Lindgren, Rykov and Hajek project to be those types of guys
Was thinking Lindgren minus the size. (6 ft vs 6'3") Hajek surely has the potential and hope he gets a full year next year to show what he has.

People have been sleeping on Lindgren and Hajek for slow starts in Hartford, but the eye test still looks like two very likely to be eventual NHL defenders to me.

Obviously Rykov's situation staying in Russia is a little more concerning.
Is it such a bad thing? I don't see where he would have been able to get ice time with the big club.
Let him play another year in the KHL getting serious ice time albeit I must be honest I don't know his contract situation.

I’d rather give Rykov an NHL spot that than let Staal and Smith play another minute.

I think we should roll this:

Skjei - DeAngelo
Hajek - Fox
Rykov - Shattenkirk
Staal/Smith - Pionk

Smith/Staal (buried)

Why not?

Because Staal is not going to get "buried". What does that mean, anyway? If "buried", there are still charges against the cap.

Rykov also isn't coming over this year. Lindgren is already here.

For at least one I don't see Staal going anywhere. It just is what it is. Just happy to see by 2020-2021 and beyond we should have a decent d again.

We should trade up for Alex Newhook instead.

No, we should draft Moritz and then use an earlier pick in a better draft next year to take a significantly better forward than Newhook.

I’d really like to see Rykov here in 2019-20 but you have to run out the clock on Staal, Smith and Shatty. Still have Girardi’s buyout in practically perpetuity.

By buried, I mean take the full cap hit, but use the roster spot for someone who can develop and is NHL ready, whether that be Lindgren or Rykov.

Rykov is a better and more NHL-ready prospect than Lindgren in my opinion.

Wheeler (The Athletic)posted his new top 100 for 2019. Some interesting rankings for sure...

If Podkolzin falls into the late Teens Gordie has to pounce on that.

1) Hughes C
2) Kakko RW
3) Turcotte C
4) Cozens C
5) Byram LHD
6) Krebs C/LW
7) Boldy RW/LW

13) Kayilev LW
14) Brink RW
15) Dorofeyev RW/LW
16) Suzuki C
17) Podkolzin RW <-- Jiminy Kreegans!!!! That is a crazy fall.
18) Hoglander LW
19) Broberg LHD
20) Honka RHD
21) Heinola LHD
22) Puistola LW
23) Kokkonen LHD
24) Lavoie LW/C
25) Pelletier LW
26) Cajkovic RW
27) Legare RW
28) Soderstrom RHD

37) Afanasyev- LW
38) Thrun- LHD
39) Thompson RHD
40) Grewe C/RW <--Power forwards tend to develop late. Ones that can skate have added value. Worth the risk IMO.
41) M Robertson LHD <-- Was top 15 for much of the season on alot of rankings. At 6'4" he's not going to fall to 41.
42) Fagemo LW/RW

45) Knight G
46) McMichael C/RW
47) Spence RHD

50) Pinto RW

Power forwards are the highest risk when adjusted by position. Size is the easiest thing to understand so lazy or stupid scouts can prioritize it. Hockey sense is the hardest to understand so only the best scouts ID it, which is why when we took Stepan in the second, this board exploded: "Who?! F'ing tap dancer?"

Big guys always get ranked a bunch of spots above where they belong, excluding guys you see at the very top (first 2-3 picks). I wouldn't draft monsters unless we are absolutely certain of them.

Size, speed, skill and mean streak are tough to find. His floor is to be a fantastic third line center and the potential is there for a very solid two-way 2nd line center who is hell to play against.

Hugh Jessiman?

I would love to draft Moritz if he's bpa at that spot, would hate to draft him purely on our need. There are like 2-3 righty D with size in the top 60, what are the odds they'll net NHL players? Yes, we'll get a better forward next year with the early pick, but I'd happily still grab another forward if a special player is available with the later 1st we have. This is not a strong righty D draft if you're looking for a matchup D with size.

If we pick Seider with the Jets or the Dallas(knock on Sherwood) pick, does he go to Owen Sound or Hartford?

That's a good question. He's played against men in the DEL and last I knew that league was pretty rough. I think I'd make that decision in training camp but I'd lean towards Hartford. The OHL would probably be a step down for him.

Who are the other right d with size?

Is Rykov even coming over this year?

Seider, Korczak, Helleson, Moberg, Case McCarthy, Ryan Siedem to name a few if we're talking about guys with size. Really only the first two guys mentioned are projected to go in the first two rounds. On the other hand there a quite a few intriguing lefty D that will be available throughout, as well as a few more right shot puck moving D who happen to be more in the mould of Fox or Pionk in terms of size. There are also some intriguing righty shot forwards as well, so would hate for them to target a specific need with the Wpg pick or the seconds. Go bpa above need.
