I'd be interested to see how the prospect experts on this board fare in the draft. Should appoint a GM and a few Lieutenants and go live with the real draft. I bet you guys would do well.
We have a lot of armchair GMs that are doing something besides the NHL for a living. There is a reason for that.

That said, this board has A LOT of knowledgeable posters.

The reason for it is not that people aren’t qualified. It’s that being a professional scout is a really bad job, with terrible hours, tons of travel, and not very high paid.

31 thoughts: 31 Thoughts: Intrigue around NHL Draft starting to take shape - Sportsnet.ca

A few teams I spoke with believe WHL Vancouver defenceman Bowen Byram and U.S. National Team Development Program centre Alex Turcotte are separating themselves at three and four, although Sam thinks one of Turcotte’s teammates — centre Trevor Zegras — is in that group. Sixth on his list is WHL Lethbridge centre Dylan Cozens.

Back to Podkolzin. New Jersey and the Rangers aren’t going there. The suspicion is the Blackhawks won’t either, since they are determined to regain peak relevance now. The biggest question about Chicago is whether or not they take Byram, since they have selected three defencemen in the first round and another in the second during the past two drafts. (I’d take the best player available and sort it out, but I’m not in charge — luckily for them.)

That brings us to Colorado. The Avalanche are stocked with good, young players. This is a rising team that will get votes as a Stanley Cup contender in 2018-19. It can afford to be patient. Now, some teams are more careful about drafting Russian players with options. Mikhail Grigorenko didn’t work out with the Avalanche, and they have to sort out Nikita Zadorov’s future. There are differing opinions on whether or not Colorado would do it, but there’s no doubt they are in a great position to take the gamble.

At five is Los Angeles, and, like the Blackhawks, are pushing to regain the mystique. It would be a surprise. Then comes Detroit.

No GM is more secure than Steve Yzerman, returning to the scene of his greatest triumphs. Even before his announcement, there was a belief the Red Wings liked Podkolzin’s game. The organization has a great history with Russian players, and Yzerman had success with drafting them in Tampa Bay. They won’t be afraid, if he’s the No. 1 guy on their list.

I think the most interesting guys to me out of those likely to be around at 20 are:

Bobby Brink: He is not big or fast, but I don't think you have to be big or fast to be a successful top 6 forward in the NHL. We watched Zucc produce without size or speed for years and the best player in the NHL this year (Kucherov) was an undersized guy who basically never beats his opponent with speed. Brink's got basically everything else you could want - great hands, hockey sense, passing ability, a shot that he can get off quickly and accurately or can beat goalies from a distance with, edgework that he can use to create space, and a high compete level and ability to win loose pucks. He's one of the youngest players in the draft and seems to be on a steep development curve, coming out of nowhere this year. Statistically, his USHL stats are great and I believe I've read that his possession stats are too. His team's production dropped off significantly when he was out. He didn't seem out of place next to Boldy, Zegras, etc, at U18's and those guys are considered top 10 picks.

Moritz Seider: He's a good enough player to get picked 20th (or higher based on his IIHF performance so far) as is, but what's really interesting to me about Seider is that he's spent his whole career in an environment that doesn't really produce many good hockey players and he's the best defenseman they've ever produced. So what happens to his development when he gets put into a more competitive environment that's better at producing NHL players? He has a great physical toolset that shouldn't limit his upside and if his development accelerates in more competitive environment he could turn into a steal at 20.

Ryan Suzuki: He produced at basically the same rate as Cozens and Dach this year, but he did it at a younger age on a worse team. It seems to me like he skates, passes, and shoots just as well as they do and better in some cases. He increased his ppg 75% over last year. If he were the same size as Cozens and Dach, I don't see why he wouldn't be considered in the same prospect tier as them and I think size is overrated.

Nick Robertson: Similar to Suzuki, but younger, smaller, and with worse production. He's 4 days from being in next year's draft. Whereas there are questions about Suzuki's willingness to play inside though, Robertson is borderline reckless. Personally, I prefer the younger guy with better work ethic, even if he's smaller and hasn't produced as well yet.

We really, really need a RHS Winger. If we get a RHS C that's fine too but we really need more RHS besides Zibanajed.

I’ve got my eyes on a few for 2020. Alexander Holtz, Lucas Raymond, and Noel Gunler.

At 20, I’d be interested in Philip Tomasino or Raphael Lavoie.

So.... Rangers will not go Podkolzin at No. 2!!

TSN saying its a "lock" that Hughes goes to the Devils #1 overall... uh... i just dont see it being that clear cut. Wondering where they are getting that info from.

I have to tell you, I really don't think there's much, if any debate among scouts or execs.

The reality is that HFBoards, and especially our board, really is the exception to broader worldview. And not by a small margin mind you.

In this case, our board is the outlier.

People tend to forget that Jack has ties to Hall and Shero outside of hockey. That and that the Devils need center depth. Talent wise, they could both be selected 1st overall, but there are many factors that go into a selection than just on the ice....

Yes it would be. The mock was posted a few pages back, but bringing home a haul of Kakko and York would be absolutely brilliant drafting by NYR!!

I don't think anyone would be dissapointed there.

Here's a question...You are on the clock with #20. Still on the board are. Who's your pick?

Lavoie
Suzuki
Seider
York
Dorofyev

I think for one, all of us Rangers fans are hyping ourselves up for Kakko and really excited that he has played well at the WC's. Then we start thinking "he's totally the best player in the draft, why WOULDN'T NJ pick him first?"

After being convinced we'd be drafting Kakko and finding ways to make him out to be better than Hughes in our head, we've convinced ourselves that everyone else in the hockey world has the same opinion.
