4 of the last 12 cups is one hell of an "exception." You could a 5th in Doug Armstrong whose 3 mediocre years of junior A had him spend less time in a CHL organization growing up than Dubas.

Imo suggesting that a season or two of medicore junior, cis or NCAA play is necessary to understand hockey management of the most competitive league in the world is pretty nonsensical.

Just like having a learner's permit doesn't make you qualified to manage an F1 racing team. Some of the most renowned NHL coaches never came remotely close to playing pro hockey

I don’t envy Dubas before the TDL he has some difficult choices to make to make us a contender and playoff ready. I trust his judgment

I'm not sure what difficult choices he really needs to make.

We're ready to go all in, but I'm not sure what we would even need to go all in on. The only real needs I see, are an injury reserve defenseman, and a better backup than Hutchinson. It's too late for Andersen to come back, and show us he can return from his injury and turn his season around before the deadline, so we got to do something there.

But other than, just make upgrades if the deals make sense.

How much of that 116 point pace is due to playing Ottawa, Vancouver and Calgary 9 to 10 times a season and Zero against TB, BOS, PITT, WAS, COL, etc etc and all the other good teams?

Leafs aren't playing 24 of the 30 other NHL teams or 80% of the league and only playing 6 of the 24 or 20%.

So I guess you can see Leafs are on a 116 point pace when compared to just 20% of the overall NHL teams.

Must just kill you that Babcock wasn't here to take advantage of this

i have seen some horrible deals. What may seem like the best moves actually haunts you years later. I remember Gretzky was close to signing to the Leafs, and too many other moves where we ended up getting the short end of the stick

You told us that Vancouver and Calgary were every bit as good as the leafs coming into the season, if not better.
At no point was Mess even close to under the impression that the Leafs would win the Canadian division - in fact he was adamant they would struggle within it.

Well here we are - and the complete 180 has been done and now we're expected to win this division. This place is way too entertaining sometimes.

And so are you, you can't even explain it. All you can offer is "Well Lou won GM of the year". Very interesting!
I shouldn’t need to explain the intangible qualities of Leo Komorov to a Maple Leafs fan. That’s more basic shit that seems to be a theme every time we interact.

The argument is how much that’s worth to your team. I agree $3M is too much, but the Islanders were comfortable with it. Given that they continue to exceed expectations, it’s hard to argue.

this place is like Las Vegas weather if it was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Recently though since Soupy is our starter we have achieved more normalcy and the general vibe on here is at least 25% more positive.

when looking at the strength of division and how easy is it to accumulate points. I look at the 2 bottom place teams in each division to determine what division has the most amount of "easy games"

Central:
CBJ (14-18-8)
DET (13-22-5)

East:
NJ (13-17-6)
BUF (8-23-6)

North:
CGY (16-21-3)
OTT (13-22-4)

West:
LA (14-17-6)
ANA (11-21-7)

I'd rather the Leafs play 8 games each against any of those bottom feeder teams over CGY and OTT. The North division might be the only Division in Hockey that has no guaranteed wins. COL can play their C+ game and still beat ANA. WSH could be up all night and be hung titty on game day and still wax BUF any day of the week. We are a very good team, in a good division.

The two bottom teams seems arbitrary. I'd take last years standings for all teams and calculate average. Ppg for each division.

I haven't done the math but I suspect our division is indeed weak, but not so weak that it's a huge deal.

Last year ppg

East 1.194
West 1.098
Central 1.085
North 1.083

So we agree, a mistake by Lou. Just a continuation of numerous mistakes he made with the Leafs where he blew Nylander, Matthews and Marner's ELC years with similarly bad signings.

Even if the Division is weak it doesn’t mean the Leafs are weak.

Lou's worst contracts are still a few years from being ripe.
Eberle, Nelson, Bailey, pageau. Paying all these guys top dollars to play as 33-34 year olds is not a good formula.

Sweet Lou just keeps on winning, and has for decades, he gets it done...

So we are the worst. I'm surprised the gap from top to bottom is that big TBH but whatever.

Of course not, it just shows that points might be easier for us to come by then for teams in tougher divisions.

Well, there’s one division a good bit ahead of the other three, based on last year's points.

In his last 8 seasons with the Devils they made it out of the 1st round once and missed the playoffs 4 out of the last 5 years, and were in such good shape for his successor that they've made the playoffs once in the 6 years after his departure.
wow, let me guess, you think Dubas is the greatest GM to ever GM a team already right? if I look in this thread am i going to find you praising dubas and trashing Lou?

Dubas should have gone after Perry in the offseason over someone like Jimmy Vesey, but it was the Jimmy Vesey error that probably spurred on the Alex Galchenyuk experiment, which has worked out well.
