Bjornfot is highly underrated. I wouldn't mind reaching on him early if I were NYR!!
I guess problem with losing our second rounder and if get Dallas first will be there at 58ish? Doubt it. Would you use a 28/30 pick on him?

Harley has been rising for over a month now.
Do we have any interest in a guy like Suzuki in the first round? He seems to be showing up top 15ish in a lot of mocks
I like Suzuki, but I don’t love him in the mid-teens, if we don’t move up with Winnipeg’s pick I’d be fine (but not necessarily excited) with taking him there

I ran the numbers last year. GMs talk of wanting a 10-year player. That would be 750+ career games.

The average draft produces 16-17 such players. The legendary 2003 draft produced I believe 23 such players, but all other drafts are under 20. This includes non-impact long term NHLers such as our own Dominic Moore, among several other non-impact long term NHLers we drafted.

The number of impact players in the whole draft is around 10. Which is why it is laughable to suggest "whoever we get in the top 10 will be a good player." Yeah... no.

That number wont increase. For one, the number of spots is the same as before, plus Vegas. But two, because of the cap, there's more need for young, cost-controlled players, so old guys dont last as long. In the 90s we had teams tha averaged 32 years old. Today, very few teams have many non-stars who are over 32.

Realistically, there are 10 long term impact players per draft, give or take 2-3

Great stuff.

And this is why you to a large extent also must go BPA in a draft, if you get the player, great. There aren’t many of them available. Can’t be too chosey.

With that said, there are a bit more ‘players’ than the 750+ guys, like the Kevin Klein types, takes a little longer to establish themselves and get out a little earlier, but those 6-9 years can still be valuable. But it’s not 60 either.

With obvious names potentially falling, I think there’s good merit to also put Bjornfot with the Winnipeg pick. He’s excellent at all sides of the ice. Very underrated, IMO, and wouldn’t mind the “reach”!!

Yeah someone is getting a good player that picks him. There are maybe a bit too many guys like him available for my liking, but I don’t know how sound that thinking is.

I know that everyone around Team Sweden at the U18s really liked him, great leader and a very solid player too that isn’t without top skill.

Have we often seen situations were a team ‘trades down’ — after having made a pick already? With the driving force behind it being that a kid they liked dropped further than they expected. I have some recollection of it, but can’t remember the details.

19 or even 18 don’t seem impossible with Winnipeg’s pick. I think there are some teams with a bit higher pick who might be considering Zach Knight, but they can’t be sure that he will be there at 18. I think some of those teams could see some value in trading a pick in say the 8-12 range for Zach Knight and Dallas 1st if we get it. But it might not be that attractive if someone else snags Knight just before their pick so making that trade before their selection might be a bit risky. So maybe they go ahead and drafts whomever they like with their own pick, but then a trade can be made if Knight is still on the table at 18 and we like who they picked.

We should have interest in Ryan Suzuki with the Wpg pick, we could use a shifty playmaker like him.

Yea I'm not sure newhook is that much better than Suzuki
I'd rather get seider and Suzuki than just newhook assuming we'd have to trade the wpg and Dallas picks to move up to get him

looks like mo seider is on team germany for the world championships...not sure if anyone else (besides hughes & kakko) from the draft will be playing

Pass first offensive threat with an underrated shot. He'd be a good get as a potential faller!!

I doubt he makes it past pick No. 25. If he falls that far and we have Dallas's pick, absolutely!! Depending on who's available, I'd seriously consider him at Winnipeg's pick!!

As exciting as Newhook has been of late I think the wiser option would be the package, too. I'm still not entirely sold on Newhook. I'm rooting for him to have a great development, but it's tough to trade up for a potential boom/bust player when two safe bets at their potentials are around at those picks. The draft is always unpredictable, though.

With that said, I can also see NYR trading up with their assets because of how quickly they captured one of the best prospect pools in the league. They really have nothing to lose. I trust in Gordie, mainly Bobrov and Co. to get at it!!

I’m not going to lie, Harley has me the most uneasy out of some of the top defensive prospects.

All of them have things they need to work on, some more than others. But the wholes in Harley’s game just see to stand out more when I watch him.

The defensive decisions leave me wanting, and I see a fairly evident aversion to contact or engagement. Factoring in the size as well, and he reminds me a lot of Bobby Sanguinetti in his draft year. Sanguinetti might be the only post 2005 Rangers first round pick who I wasn’t crazy about before he was ours.

I was super impressed by Harleys positioning and anticipation at the U18s (saw two games of him live), he read the play really well defensively.

I was just thinking about that, but saw it was a long shot given that he hasn’t dressed up for them before. But that is great news, makes an interesting tournament even more interesting.

Kakko, Hughes and Seider are the only 2001-born players on the announced rosters at the moment. Of the 2000-born players, Janis Moser and Benjamin Baumgartner are 2nd year draft eligibles
