At what point does Podkolzin's struggle to outshine his peers start to really raise a concern for more people?

It's not just one isolated viewing, it's multiple leagues, multiple showcases, etc.

At some point, regardless of talent, you have to question why the sum doesn't equal the parts.

At the same time, for the U18 team he has been a total force. Not scoring in these tournaments is certainly a first for him. I saw him against the Slovaks, could easily have had a couple of pts, or even 3-4.

With that said -- I definitely think the concerns around vPod is mounting. But -- IMHO -- those concerns should be seen against the background of his contract situation. If you put vPod next to Turcotte, next to Zegras, next to Cozens, next to Boldy and so forth -- his situation in SKA is a negative, hands down. So he got to over-win that.

I think those guys in McK's polls unanimously have had vPod at 3 because he clearly is one of the most talented kids in this draft. That has of course not changed. But if you add a little production concern, him getting frustrated when the pucks wasn't going in etc to a very unclear situation going forward (where will he play next season, SKA? Hardly, VHL/MHL? Loaned to another KHL team? Will that work out?), I wouldn't at all be surprised if he started falling.

And as we have seen before, when a player starts to fall you never know when its going to stop. If he starts to fall I would definitely be interested in trading up for him. Its not like he is a carbon copy, but he does reminds me some of a younger Radulov.

I agree with this. I'd be a lot more gung ho about potentially trading for Soderstrom if Lundkvist wasn't already in the system. Very similar players, IMO.

Unfortunately, I think the odds of Nils busting is a lot bigger than him making it. The X-factor is his physical development.

Lundkvist will become a good hockey-player, no doubt. But to get into the NHL he must be able to separate himself from very stiff competition, and the crucial point for him will come when he is 23-24 years of age, at the latest, i.e. well before D's normally reach their prime. Why 23-24? 2-3 years in the SHL after his draft, then 2-3 years in the AHL. By that time he will only get into the league if he is better than the competition, including not only kids but also the average journeymen who will have had a handful of years more on him to hone his skill. What would change my perception is if he grows a great deal physically and just becomes a lot more explosive in his skating and all over.

But right now I just see a kid who will be solid overall and fairly good offensively at the highest level outside the NHL. I know some of you will blow a fuse when you see me go on and on about size and what not, but I just call it like I see it, and as a 5'11 D it usually takes more than that.

I think Lundkvist will have a prominent and good U20 WJC next season. Boqvist can still make it, but Nils should be one of the core guys. Probably the No 1 RD 5 on 5 even if Boqvist makes it, and if not, the should be the clear No 1 D given his experience.

Given the depth we have at RD with TDA, Pionk, Fox that is rumored to come in, Keane and so forth, all more or less 5'11-6'0 "1-way" PMDs, Nils Lundkvist's name is certainly not one I would put on a list of untouchables in trade talks if I was Gorton. I would look to trade him before the draft next season, let him have a big role in the WJCs for a good team there, get a lot of exposure, grown into the SHL more, he should have decent 1st round pick value.

end round 1, would it really be a "reach" for such an all around solid dman like tobias bjornfot ??

kid just seems to have something. every time i iso watch him, he makes the right reads, the little subtle plays and is always pushing the puck up ice with purpose.

i like that kid.

Yeah he is legit. And that is one of the big strength's of this draft. The defenders who still will be on the table in the later 20s and at least the whole first half of the 2nd round, pushing the usual high 2nd round D picks into the late 2nd and 3rd round.

Just curious as to people's thoughts on this:

At 37, do you take Tobias Bjornfot or Lassi Thomson if you HAVE to take one or the other?

Bjornfot.

Thomson is a guy I consider in the second, but not over Bjornfot --- who I've had hovering around the end of the first for a good chunk of the season.

We could legit at very least have a 2nd overall and the 20/21st overall. Very exciting. If Dallas can win one more round how does 2,20, 28 sound? Damn

I'm excited we have 4 in the top 50, and 5 total in the top 60.

10 Picks total draft.

Those are significant numbers with 2 oa being the cherry on top.

Georgiev is still Russian despite being born in Bulgaria

Ragnarsson is Swedish despite being born in the US

Place of birth doesn't always determine nationality

If Vegas wins tonight, does it go down to 18-20?
All you have to worry about is teams that finished below Winnipeg making the Conference Finals. 4 spots.

So yes, Vegas would play Colorado in the 2nd round. They both finished below Winnipeg, that guarantees 1 spot.

The only teams left that finished above Winnipeg are SJ, WSH, TOR/BOS, NYI.
