This is not surprising in the least, and he is more a figure head in the position than having the authority of most GMs in the league.

Shanny is really calling all the shots in the Shann-a-Plan and Dubas simple his right hand man sitting in the GM chair and doing the day to day stuff.

Dubas doesn't have full autonomy to do many things without adult supervision or approval first. Many outside GMs that were interested would never take this job based on the limitations that would come with it.

Quintessential Mess.

Now announcing, Mark Hunter as A. GM and head of scouting! Yes he was already in those positions but let's announce it again!
we'll be hearing his boy Jarvis (i believe that's his name) from his Soo days announced as our next AGM and head of scouting some time this summer

Simply put a great decision. I love how he talks about finding new ways to improve how teams are run, evaluate players and find new inefficiencies to exploit to their advantage. It’s about time the Leafs had a GM on the cutting edge of things.

Shanahan has made the right call at almost every turn so far, and while this decision isn’t exactly surprising (ie all signs pointed to it) even sceptical fans should get behind the move!

No we won't. Why are you even posting man, like do you really think you're adding to the discussion?

Not happy with this, especially if it’s going to cost us Hunter.

I just don’t think he’s ready, no rhyme or reason to the feeling, but it’s there.

I think other GMs are thinking they are going to school him and I very much wanted Lou doing our Big 3’s contracts.

I will be more than happy to eat my words but not a good feeling.

That would be my only concern. Hunter is the key to it all. I was one of the few who voted as such back when there was a poll on the importance of each person in front office. I hope he is happy doing what he does and we back a truck of money up to keep him that way.

Hunter will have the main say in who the Leafs are drafting.
Babcock will have the main say in who the Leafs are dressing and playing on Leafs roster.
Shanahan will have the main say in all big trades, UFA signings and new player contracts, hirings, firings and also buyouts etc.

Dubas as GM will have the smallest role in the management team and often deferring to others above and around him to direct him as needed. Dubas is well insulated and can continue to grow into the role of full GM with the authority over time.

Kyle is a great team player, smart and well spoken and works well with Shanny, Hunter and Babcock so its the perfect fit for the Leafs organization at this time. He is more of a prospect GM at present that still needs more development time and experience before he will be handed the reins of general manger fully.

no GM in the league handles the drafting
no GM in the league choose lineups for the games

as for the Shanny part that's hilariously bad, you can believe whatever you want

when the Leafs win a cup I expect people to give most of the credit to Lou aswell.

fact is this is a great hire based on everything we've heard, and he will be doing the GM's job just like the other 30 GM's in the league...

so with his hire we've gone from a consensus approach many were saying here to Dubas making all the decisions ?

better for his fan club to to believe it's still a mgmt by consensus approach , that way they can blame any mistake on someone else

Have you been in a room with people passionate about something? You won't always find consensus, so someone has to step in with the final decision.

Who says that's not Dubas?

!@#$

Well, if that isn't a big slap in the face to Hunter, dunno what is.

Happy trails, Mark...

I think the general worry with Dubas isnt age, its approach. People are still very wary of an analytics first approach to teambuilding, and rightfully so, just look at the genius over in Arizona.

Personally i think Dubas is going to have a lot of support from all of the right people in the organisation, whether he ignores it or not will be interesting to see.

The moves he makes this offseason will be incredibly interesting.

A significant portion of the Dubas hate is most definitely out of ageism, and that's a relationship that is most definitely being experienced out in the real world between X/Ys and Boomers.

But yeah I definitely agree that you shouldn't judge qualifications based on age, there's morons and geniuses in each generation, it's when people use Dubas' age as a negative it comes off so weak.

Yes, but I bet the people talking about his age (lack of experience) are in every group of Silent through Gen Z.

While obviously Shanahan is still likely a major player in the decision making process, Dubas is no more figurehead than ally was in the same position. Dubas will have opportunity to shape the direction of the Leafs (and likely based on how close the two are, it’s the same vision as Shanny’s)

Yes, yes, and no. Shanahan wouldn't have brought in Lou to not have the final say in those types of things. Saying Shanny will do Dubas' job for him just seems asinine. I fully believe Dubas should and will have the final say in all decisions as he's the GM now.

They'll still most likely be extremely consensus based, but it all ends up being on him.

yup someone had to step up and make the final decision but that hasn't all of the sudden changed with this hire

I'll look for it, but Dubas made the trade based on marincins possession numbers, I do remember that and how they said he had the potential to be a top 4 pairing guy
I've been looking, but I see no comment like that. Either way, I don't really think that matters all that much. He took a flier on a struggling player because there were reasons to believe he had upside. He was wrong, but everybody is about situations like that and quite often too.

That would be my only concern. Hunter is the key to it all. I was one of the few who voted as such back when there was a poll on the importance of each person in front office. I hope he is happy doing what he does and we back a truck of money up to keep him that way.
Based on the information available to this point, there's really no reason to believe that Hunter is not replaceable. We can argue whether drafting has been good or just OK, but early returns are definitely not been what you'd expect from someone who is irreplaceable. I hope he stays though, at least for a while longer.
