I actually would have taken Wahlstrom, Zadina or Dobson, my three favs in the draft. You bring up good points, I just don't see JK being more than a 2C, at best. And I do wonder how much he was insulated with his father coaching him...

Not sure why we drafted the Russian kid so high, we missed some much bigger names in that slot, that was a kick in the teeth as well.

Hahahhaa. You are only allowed to pick one!

I think there is a good chance one of those 3 ends up better, but I would also bet that K-nemi is better than at least one of them.

Russian kid is a mystery, was supposed to go a little later, but if you look around the draft there was a ton or risers going much higher. Dellandrea at 13, Hayton at 5, O'Brien top 20 etc... so I'm not sure that it was that shocking. They must really like him.

Well I would have went with Wahlstrom I guess.

Ok let's check back in 5 years!! haha! Yeah I like Wahlstrom a lot, but I had Knemi ahead of him. After watching the U18's I went away believing in him more than Wally. Of course Wally's last shot of the tournament was so brutal...

Yup, I'm preparing for my disappointment lol, but lets hope for the best.

Watched some U-18 games last night, saw Canada vs Sweden. Liked what I saw from Olofsson though watching it made me wish we had Boqvist. He set up a goal and looked good on draws, played a safe smart game, good frame, skating.

For Canada I liked how Hillis played but holy cow is he small, he played a chippy game and went to the net hard, but for his size I think he needs to get quicker. Not Byron speed but quicker would help. McShane impressed me although it felt like if he was more involved physically in the game he would be much more impressive. Looks to have some nice hands. Fonstad had some troubles with the bigger/stronger Swedish players but worked hard and got his nose dirty.

Then I watched some of the Finland vs Sweden game. I only saw a clip or two of Kotkaniemi before the draft, don't know where they were from but when I watched the first thing I thought was what the f*** was that skating? His skating looked bad but also odd. When I watched the U-18 game he looked night and day. He looked slimmer, his skating and mobility looked much better although still looks like it needs work. I said at the time I trust Timmins when he picks in the top 10 and I was impressed with his frame, his lower body strength (though it was against same age or younger), he had no trouble protecting the puck. Was consistently around the net, just wish I could have seen his shot which I hear so much about. Will see more of him over the summer and as much as I can next season.

as with most endeavours, waiting to the last minute limits your options significantly...

more broadly, 7 off-seasons, zero 1st round picks added.... "trades are hard", "finding #1C's is hard via trade", "build via the draft".

at this point, it's patently unfair to suggest that the rampant criticism of MB is unfounded, or that people will complain "no matter what he does".... the issue has and continues to be that he does a very poor job of managing the team, thus the missteps and squandered opportunities are plentiful, and he gets roasted as a result.

To have two lottery season in three years, and have acquired zero extra first round picks in the process, is a significant failure of managing the team

Next year is even more crucial as the draft seems to be deeper than this year.

It is paramount we get another 1st for 2019 as it is obvious our chances to compete next year aren't looking good.

Statistically, where we selected these players and given some good development, especially by Poehling, the odds are excellent that we will have one top 6C, and probably 50/50 or so that there will be another top 6C out of that bunch.

So the Cupboard for Cs has never been better in decades, but 75% of those players are outside the 2nd round, and the chances of them being a 2C are remote, as in 1 in 50 or so each.

This is what a lot of us were saying. He improved leaps just from the last U18 to this one in April.

Historically skating seems a hard area to improve on so it's usually a big deal for me. But yes, he actually did improve it and works on it daily I read.

He picks it up another notch in terms of his first few strides , coupled with what I think is real high IQ, puck handling and a decent shot, then we could have a real player here. IF.

I know, spilled milk n' all but it annoys me we were apparently very high on Berggren (Timmins brought him up in interviews without being asked and there's reports from Detroit we were aiming for him) but didn't use some of those dozen 2nds and 4ths to move up a few a spots.

I mean that's what they were pretty much there for, to make sure we get the guys we really want. And it's not like we'd need to give up multiple 2nds to move up 10+ spots, he was right there. Imagine coming out of the 2nd with Berggren, Ylonen, Morozov/Hillis. Gah

Isnt Laf a winger? Thats what he played this year
nah nah. Imagine drafting Hughes AND Lafreniere!!
We can ice a team of:
Lafreniere - Hughes - Drouin
Domi - Kotkaniemi - Ylonen/Scherback
Lehkonen - Poehling - Gallagher/Scherback

A man can dream!

How the Habs will line them up.

Hughes - Drouin - Scherbak
Kotkaniemi - Domi - Ylonen
Poehling - Danault - Lehkonen

Lafreniere - Weber
Mete - Petry
Romanov - Brook

Interesting draft. Let’s see how they look in 6 months and then 12 months time. Lots of darts thrown at high ceiling type players and that’s what most of us wanted.

Benning said that he had the same top 7 as the actual draft, but in different rankings. Pretty shocking that Jim Benning who has built quit the pipeline in Vancouver had a 6th round ranked prospect Kotkaniemi in the top 7.
