Player Discussion Drake Batherson (RW) - Part II

I'm generally for a coaching change but the argument against it is examples of teams that stuck it out and found success, so for example, many were calling for Ruff to be fired after a slow start this year, now NJD are arguably the best team in the league, people were calling for Cooper to be fired after TBay got swept in the first round, they went up to win back to back cups, there are a number of examples over the years and I guess some worry DJ could be the next since he's always had a bit of a flawed roster to work with.

freidman stated that Cooper is the only real one out of the norm and that makes tampa run even more impressive. To win back to back cups though you need a special group of management and players. I would say they are not the norm

I suspect if Lindy had a poor start like Smith he would have been on the hot seat. If DJ had a hot start people would be on his side to stay for sure. At this point we are near the bottom and a coaching change could definitely bump the team up which has been shown to work in the past

Whatever reason people have or what people say I think its pretty sensible to want to try a different coach with what we have seen with coaching changes previously

Batherson? He's pacing for 65pts and only 17 goals. Not a great stat, but -17 is more than two times worse than anyone else on the team.

He has had pretty bad puck luck (on ice shooting % of just 5.9 and a SVP of .858), but I think it is pretty clear that he is one of our two most underperforming players along with Chabot. I think its Batherson by far but I am probably more forgiving of Chabot than most.

I projected Batherson to lead our team in scoring last year so maybe I just have high expectations of him, but he has had a pretty massive drop in play since Dell injured him. If he can return to that form, it would make a massive difference to our team.

Fair, of course there are far bigger issues. But of players on the team, he is probably the guy we need to step up the most.

He has been horrible and his point totals are a complete fraud. If anyone saw this guy play before this year, they would know this is not the Drake Batherson that we are used to. Enjoy the points though

The difference this year as opposed to other years for Batherson is effort and attention to detail. I see him constantly giving up on plays which is something I've never seen from him before. I also see him making lots of little 'brain fart' plays with the puck. Just small attention to detail things like not taking a beat to look around before attempting a pass. And when a puck is mishandled or a pass goes errant, he seems to just sort of resign himself to the error rather than double down harder to fix it. I think his head isn't as clear and focused as it should be. Could be just fatigue or maybe this is when he will go through the 'sophomore jinx', but he needs to get his head right. You have to take care of the puck first before anything and he's not doing that.

No one is saying he doesn’t need to improve.

Spot on. And I hate to draw this comparison, because Drake is obviously still a very good player and way better than who I'm about to compare him to, even at his worst... but the things you're describing remind me of Dadonov.

Ya, I realized that later after posting that it was Batherson that everyone was talking about.

On your other sentence and point is that we traded 7th overall for PP apples (ADB). That's an important distinction versus the players we already had on the roster.

Completely agree. My son was messaging me freaking out about those two plays. I told him basically what you just stated. That guy last night? I recognize. More of that please. That line was much better 5 on 5 because Drake was .

What is the 1st play you are mentioning?

I am still stunned that he had time with Seguin already down, flipped a pass that went off the back of our net and then took off while Sanderson clearly wasn't getting the puck cleanly.

He had lots of time to wait to see if Sandy had control and still make it a 2-1, absolutely no reason to abandon the zone like that.

Were you never exposed to criticism or something? He literally says like 2 posts up how good Batherson played the other night. Batherson can be a good player and still have bad games worth criticizing.
