 center who played lots with ppg Kyle Connor worth more?

truth is, you don't know who the other teams are and what they are offering lol

Truth is, you don't even know if it's even true that there's other teams lol

But I think the offer I suggested is one of the better that was offered by other member of this site, even if it doesn't please you

I like how the only points of value is Bedard and the crap Habs fans want to give us. There is no inbetween.

As I stated I would of taken that offer, but I wouldn't too hung up of PLD wanting 9 mil, all players want more then they get but he will absolutely get 8+ on a 8 year deal, anyone thinking he won't is dreaming.

I'd do 8x8, but 9x8 is rich IMO

I like how you expect to get a better deal from another rebuilding team, like, it make sense for them point of view at getting older, right?

Montréal is on the cusp of getting out of their rebuild, and that's why we can afford to trade thoses pieces

With the Hellebuyck news, I'm reposting what I offered earlier

Dvorak (Ok center, a tad expensive contract, 2 years left. Ideally a 3rd center)

Hoffman (straight up cap dump, contract end at the end of the year. Could maybe be flipped at the tdl? Powerplay specialist, but dogshit on defense)

One of: Beck or Roy - both of them are solid prospects. Beck is a two ways center, in the mold of Phillip Danault IMO. Roy is excellent on offense, good on defense, à la Toffoli. IMO, Roy is the better prospect (he's a winger), but Beck plays center. Aside of Slaf and Hutson, those are probably our best prospects (with Mailloux)

One of: Barron or Harris - both of them have untapped potential, and both of them will play in the NHL for sure. I think that Barron has more tools, but Harris has more hockey IQ

Florida 1st 2023

For

PLD
Alright, I looked at this a bit closer given that the Jets are now likely shopping Hellebuyck. I am also expecting Scheifele and Wheeler to not be with us too so absorbing your dump and Dvorak should be fine.

I think I would swap out the Florida 1st with the Calgary 1st to make this more competitive, or if you don’t want to do that, I would sub out Barron/Harris and gamble on Hutson.

Your proposal could be viable.

I mean literally any other 1st round pick that could be offered for him is better which is the meat and potatos of the offer and really the only thing we would care about.
