Some bad goaltending luck (plus one super petty bastard of an inherited coach) really stopped people from appreciating that we have the best gm in hockey.
GM’s usually hire their own coaches, why didn’t he replace Babcock earlier, it was obvious they weren’t on the same page? Hasn’t handled the goalie position well either, luck has nothing to do with it imo.

Im a Dubas fan. Hope he’s our GM for a long long time.

However, we can’t really call him the best GM in hockey until we at least have some form of playoff success.

I think it’ll happen. I think we have a great chance of coming out of the division. But we need it to happen first

Since Dubas got his coach in place

Tampa has a good d ... but clearly they're helped out by their goalie quite a bit. I like Andy but switch goalies and you wonder where Leafs are at.

Dubas has been a good GM though. Certainly does well at evaluating talent and putting the right scouts in place to find it.

Wasnt it rumoured that Dubas wanted to fire Babcock that last offseason but Shanny blocked it?
Are you implying that this superstar GM cannot make team decisions without the president’s okay, and if so is he really a legit GM or just Shanahan’s puppet?

Or things aren't quite as black and white as that. Shanahan is Dubas boss (as he was Lous), Shanahan hired Babcock to the largest contact for amy coach in nhl history.

Hardly unsurprising that Shanahan may have been hesitant to approve the firing after so soon

Coach selection is a GM’s call, at least the one’s without strings attached, if Dubas cannot make his own decisions he’s just a Shanahan puppet ala JFJ was to Richard Peddie.

Um ya thats usually how it works.

Of course he'd have to get the okay from his superior to fire the highest paid coach in the league.

GMs often have to to go to their ownership boards or their representatives to get approval for major financial decisions.

Polie in Nashville for example needed to get approval before matching that Flyers offersheet on Weber a few years ago.

Id say firing a coach making 6 mil a year would qualify for that.

Signing Jumbo and resigning Spezza have been undercover god like moves.
And combined they make 1.4 million. THis is why the crap about 4 players 40 million is nonsense. It says nothing about what the other 50% is spent on.
Other GMs will copy the Leafs and 4th liners will all have to settle for 750-1 million. It's crazy to see guys much worse than Thornton and Spezza making 3 million+ per.

And the issue is Babcock was best buds with TAnenbaum, so you have that to deal with as well.

Issue wouldn’t be that he needed permission but that he was refused.

Not to mention the former coach of team Canada. Babcock still carried a lot of weight in the tightly-knit hockey world. With a rookie GM this always was going to be a Shanny firing especially since Babs still had so much term remaining. If it was too late then it falls on the president.

Given the state of our prospect pool and the core this organization is in great shape to compete for a long time.
Being 34 "Only" is an advantage. It's not a bad thing at all kike has been spun about him. Think David Poile in his 70's with his "Experience" would be better?
