Player Discussion Drake Batherson (RW) - Part II

Were you never exposed to criticism or something? He literally says like 2 posts up how good Batherson played the other night. Batherson can be a good player and still have bad games worth criticizing.

Earlier post got deleted and rightfully so. I’ll try again.

Earlier you called me cringey for saying the same thing multiple times . Kind of like how your replying to me ?

Anyways ya I got a lil charged because I feel it is unwarranted criticism , gotta remember he isn’t getting paid like a 8m dollar guy . So when his role is a 5m$ offensive winger , and he is pacing for 65ish points over his worst stretch of hockey in 3 years . I think it’s the complete opposite of intillegent out of all our problems to be harping on this guy who is clearly a plus on this team. Even more opposite of smart when your taking about trading him and all the value he brings because of what 25ish games of not looking like the best player on the team he was last year ? There are players on this team who are responsible and paid to take that role

My expectations from Batherson are pretty simple, he should be scoring at the same rate he did last year. He had a .95 ppg clip which paces at 78 points for the year. Right now he's scoring at .80 ppg (about 66 points).

Batherson set the standard for himself last season and its not unreasonable to expect him to hit that, especially as he grows more experienced. Having Norris and Brady on his line would definitely help though

His standard last season was above PPG actually.

When he came back from his awful ankle injury to end the season his numbers dipped a little bit.

It seems like he is still trying to reach the level he was at before getting injured last year.

9 points in his last 8 games, including 6 in his last 4.

Despite all the criticism he was getting before, his stats were still worthy of his cap number.

But for me what makes the difference between the good Drake and the ineffective one simply comes down being physical. He needs to use his size to make plays down lown and on the forecheck.

When he tries to play a game focused firstly on finess and distribution, he gets lost out there imo. He tries to often to make something from nothing. But when he just crashes and bangs, plays north and south, and gets in hard on the play - the chaos opens up spontaneous opportunities for his innate talent to take over and make quick skilled plays from in close.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Point totals are a complete fraud...

Number 1 problem on this team sure putting up the fraud points
I just call it as I see it. Applies to both your posts and at some points of the season, also Batherson's game. He was the best player on the team last year and that's why the criticism is warranted when he plays as bad as he has some games.

He's a big reason why we got 2 points yesterday but him handcuffing Sanderson and blowing the zone is also one of the main reasons we only got 1 point vs Dallas, and that's fair to criticize.

I don't put much stock into +/- but Drake is -18 on the season, with the next closest player being -9, so to this point in the season he definitely does deserve criticism for his defensive play.

I am more so rubbing it into a dumb comment from a poster who has liked to to troll over the years. It also goes towards the guys putting Batherson into trade talks over that stretch.

I am not calling the fans who want to be edgy by calling out a struggling core player, more so the ones saying he is our number 1 problem.

its not 'edgy', its calling it as some see it. You seem to take this way too personally.

Coladin doesn't seem like a troll at all, bizarre to label them that. Again, you also conveniently ignored the post a couple days ago where he was singing Batherson's praises. Being edgy would be calling Batherson an AHLer, all I've seen is people criticizing his play because we all know the player he's capable of being.

One good game. He needs to continue and play the way he can. He has been terrible for 6 weeks. But enjoy the points in that timespan

He's on a different line though which isn't exactly clicking, yet. Last year, when healthy the 7-9-19 line was exceptional, arguably better than our top line this year.

He is noticeably a step off this year, no question but I think its unfair to compare apples to apples last year due to the line combos and less than ideal pp usage early this season.

I personally have no concerns about Drake. He has shown the same flashes and he'll get it back. I think he might just still be strengthening the ankle and recovering to his old level of mobility.

Man, I can't wait until Josh is back... frickkkk man.

Our 2nd line consists of:

a "struggling" winger with a career 0.83 p/gp currently playing at a .81.
a defensively responsible rookie 3C playing above his level. Currently a .48.
a "struggling" winger with a career 0.69 p/gp currently playing at a .85.

Imagine how good DBC and Batherson will look with one of Stutzle or Norris instead of a rookie?

I love Shane but .48 and 4 assists is simply not enough to play with two separate p/gp capable wingers.

So we agree then? You can look at the dollars of what he is paid, and because he was a bargain does not change expectations. I don’t even know how you rationalize that train of thought. It’s dumb

I love it how you blame the rookie on that line. Those two wingers should be raising his game, not the other way around

Your expecting Batherson to be a .9ppg guy while playing shut down defensive hockey . How much do those kind of guys get paid ? I am pretty sure expectations come with the contract when he performs above it , it’s a bonus.

My expectation has nothing to do with points. It has to do with winning games. Does it matter being 32nd and he is .9ppg guy, or being 16th and he is a .6ppg guy?

Of course it does. Especially in a salary cap system.

I hope you're not somebody's boss.

There is no player in the league that would switch a team from 16 to 32 or vice versa. Drake Batherson brings high level of offence at low cost, if he isn't being utilized correctly it is not on him.

I can guarantee you if you waive Batherson all 31 guys will put in a claim.

Who’s waiving him. Are you nuts.

I just want the guy to cover the point when he doesn’t have the puck. I want him to track alllllll the way back. Not cheat. I want him to get the puck, not flyby and waive your stick for show.

The guy played well on the road. If he continues like that he will be fine. But he has not been doing that for 6 weeks is all
