Jets want players to win now is the rumor, Byfield isn't that player, Vilardi is.
It's important to push that narrative. In reality you take the higher value, which at this point is Byfield. If the Jets have the option.

1st+Barron would also mean that Dubois has similar value to Lehkonen.
Except it’s not really the same thing is it? First off Montréal got a 2nd in that deal, not a 1st . (And it was expected to be a very late 2nd). And Barron was still largely an unknown at the time. He had 2 NHL games under his belt. He’s now established that he’s already a reliable top 4 defender with considerable upside at age 21.

Finally. Lehkonen was a pending RFA but he hadn’t outright refused to play another game for Montreal (unlike Dubois and the Jets).

So it may appear similar on the surface. But even a casual look at the facts refutes that notion

Barron wasn't an unknown, I thought the Habs made out very well in getting Barron. I wanted to trade Copp for him straight up at the time.
In my defense that is why I edited it to "similar", I remembered it being a 1st, but I was wrong. Still the difference between Lehkonen and Dubois isn't a 1st to a 2nd.

He was a regarded prospect. But he’s far more established now. Comparing his value at the time of the trade to now isn’t valid. He’s proven he can play in the league and that he has a high ceiling. At the time of the trade all there was speculation on his potential

I don’t think Barron is an untouchable but he would certainly be hard to part with since Montreal doesn’t have anything on the right side except for Barron right now with Mailloux coming up at some point.

Mailloux and Beck are definitely on the table. Tons of Habs fans have made offer including Beck not because he’s not a good prospect but because we wouldn’t have any room for him with Suzuki, Dach and PLD at center. I think Hughes would be more willing to do Mailloux instead of Barron - Not because of what happened in his draft year but because Barron is already contributing and I bet they think they can at least compete for a playoff spot next year (kinda like where Ottawa was in 2022-2023).

As I said, Barron would be hard pill to swallow and would force Hughes to draft Reinbacher at 5. Not an impossible trade but would rather give another asset instead.
If i had to choose i'd rather keep Mailloux over Barron.

I don't think Mailloux is a TNSE kind of player. I would be very surprised if they had any interest in him.

You do realize the Habs just signed Nick Suzuki to an 8 year contract til age 31 and has a lower career high? He is a cap dump waiting to happen, too?
Last time I checked, Suzuki has a career high of 66 and Dubois 63. You can pretend pace means something, then you have to calculate Dubois’s pace the second half of the year in which he wouldn’t have hit 70 points with the way he was playing. Not to mention Suzuki is a leader and two way center which Dubois is the opposite. Keep up the bad sales pitch. I don’t think anyone that matters is falling for it.

Aren’t they unloading assets? How is win now their focus ?
Jets focus is squeeze in to playoffs and keep arena full enough to make a profit. Then repeat until fans finally have enough. Ten years now and we're still going strong.

I’ve suggested Anderson and 31 for Dubois.

Funny how Anderson was a highly coveted asset at the TDL but yet now he’s cat vomit despite the Jets apparently wanting to win now. Anderson can bring a lot of what Dubois does.

he's that young powerforward that is very consistent and has a career high that way more then 47 points right?
Congrats on discovering hockeydb

We know he has a NTC and that just about makes any player a non starter in trade talks. There are exceptions but it's hard to count on anyone waiving to come here.
That could be an X factor. But he’s certainly a coveted asset, there was a lot of interest in him last TDL for what you’d assume would at the least be a 1st round pick. Guys his size who can skate, can hit and fight, and pot you 20 plus a year don’t exactly grow on trees.

Of course he is arguably worth a late 1st. If not for his contract which definitely scared teams off. No one traded for him after all...

I agree he would replace some of what Dubois brought. But that's a steep price to pay for what he brings.

Habs said he wasn’t available apparently for what it’s worth.

1 - did not realize Suzuki outscored PLD this season. I did not refer to pace.
2 - Both players have their advantages...but are pretty close in value IMO which is my point. To suggest signing Dubois to 8 years is horrible but Suzuki 's 8 years is an amazing contract is laughable.
3 - There are more than enough bad sales pitches going both ways.
4 - As if either of our opinions mean anything to anyone that matters.

You’ve been chiming in a lot so I find it odd that you don’t know even know the career high statistics of the players you’re talking about. I think there’s a lot of that going on in this thread when it comes to talking about players who people have no education on and for whatever reason, you’re a “Montreal fan” gets brought up as an argument point to belittle a fanbases opinion. And I agree there’s a lot of bad sales pitches. That’s because Montreal and Winnipeg don’t make good trade partners but the team with their back against a wall with a player forcing his way out has brought Montreal into the picture with his comments. Habs fans aren’t in a hurry to start giving away assets acquired the past two years to rush and get somebody like PLD.
