Gonna be a lot harder now.

Yes and no.

It’s always been about getting a pick close enough to move up. That wasn’t happening with 28.

But the hypothetical cost to move from say, the 14th pick, just went from two picks to three most likely. And the residual of that factor is the Rangers probably aren’t making that move and moving up from the Jets pick.

We don't need quantity anymore. We have enough depth in the pool. Getting Kakko and another top 15 or so prospect is more ideal than Kakko, 19/20, and a bunch of lesser prospects.

And that’s why people are bummed about the Dallas pick. Getting said top 15 pick is going to come with a price.

Sure, and I totally get that. Will be upset for a bit, but anything outside Kakko became gravy for me, personally. I know that's the wrong attitude to have, but I'm not greedy. :P

Eh, it’s one approach to have. But the difference between a first and a second is pretty big. Not gonna lie or sugarcoat that.

Certainly, no doubt about that. I take solace in that we really put ourselves in a great position this off-season and moving forward with Kakko, the WPG 1st, and the 2 2nds (possibility of 2020 DAL 1st as well). I think we have a lot more to be grateful and excited about than upset. Totally get the disappointment though.

I'm not saying I think the Rangers are going to move Staal to the AHL. I think he stays up. They are willing to bury Smith's contract in the AHL. They've already done it. It's not fantasy land. Why are you calling it fantasy land? There is no reason to buy either Staal or Smith out this season.

Rykov is a year further along in his development than Lindgren, had a more impressive 2018-2019 season, is just just as solid defensively, and is more of a contributor offensively.

I have a better chance of playing in the AHL than Staal this year. You need vets around, he's been here forever, they aren't going with 6 defenseman with 2 or less years, 3 of which are rookies nor should they. No way on earth he's sent down unless he shows up to camp weighing 345 pounds. We all know it's a bad deal and he's overpaid... he's here for two more years and he's probably wearing a letter.

How many times do I have to say I think Staal should have an NHL roster spot? What argument are you trying to make here? It’s pretty obvious he would stay on the roster over someone like Smith.

This whole back and forth started with what “I’d like to see” and then you started telling me I’m off in fantasy land by wanting to see young developing players over vets anchoring the league’s worst defense.

I’m only saying that I believe Rykov’s development > Staal’s veteran presence on the ice. From what I’ve seen, he’s as ready as Hajek and more ready than Lindgren. Eventually those players will play over Staal, as soon as later this season. That isn’t fantasy land, it’s what should happen and what I think many on this thread seem a possibility.

Veterans: Lundqvist, Zibanejad, Fast, Skjei, Strome, Namestnikov, Kreider/Panarin... what’s your minimum quota on veteran presence?

so which picks do we currently have in the first 2 rounds now? 2, 20/21, 48, 58?
I guess my revised list is Hughes/Kakko, Newhook/York/Seider/Suzuki, Dorofeyev (yeah, if he's still around), not sure at 58 but always BPA.

I didn't say you were in Fantasy Land ... that was someone else... I just disagreed in response to Staal.

I also disagree on wanting to fill out a complete defense with rookies on day 1. Hajek played what 5 NHL games? Rykov? We don't know if he's coming to the US and if he does how he'd look or how much time he'd need. Lindgren? No idea. None of these guys have blown the tires off the AHL, but that was admittedly a lousy team. Hopefully these guys win spots and develop. I just don't think it's realistic from day 1, and Shatty/Staal will play, and I'm sure you'll see some Smith as well drizzled over.

My quota? No big new contracts... maybe 3 vet d-man... could always trade or sit someone. A handful of vet forwards sprinkled in to intersperse with kids? I think that's prob close to the recipe for developing these kids.

Puh, I think we dodged a bullet with Dallas loss last night. You never know if they would be willing to give up 2 firsts for Zucc (likely? who knows), but with their loss last night it seems more likely that they will resign him.

And its the unprotected 2020 1st that can have a real impact for us. Dallas finished 15th overall last season. Looking back at all seasons after the lockout, teams finishing 15 overall one season was in lottery pick territory no less than 46% of the time the following season, and bottom 5 no less han 23% of the time. The historic data has teams in the 12-18 range being just as likely to miss the POs after finishing in that range as they are to make the POs.

The data:

Bummer on losing out on the late first from dallas.i do think it strengthens the odds of them resigning Zuc and rather have next years 1
