ya Crosby is the best ever. Is this even up for debate?
He's my favourite player since he came in and has done some great things but c'mon "the best ever" ?? You're pretty much claiming him the GOAT. Which is not true at all. A lot of players from previous eras can be claimed as the best ever, before Crosby is even mentioned.

I think it depends on how you take this. He may not have talked to anyone, but it looks like he at least considered outside candidates:

my internet is screwy i can't see ANYTHING except this website and facebook lol

He said he examined options outside the organization. Not sure how anyone is saying he didn't look outside at all.

it might just be the words smith in me

saying you "examined" something - means that you just took a look around and thought "no i'm good."
saying you interviewed people means you've talked to people.

Shanahan is really careful in what he says so for me, it's not potato/pohtahto. however. to cease argument, i did say I would stand corrected - so I'll stand corrected.Shanahan did his due diligence.

i think he stays until the draft unless in his meeting with Dubas he gets dictated on what type of player to draft and then he walks

Are you just looking for reason to cause a rift? I bet Lou never 'dictated' to Hunter who he should draft and since the whole reason for having Lou around is so Kyle could learn from him, why would it change?

"Brendan Shanahan: “I definitely examined prospects outside of our organization...the answer was within our own organization.”"

Okay, Shanahan knew Lamoriello was being moved from the GM position for 3 years. He signed him with that goal in mind.

I don't think he had to wait until he made that call to be looking around at options. Pure speculation, but I would think Shanahan had a good idea of who was already available in the market for the past year, and how may GM's have been left go this year.

Wild fire GM Chuck Fletcher, who leaves behind a mess

It's like some people never think ahead or have contingencies.

I know some people were excited when Burke resigned and move back full time to Toronto. :help:

Personally and it might be reading to much into it my thought was that maybe he had eyes for a really big fish from another team. Put the feelers out over the last few days and got turned down and then went to Dubas or Hunter as options.

For the record, I understand Dubas isn't ALL analytical. Pure analytics doesn't take in to account the eye test or pure talent that isn't observable through just numbers. My point about him is that he will know that guys like Polak, Komarov or anyone similar are complete liabilities from both an analytics and eye test perspective. It's a symbiotic relationship where most players who have good underlying numbers end up also being good players themselves. That's why I am hopeful that we won't see many plugs (Clune is on there yes, but you can't have a team full of rookies) if at all with the Leafs going forward. He has been groomed by Lou, so he knows the ropes.

I like this.

Expectation was set that this would happen in year 3 or 4. That it is happening in year 3 tells me Shanahan believes Dubas is ready.

Now that said
Mr Dubas, a defenseman please.

Crosby is the goat. If he played in any other era he would embarrass it. McDavid if he continues on his career arc will be the new greatest player but he still has 10ish years to go.

He spent more time in Toronto than Calgary since they hired him. I don't think he's been able to really fully work since around 2010. Personal tragedies can take their toll, and I don't think he was comfortable being away from his family all the time. He is very frequently seen around the Leaside community and lives in Bennington Heights.

Yeah he did examine, but examine and interview to give credit are two different things, even though examine is somewhat of a synonym to interview. But him saying the answer was within the organization pretty much sums it up.

"they examined the bank records"
2.
test the knowledge or proficiency of (someone) by requiring them to answer questions or perform tasks.
"the colleges set standards by examining candidates"
synonyms: test, quiz, question;

in·ter·view

a meeting of people face to face, especially for consultation.
synonyms: meeting, discussion, conference, examination, interrogation; More

hold an interview with (someone).
"he arrived to be interviewed by a local TV station about the level of unemployment"

examine, or interviewed?
imo Dubas was his choice the second he decided not to bring back LL

i believe he has confidence in Dubas but i also believe he choose him because he wants to be even more involved in the day to day decisions

Leafs should just make Hunter the new GM of the Marlies. He'd practically be in charge of the Leafs' entire pro youth development and would still get to do pretty much anything he wants. Like what else could he want? Better title? More money? He'd get a better title by being the GM of the Marlies (or at least he'd get another title to add to like the 5 he already has) and we could easily offer him more money, especially if he's willing to take on more AGM responsibilities so the Leafs don't need to hire someone new. Other than that, he just needs to get his ego out of the way and understand that Dubas is the GM.

lol without getting in trouble. Shanahan is smart. haha

with who and how could i possibly cause a rift with ?

you must be one of these delusional posters who actually think what is said here carries some weight with the Leafs , lol

well..shanahan did say that if he's needed by Kyle he will BE there. But when he's not needed he doesn't mind being told to get out lol. had quite the laugh there when he said it.

I know you need to do your own due diligence, but when Hunter and Dubas were first brought in as AGMs the thought was one of them would be Lou's successor. The fact the he went with one of them means his plan is still in place. Shanahan was pretty much in a no-win situation for some people.

I'm not trying to be harsh or critical of those that may have preferred Hunter over Dubas for clear reasons, but his choices were:

1) Dubas -> Those that prefer Hunter would be upset
2) Hunter -> Those that prefer Dubas would be upset.
3) Outsider -> Well what was the point of hiring Hunter/Dubas. What about the plan!

I just go back to Lou's hiring where he said if Dubas wasn't the GM in 3 years it would be Dubas' own fault.

Now Shanahan at least thought about looking outside and didn't just go with "It's either Hunter or Dubas". It seems he was obviously happy with how they were doing. And clearly Dubas did all the right things (Marlies and likely more we don't know about publically) to be the next GM.

I do get the not everyone will be happy with this hire, and the Dubas is still unproven at the NHL level (as is Hunter), and if there are slip ups the criticism will be huge. I like the move because it is going with the plan we've be told. That obviously could change.

I'm also not saying he just went with the 'safe path' by going with Dubas either. It really does seem he was thinking about this for a bit.
