If he feels disrespected he'll leave. He makes so much from just owning the Knights that the Leafs would need to pay him a ridiculous amount to stay. He's one of the few people where money isn't a major factor. Very few people in the NHL have the supplemental income that Hunter does.

which is why he'll remain as a scout since he knew this three years ago and still signed

Babcock wanted Hanifin.

You can't expect someone to dramatically beat the odds of picks. If we got 2 NHLers out of Hunters 5 2nd rounders that is significantly beating the odds of those pick ranges.

I love hunter with the leafs. He is far from irreplaceable though. There are head scouts out there. Unless hunter gets a gm job elsewhere if he leaves then is that attitude we want? Someone who can’t handle missing out on a job so quits? Not sure myself. If hunter became gm we would also need a new head scout

It was a jape, my friend, not a serious response.

Let's hope Hunter stays, because I do think he's a valuable asset and a good scout. But we gotta start seeing more results from that.
I hope Hunter stays, my only concern is the way people think good management people are easily found, they aren’t. If we can keep Hunter I like this move more, if we don’t then it brings more risk from here. I really like Dubas, and obviously root for him to succeed.

What option do we have if he quits? I don’t get this, so we should of made hunter gm to keep him? But then he wouldn’t be the scout. Our hands are tied here if he decides to quit

This is a question that I'm quite passionate about, and that's that looking at the average odds is not the way to go. The picks from about 11-60 is where pretty much all the separation between great scouting teams and the awful ones come from. While some teams pick quality prospects on almost every pick in that range and produce a steady stream of quality players, others (like the Leafs pre-Shanahan) barely ever hit in that range.

The ambition should be to have a top end scouting group, and such a group should be able to produce quality prospects in that range consistently.

I think the fact that the average is where it is pulls down the value of second rounders, which a great drafting team could use by outperforming that average by a long shot. 40% is better than average, but teams like Anaheim seem to more or less double that.

So, simply put, I want to see better. Though you did use NHL players as benchmark there and not quality prospects, so we'll have to wait and see if the number will grow.

You know we can’t just take an employed gm right? Unless they are fired. So which available gm right now do you wish they looked into

i never said i wanted him to take on an employed GM.
i wanted him to interview people. which you can do.

I’m perfectly fine with losing Hunter if he can’t accept Dubas as GM.

While there is still some time before we can fully judge his drafts, I have not been impressed with our picks outside of the obvious ones.

I would have left Lou in place, as he desired. Everyone in the same role one or two more years. Lou’s a hard ass, I liked the idea of him doing these contracts and I’ve liked his GM moves in totality. This wasn’t a necessary move, so if we lose Lou and Mark, it’s hard for me to see the upside overall. We should be a serious cup contender next year, a couple moves and I believe we are right there. Anyways, I think this move has brought a risk that wasn’t there prior, so I’m not ecstatic Shanny did this, particularly when it’s clear Lou wanted to stay. What up and coming organization essentially “cleans house”, which is what we’ve done if we’ve lost our 1 and 2 people on the depth chart. Forward we go, hope it’s a winner move.

Except I could say the same thing about anyone in the organization not being irreplaceable. That applies to everyone from Shanahan down. Just because someone is deemed replaceable doesn't mean, I think that is the option I like.

I also think that quitting if you feel disrespected in your job is a perfectly rational response if you have mobility and financial freedom to do it. It generally happens all the time in high-level positions within all walks of life.

Mark it on your calendars, this is a momentous day in Leaf history. Hopefully for the right reasons.

Just due diligence. Make sure the best candidate is not outside the organization. If he did evaluate all options and still came out with Dubas as the best option then I think Daisy would be fine as she has mentioned. Shanny in his presser, said in his opinion that the best candidate was in-house and after he conducted his two interviews (Hunter & Dubas) he was confident in choosing Dubas to move on in his new role.

all I wanted was Shanahan to do his due diligence. to hear that he didn't really makes me disappointed.

Yeah.

Not to toot the "we're the Leafs" thing, but really if he wanted to go a get anyone who isn't already a G.M - Fenton we'll use as an example here, he could've conceivably done it.

It would be 2&4 people really. Shanny is 1 and dubas was obviously 3 in the pecking order. If shanny wanted dubas as gm another year or 2 of lou would mean we lose dubas right? And if hunter is quitting because dubas is gm and he wanted the gig he should quit too if lou was rehired no?

Why interview people if you already know who you want? Who you have seen for the last three years.

Who has ticked every box for you to feel comfortable with him as gm. All interviews will donis people saying what they can do while shanny has direct visual evidence of what dubas can do

I'm excited for this. A little nervous with the laxk of experience, but he's been with the crew for a couple years so I think it will be a smooth transition.

And I love hunter so I hope he stays. I think he will.

Sure, but good organizations lose good people. It just happens.

- If Lou stays as GM, we maybe lose Dubas & Hunter to GM opportunities.
- If Hunter becomes GM, we maybe lose Dubas & Lou to GM opportunities.
- Dubas has become GM, so maybe we'll lose Hunter & Lou to GM opportunities.

Nothing has changed imo except that we put the guy in charge we wanted.
