i find i comical that peeps here criticize cam fowler at all given we drafted mcilrath at 10 that yr

say what you want about him being soft and what not, but his career speaks for itself.

hes an nhl allstar and has played 620 nhl games

mcilrath not so much
I guess since our favorite team took a player who didn’t pan out once we can’t have opinions on another teams player :dunno:

man remember Brandon Gormley? He became as big a bust as He Who Should Not Be Named. Even worse, actually, because he actually was drafted where he was expected to and projected to be a good d-man. The Coyotes have just had garbage luck with the draft.
It wasn’t bad luck on the Coyotes part. It was poor preparation. They had no idea Gormerly would drop that far in the draft and weren’t fully versed on him. Don Maloney was calling around during the draft trying to get information on the player. They let newspapers and blogs do their scouting that year.

Sounds like the Islanders scouting method

That would be great. Pushes other positions of need down further to us.
Thing is, if he's anywhere near as good as he's reported to be, he deserves to go there. I'm not a fan of drafting goalies before the fourth round – but he absolutely has the chops to go top 20, or even top 10. I'd be shocked if a goaltending-challenged team didn't take him before the WPG pick.

Can anyone see a scenario where the Rangers land Podkolzin?
Podkolzin slipping to Buffalo or Edmonton and Kreider and 22OA (or some other combination of picks) going the other way?

Edmonton taking Knight at 8 would be peak Oilers

Hoping for that

It wouldn't be the wisest move at 8, but he could be a stud. They could probably trade back a few spots in return for a forward, and then draft him in that 12-14 range. It wouldn't be the worst idea in the world if they think he's that good.

Have heard from multiple sources that if Spencer Knight is available at #14 (and the Coyotes still own the pick) he will likely go there.

What do you think the odds are Arizona makes the selection at 14 instead of trading it for immediate help?

50-50.

Coyotes need scoring and can’t afford a big free agent contract. They are going to have to trade for scoring. That leads me to believe #14 and some of their other young assets are in play. Their payroll is already at the same amount as they spent last year. I don’t think that trading for a guy like Vesey solves their problems.

Thanks for the insight. Kreider at 50% sounds pretty appealing...

There was a Coyotes article in The Athletic yesterday that mentioned the team trading for scoring but only talked about the Maple Leafs as trade partners. Suggested Coyotes could take Marleau’s contract since he isn’t owed much cash next year. Of course, no indication whether he would want to come here.

There’s already some rumors about Kessel being available and him being willing to go to Arizona

Not sure how much the Rangers like Podkolzin and all I've heard is that if they gave up all that it would have to be for a potential top center prospect.

With the play of Boldy, Caufield, Broberg, Soderstrom, I am thinking it really pushes Newhook down, if the Rangers end up with the 14th I feel pretty confident he'd be there and wouldnt mind him at all. His skating is outstanding, to add that to the bull Kakko is and I wouldnt even be worrying about day 2

He might not have to go there. If they "Orpik him" it could be a purely paper transaction. Trade Marleau to Arizona who then buys him out and he re-signs a 1 year deal with Toronto for a low number. Arizona has a $6.2M cap hit on their books this year for the cost of $415k this year and again next year.

There could be a bit of a chest match concerning Knight. Do you want for him to fall? He's hyped up, but taking a goalie early isn't vogue. If you miss him, the talent at goalie isn't a s clear.

Florida has been linked, but the Knight timeline probably doesn't work with a Bobrovsky contract. I think Vancouver could use him.

It could all just play out where teams just take the player that falls to them. Or there could conceivably be teams that trade back to take Knight later while getting an additional asset. Or a team may trade up into the teens to fill that hole.

I think this kid is an absolute franchise goalie. Would love to get him we can’t afford to take him early but man whoever gets him is getting a Carey Price version 2.0
