Draft Lottery (April 18) - 13th/14th Pick Speculation (2% Chance at Top Pick)

Anyone foolish enough to put their hopes in a two per cent chance of winning a lottery gets the disappointment they deserve. It's a small reward for having a dismal season, nothing more. If we get lucky and get McDavid its a huge bonus, nothing more and certainly nothing to pin our hopes to.

Okay, I've had enough fun with this, but I'm thinking some posters are misinterpreting the point of this thread, which is simply a discussion.

Sure it's interesting to speculate on getting McDavid, but I'm more interested in what the more prospect-knowledgeable posters here think what we can get in the 13th/14th position, and how it would help us fill our present needs, which I believe are this (not necessarily in this order):

3rd-line center
1st-line right wing
3rd-pairing defensemen (right shot)

I think we will resign Sekera and I do believe Voynov is coming back to make a dynamic second pair. The glaring problem with McNabb and Greene was made more than obvious on the road trip. McNabb is a 7th defensemen. Period. Greene needs to go, along with Stoll and Williams.

So, in my eyes, those are our needs. Who might be available at the 13th/14th positions?

(Title changed to reflect a better discussion.)

I'd rather win the lottery and then NOT pick McDavid. I'd do a deal with the Cryotes and get the 3rd, 30th, and 32nd overall picks in exchange for the 1st overall pick. So sue me.....

Think of that for a moment.

And then think of all the people playing the California lottery at ridiculous odds...171 million to 1, as I recall.

I'd like to think people playing the lottery are 99% of the time just buying a ticket but not pinning any sort of hope towards actually winning. I play one lottery up here every week, spend $11 on a ticket and check my numbers after the draw, but I'm not pinning any real value to the odds of winning.

Anyone doing anything more than idle daydreaming over a two per cent chance at winning this lottery is getting their hopes up with a 98 per cent chance of a let down.

i also don't know why you quoted my post twice either.

And you'd be fired in a nano-second. McDavid for whoever at 3rd (won't even be Eichel), and two picks which are basically highend seconds? Would you trade Doughty for that? Because guaranteed that McDavid pick can net you pretty much any player in the league you want, and likely significant pieces on top of it. Not only is he arguably better than Crosby was at that age, he brings instant PR which means instant ticket sales and plenty of other revenue streams. If he pans out even remotely close to what is expected of him, he'll be the best player in the league and make his teams multi-millions a year. It would be utter insanity to do the trade you suggested.

I think you draft best player available regardless of position (other than a goalie). at 13th or 14th whomever LA draft will likely not see the NHL for a couple years anyway.

If the Kings sign Sekera AND Voynov comes back they're going to have to move either Voynov or Martinez. Possibly even Greene. Just too much money on the back end.

I got my hopes up for Crosby. Didn't happen. Got my hopes up for Stamkos (though I really wanted Doughty). Didn't happen. Not getting my hopes up for McDavid.

IF it happens I'll laugh so hard in the faces of the "hahahah the NHL didn't get the Queens in the playoffs this time" / "hahahah go Flames" / "bandwaggoners back to the NBA" / "greatest day in my life" haters

I don't think anyone is actually thinking we will land McDavid. It's just fun to think about it.

Better than Crosby, eh? We'll see......

No way. When you have a McDavid available you don't trade that for anything.

PS: Are you from Liechtenstein?

At that age I said.

Crosby played two years of junior before being drafted. 121 games, 120 goals, 183 assists, 303 points.
McDavid over the last two seasons totalled 103 games, 72 goals and 219 points.

Crosby over his two years had a PPG of 2.525. McDavid over the past two years has a PPG of 2.13.

In their draft years, Crosby had a PPG of 2.71 (168 points in 62 games). McDavid has a PPG of 2.55.

Crosby outdoes McDavid slightly, however McDavid also plays in the OHL, not the QMJHL, where offense is notably higher and has been for decades. McDavid also nearly won the scoring title in the OHL despite missing 21 games, or 31 per cent of the regular season. He missed by nine points.

McDavid was on pace for 173 points if he had played a full 68 game season. For comparision sake, that would have been the fourth highest total ever, and he'd actually go to third highest based on points per game (third highest is Doug Gilmour with 177 points, but he had 70 games to do it). Only Bobby Smith and some guy named Gretzky would beat McDavid.

So yeah, arguably, McDavid could out do Crosby.

FWIW, ran it 50 times with the Sabres winning the most. The Coyotes, Devils, Oilers and Leafs rounded out the top 5 for most wins.

LA never won it.

Imagine if the Pens had traded Crosby for JMFJ, Vladimir Mihalik and Tyler Plante. They would probably be a dynasty tbh becuase then they wouldnt draft Fleury

You're joking, right? If you're actually serious, it may be the dumbest take I've ever read. Wow.
