Does Craig MacTavish understand that the game is only played with one puck at a time, and that other teams actually play defense?

Is it a joke, shame on the NHL, total disgrace. And the less that thrilled look on McDavid's face as he was shown wakling thru the corridor reflected that.he looked like someone just shot his dog.

I can't believe the league screwed up this badly. I'm really shocked.

Wtf?

I'll just leave this here:

I bet in MacT's office someplace there's a calendar from 1985.

Technically, MacTavish is correct. Offense or more correctly, possession of the puck, does win games. It's exactly how the Kings won two Cups.

Once they got passed San Jose and I was briefly relieved, I said to myself, "Why do I get the feeling the Oilers will win?"

Sure enough.

So funny all year we were saying just watch the Oilers get the First overall. And here they are. Just pathetic! Hope Eichel becomes twice the player McJesus is just because of all the Oiler Number ones!

I watched that thing and was dumbfounded when Edmonton won. Edmonton doesn't deserve him (the organization - not the city, fans, or teammates who are already poor, suffering ********) - and the kid doesn't deserve Edmonton.

I don't understand these desires for the kid to be a bust - he's simply tried to be the best player he can be - being drafted by Edmonton is enough of a horrible fate.

I'm pulling for the kid to overcomes the poor development, conditioning, coaching, bus rides, plane rides, team meals, and anything else that has the stink of the Oilers on it and becomes successful despite the odds.

I understand what your saying but I find it hard to root for players not on my team. Sorry just me! And yeah this kid is gonna be good unfortunately he's in our conference!

Poor *******. Another great career flushed. Edmonton sucks.

 good one! How hard it is to swallow that Edmonton got another 1st overall I think it's hard for the Oilers to screw this one up. I think he's already their best player.

Their management has a lot of talent for messing things up.:shakehead

amazing. This will ensure that the management all stay, and that they still dont trade for help on D.

Mcdavids reaction was priceless

The thing about the Oilers that is the most confusing is they are trying to bring back Boys On The Bus hockey but they forget they had players like Fuhr in net, Tikkanen who was one of the top pests/shut down wingers in the game, guys like Huddy, Lowe, Steve Smith and one of the best defensemen of all time in Paul Coffey on defense. You had Dave Semenko playing on wing with Gretzky and Kurri one of the greatest two way forwards, he was basically a second center since Gretzky didn't play D. Then, the current GM sans helmet MacTavish was a great 3d line center, which the Oilers don't have. They've now got Hall, Eberle, Yakupov, Nugent-Hopkins and MacDavid up front and literally nothing else other than that. Can anybody name a forward off hand in their bottom 6? How about their defensemen? They've built 1/3 of a good hockey team.

They don't even have a Glenn Anderson type forward who's willing to park himself in front of the net. The last Oiler to do that was Ryan Smyth. They also lack leadership like what they had with a guy like Buchberger who would go through a wall for his team. Nobody on that team will pay the price to win, there doesn't seem to be that level of pride, and I can see why given their perpetual position in the cellar of the Western Conference.

Oh yah, forgot about Glenn Anderson and one of the greatest leaders in the history of the game in Mark Messier. They literally are nothing like the 80's Oilers, they've got some good, young talent that lacks leadership, direction, elite goaltending and 6 defensemen. They're that close to being good again!

And they have lacked D for YEARS. Anyone with half a brain was screaming that they needed to shore up their D first.. 4 years ago. Yet here we still are and so long as the owner remains delusional, that's where they will remain.

I think there is very little chance that Hall, RNH, or McDavid finish their careers in Edmonton. So, in a way, I am fine with them getting these players. Imagine where the games of kids like Hall and RNH would be if developed properly.

It's the later rounds that kill the Oilers. They don't get any players out of them, for either their team, or to trade for something. It's not an easy place to get players to go to either. So they're left with top 5 picks, and just nothing else.

Technically, MacTavish doesn't know the first thing about building a contender. Puck possession starts with getting the puck back (good defensemen), and then getting the transition out of your zone started quickly and efficiently.

That and a strong forecheck, which I don't see in the repertoire of any of the forwards the Oilers have drafted #1 overall, is the key to the Kings game. The Oilers don't have much of any of the qualities valued the most by the Kings.

I don't really get why. It's only happened a couple times. Quebec did it, and then traded all three 1st overall picks before they won the Cup. None of which happened until they lucked with Roy. Then we have the Oilers now, who have been one of the most ineptly run organizations in, at least, recent history.

Look at Pittsburgh too. Crosby and Malkin, they have 1 Cup.

I mean, it is ridiculous that the Oilers have yet another 1st overall pick, but as we've seen, that alone doesn't win them anything. Most teams get better over time, even without the 1st overall pick.

I can think of a good reason why that isn't the obvious reason (which you made good points against).

Teams that perpetually suck usually have poor management. That's counterproductive to helping young players flourish. So I totally agree with giving underperforming teams better chances at the higher draft picks, but if they perpetually suck and their management/coaching isn't getting it done then no amount of top picks is going to change that. Meanwhile, it increases the likelihood of those highly talented players never developing to the best of their ability because of that poor environment provided by the management. Which sucks for those players, but also for the NHL as a whole.

So I don't feel strongly about it but if there were a vote that teams shouldn't be able to get the top picks over and over I'd vote for it.
