All these big money, long term contracts are risks. Doesn't matter if they are given to kids like Draisatl or veterans like Toews. We don't know for sure if Draisatl keeps progressing and becomes the player we hope he'll be or if Toews continues to do what he had done in the past. There are no guarantees. If I was in Penguins management, I'd have been nervous giving Crosby his last extension after all the health problems he'd had. You have to decide which risks are acceptable to your team moving forward.

I'm very comfortable risking the teams long term future on McDavid and Draisatl, both of them. I wish the cap hit would have been lower but it is what it is. We wanted elite players and now that we have them we have to pay for them. There isn't another duo I would trade them for at that cap hit and term going forward. To me, that's the issue. Could we have gotten better players for the money we spent? I don't see how.

I hate Tom Brady, but this is complete and utter BS. Brady is actually a great player, Toews is not, full stop.

And it's not 1 bad year, it's never had a specially year worth $10M a season. He's the most overpaid and, after last season, the most overrated player in NHL history.

Toews was a great player in his prime. But he's on the wrong side of his twenties with a huge long-term cotract. You just can't afford to pay that money to a 2nd line center, who most likely will be a mere 3rd line in 3-4 years.

Toews is so vastly overrated. He has all these championships, but look at the stacked teams he has played on. Guy has hit 70 pts only once in his career and hasn't even hit 60 pts in the last two.

This, SO Much this. He's a very good player, but he's nothing resembling way he's treated as a player or the money he makes.

Toews was overpayed last year. But he is the Tom Brady of the NHL. He may never translate into his contract as points are concerned..but his dynamic into the 2way game is well deserved

People are sh**ing on Toews after 1 bad year. It's laughable. A 60 point Toews in his prime is well worth the $. The guy controls the game so far beyond points

Comparing Jonathan Toews to the best player in football is such an awful comparison.

The comparison is that much more ridiculous when it's the best player in football history (at least pretty darned close).

Does anyone actually think Toews is top-ten all time in the NHL?

One thing I know is I wouldnt bet against any team with Toews, Kane, and Keith on it.

A prime Toews and McDavid would be bagging cup after cup. Elite two way forwards with intagibles do not grow on trees, but neither they are worth 10M at the age of 29. Toews at 21 was a better player than Draisaitl. 21 year old Draisaitl at 8.5M is a much better option than Toews at 10.5M.

Those Selke nods say otherwise:shakehead

A 50 point Toews is underwhelming. Those 60 point seasons doing what he does....terrific

Toews is regressing, no doubt. If anything i thought other NHL teams would learn it's not sound investment to dump 20++ million on just 2 roster slots as it tends to kill depth but it is what it is.

So Leon and McD are gonna regress now too?

He has one Selke trophy

Patrice Bergeron can do whatever Toews can, at a fraction of the cap hit (he has 4 Selke's), the only problem is he doesn't play on a team with Kane, or Hossa
So he gets less attention

Huh? Oilers are smart enough to pay McDavid and Drai in their primes
As opposed to a 50 point Toews that's making 10.5 million for past accomplishments

I agree. I know they won you 3 cups, but it doesn't mean you just pay them to retire there. They will regress. It would take a lot of balls, but they could have tried to trade 1 for a haul to take care of the long term.

They are lauded because they are going to be overpaying guys until they retire.

What do team accolades have to do with anything?

Yes, Bergeron is a stud. But how does that retract from the fact Toews is a beast on FO's, 2way game, dzone and forechck

1 bad year does not define his worth IMO. He is what you want in a C

Again, a 60 point Toews is well worth the $ in what he brings to the table as far as his intangibles

PS: Don't try and make one team more privileged than others to make a point. Bos has Kreji, Marchand, Rask, Pastarnak, Chara also. It's not like they are less privileged

and this is where I (and many others) disagree...the old "intangibles" argument

if I'm paying a player 10.5 million, he better do more than just un-quantifiable "intangibles"

he better be winning individual offensive awards...like Patrick Kane

cause he's not the only one with awesome "intangibles"....like I said, I'd rather have Bergeron due to being relatively the same player....at 3.75 million dollars less

It isnt points.
