First of all the front office is a team and works like a team. The GM has final say and decides which route to follow. That's the normal way things go.
Unless you have evidence of anything otherwise your guessing here.

Presidents now have final say. Especially those with president of Hockey Operations titles. Shanny makes the final call. He approves, GM's do the leg work now. There are some GM's who hold VP of hockey op titles and they usually have full autonomy

and yet many on here believed LL didn't have full autonomy and was just a figurehead

We will never know, so speculating is only ever going to be flinging shit.

The one positive about this is that Kyle Dubas *should* have a lot more say in the room, And he Will no longer have to worry about things like the Marlies. His full time job is now to manage the Leafs and that gives me a lot of confidence we're moving in the right direction.

So what exactly are people looking for in order to build trust in Dubas?
Are expectations realistic? We've had GMs with years of experience unable to acquire the magic no. 1 C or D or whatever piece people think is readily available.

For me, Dubas has his work cut out for him.
How he handles the Nylander contract is critical.
As always in my book, asset management is HUGE. Knowing when to move on from players not in the plan. So what happens with Gardiner? No own rental please.
Then how does he fill out some of the holes on this roster. 3C - 4C, wingers capable of playing with speed, IQ and winning puck battles.
These things will all be the first big test.

Food for thought regarding Hunter. Personally would be sad to see him go but another draft out of him would be a positive at least?

Like I said, I don't love the move but I support it. I wanna see at least a year or two of work before I judge. There will be mistakes and there will be good moves.

call him what you like but i see him leaving before the season starts and i'm sure Dubas would love nothing better than for him to leave and to name his own guy as a replacement

Speculation at best. We’ve never heard they don’t like each other. He is a above average scout he leaves we repalce him life goes on. It’s not like he is the best scout in the game. It’s really not as big a deal as you are making out

good stuff.

dubas will temper babcock's weaknesses, and babcock will temper dubas' weaknesses.

it should bring the team into a nice balance, with cold hard analytics taking the lead but intangibles not being neglected, either.
That's what this is all about, getting sucked into one view point and blocking out other options or opportunities limits how well they can operate imo.
They'll talk about everything and Shanahan will have the final say.

Fair enough but the way mess was representing it was that Dubas was a puppet

Congrats Dubas!
Let’s hope Babcock doesn’t bully him into doing stupid stuff.

And it already begins, any bad choice Dubas makes is because he was forced into it?

I'm happy Dubas got the job but getting the job means he's now responsible for the decisions you like and the decisions you hate. No more of this only Dubas gets credit for the good moves and the bad moves he must have been overruled.

imagine thats how it worked?

That’s how it worked I’m not sure what you mean here?. Hunter as agm would have had beongnin charge of drafts as one of his jobs. The gm has very little input into the selections hunter and team created the lists and Lou would come to him about trades with hunter saying yeah go for it or no we can get this player at our pick

Do you believe Dubas could fire the coach Babcock just like other GMs in the league, or fire scouts like Hunter?

Do you think Dubas could trade anyone off the roster like say Matthews like other GMs?

Do you think its Dubas alone that will negotiate and decide Matthews, Marner next contracts etc like most GMs would?

Do you think Dubas could buyout Zaitsev or Marleau etc without approval?

This is what I'm getting at, and unlike when Leafs hired greenhorn JFJ last time and he could sign, trade and run the show and make mistakes without having to answer to anyone but ownership, this time the new GM in training Dubas has lots of restrictions on his job description that a normal GM wouldn't have, and is well insulted with others around him that will be calling their own shots.

I don't think any GM in the League would trade their # 1 player without owner's permission (see Lecavalier in Tampa and Leafs) and I don't think any GM would fire a coach without owner's approval due to the cost of doing business. I don't think you have any idea how NHL teams operate.

Some people will only like him if he's 20 years older.
Dubas does have his work cut out for him but I'm excited to see what kind of out of the box thinking we'll get from him.

For the contract negotiations I wonder if Dubas' time as a player agent will help?
He should know how to work the agent and that's who is really doing the negotiations not the player
Hmmm
