The one thing that keeps coming into this as a potential monkey wrench for me is Florida. They have Hoffman as a near equivalent to kreider. If Edmonton, Anaheim or Vancouver want a wing, 1 year from UFA, costing about $5m, and for the price of flipping 1sts... why are we winning that bid?

We do have the ability to take back cap, so that's a plus for Edmonton and Anaheim. Hoffman had/has the Ottawa drama. Is it enough to drop another 6 spots?

I think you hit the nail on the head, the ability to retain is there, as is the ability to take back cap. I also think the Hoffman backstory could be a factor, all things being somewhat equal.

At the end of the day, even if Hoffman went to one or the other, that means someone still has the need. So Hoffman going to one doesn’t necessarily quell the desire for the other team.

In Edmonton’s case, there might also be the intrigue of how insanely fast a forward lineup with both McDavid and Kreider could be.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Newhook slid to the 2nd round, despite having a great playoffs....

Now that I would find shocking.

The 20s I can see. But the 30s? I think that would be a travesty.

Hell, I don’t care if we take Zegras or Turcotte in the top 10 somehow, if Newhook is sitting there as the second starts, I’m picking up the phone again and seeing what we might be able to do.

I think Florida is a pretty interesting trade partner for us actually. Supposedly looking for a blue liner (though there are rumors about Trouba but I have no idea how they make that work financially) and they are rumored to want to dump Reimer in the event that Bob signs there. They also have some interesting prospects in their system like Heponiemi who could probably challenge for a spot in the NHL next fall but the Panthers really have no room.

The problem with taking back Reimer is his contract has a signing bonus in the final year, so the buyout cap hit in 20-21 is $3.2M. Though I wouldn't really expect that to be much of an issue for a rebuilding team like the Rangers.

If we don't go and spend all our money on the Panarins and EKs of the world this summer we should definitely look to take on some salary dumps for the next season or two...for the right return.

IMO, he should go in the late 1st, but I'm just looking through past drafts and haven't seen a player out of the BCHL drafted in the 1st round since Fabbro in 2016. I don't think it's so far fetched. Newhook has lacked a physical prowess and mediocre performances defensively. The offense is there, but it's in a league much more known for offensive prowess. Not sure how he'll be in the NCAA.

Like I said, that’s fine by me.

Gimme Kakko at 2, Zegras at 8 and Newhook in the 30s.

Please and thank you.

Arizona is unquestionably the team to watch. They need scoring and do not have as much money to throw around as you might think. The Coyotes had a $65MM budget this year but have several big contracts kicking in next year. Right now, they have about $66MM committed to 16 roster players for 2019-20. Kreider is probably their best chance to add a scorer at a price they can digest. Good chance they will want to move a veteran defenseman (Goligoski/Demers/Hjalmarsson) either as part of a deal with the Rangers or someone else to create some cap room. I don’t know what they are paying on Hossa’s deal but that also might figure in here. #14 and a young player (they have a few of interest) has me listening. I’d also take Hjalmarsson because he played well this year because he could be flipped down the line.
