Lol, holy **** is r/habs ever hilarious. People upset about our 2nd round picks...

''Yeah, I feel like those second round picks could have been used to greater effect. Either moving up for Veleno or Beaudin or taking a chance on someone like Wilde, McIsaac or McLeod.
The picks we got were decent, but it would have been nice to grab some high end talent.''

edit: on trading down from 3 to pick a centerman.

''****. Didn't think of it that way. Maybe entering reach for Veleno territory?''

That EXACT post about Veleno and McLeod made me SMH also.

He probably can't trade Pacioretty because Madam Beliveau really likes the guy. That or he has no value whatsoever. Give the guy a break.

How is he waiting to the last minute? 2 2nds doesn't get you where Smith went, and we should be wasting our picks because our pool was pretty bad before the draft. I don't even like Bergevin, but there wasn't anything he could do for another 1st unless it's a later one or just not worth it.
.

Not hard to step back & see that trading into the first round happens regularly, and that we've had many opportunities over the years to do so.

Yes. Trading happens.

This is what has annoyed me over the years with BPA. Theory being that you pick the best and then if you are weak in a given position you will be able to trade for a guy to fill it from where you are deep.

Reality is different. Top 6Cs do not get traded that much, and just a guy here and there becomes a UFA. So the one way to have control over getting top 6 Cs is to draft and develop.

Unfortunately for us, except for these last couple of drafts, top 6C potential prospects were never BPA at our spot. I mean not just year after tear, but like decade after decade almost.

Ridiculous. Trade up , so whatever and make darn sure you have top prospects especially for your most important positions.

Really like our draft. Tremendous value in Oloffson, Hillis, McShane, and Fonstad. Ylonen reminds me a bit of Panarin the way he skates, dangles, and distributes the puck. He also has a wicked shot. His skill is undeniable when you watch him. Romanov was off the board but it seems like NHL scout lists had him much higher than outside source scouts, probably due to limited viewings. Timmins clearly did his homework on this player so hopefully it works out for him.

Overall very pleased with this draft. There are several players that have the potential to really explode in their D+1 season, which will make next year very fun to watch.

Burning a #3 pick on a kid that’s a number 2 centre by most accounts , while passing on zadina ... will come back to haunt this team. I see Dobson and wahlstrom being the other steals 3 years from now , while we still search for a number 1 c, and goals from the wings.

Just don’t care for the player that much , always go BPA in my mind , not for team needs.

OK, that's fair. You would have taken Zadina? He'll almost definitely look like the better pick in the next couple of years... personally I don't mind them taking the C even though he is a bit less polished. If it works out about the same it will be way more valuable than a winger.

For me, I'm just happy that the team added extra picks and still made a bunch of selections. Obviously most won't work out, but the only way to have better chances is to take more picks.

Zadina does look better today but I think it is best to compare Kotkaniemi to Zadina's D-1 year where he was the same age in a men's league. I think Kotkaniemi looks better here.

Granted, a year from now, 10 years from now, it's hard to say with certainty. Let's say Zadina becomes a 35/30 player and Kotkaniemi a 25/40. Like you, I think in this case, the center is better.

Looking at the draft as a pure fan and not an internet scout....this was a good one. There are always guys that you wish could have been pick but there is like 30 other team.
The only thing that I would have like was if not trading up or getting a trade with you 2nd round selection, don't move down.
The pick I like are the 2 Fins.....this could be great in a few years.

My feelings about this draft is I don't know. On paper, on principle it looks great. Having a real good center is great but how he's gonna be in 3 years, I don't know. And the others, great stuff written about them but it's the same poutine written every year about all the picks Timmins got and that include David Fisher, Tinordi, Urquhart, Reway, Colberg, etc.
So wait and see ...but wait 3 years.

Romanov was a reach, we'll see if he's more like Subban or Lernout. I worry that the team, and especially management is in disarray. Sort of like the als where they keep changing things and the team continues to suck, outgoing players look better on new teams, guys coming in look worse. With the als I think they went from a great offensive line to a bad one and it ate the team, changing the good parts and failing to fix the problem. With the habs there were some bad trades but the disaster was moving to a slow non-PM defense. They could trade centers with Pittsburgh now and still suck.

I understand the first pick but I'd have more faith if MB were out of the picture. Ottawa and Phoenix are lost, too, their picks don't excuse not picking Zadina. Most of the Canadian teams are stuck in the old school fight/defend defensively/fit in mold and they do dumb things like trading Subban, Hall, and Hamilton. Toronto seems to have smartened up, and Vancouver had a good draft (thanks to us in part), but a lot of the problem is having uneducated multiply concussed ex-players as the GMs. I don't think MB is trying to fail, he just isn't very bright and he prefers to have guys who are easy to get along with in management and easy to coach on the ice. Easy doesn't win, you have to find ways to make it work with the good players. The habs can't get Jacques Lemaire back, or Gallant for that matter. Maybe Markov and Gallant were the key coaches?

MT had his problems as a coach but he did a good job with a number of the limited upside guys he had. He wasn't so good with the better players but those guys are good anyway, they don't need the help. The current habs don't have the speed or the hockey sense for a complex system.

Look at Morrow, he looked horrible here, individually responsible for a goal or two against per night, but he looked fine once he got away. Not great, but not a disaster. He just couldn't fit on the ice.

The first step is to get some people on D who can play with the puck, nothing will work until that happens. Any prospects coming up will look really bad, as will the goalies.

Like the Cole Fonstad, Allan McShane, Cam Hillis, and Jacob Olofsson picks. Hopefully some of these guys can develop well enough in junior/overseas that they can jump straight into NHL without needing much development (ie Gallagher).

I’m happy. They kept and made the picks which desperately needed to happen. I also think they did alright on picking players although it’s impossible to know. Kotkaniemi may be a stretch at #3 but I’m glad they didn’t try outsmarting other teams. Take the player you want and don’t fool around. We’ll see if we made a big mistake here in the future but right now only thing bugging me is Max Pacioretty still being our property.

Poor choices as usual from a subnormal intelligence. If you're scouting heavily at late 2nd round level where you have several picks, wouldn't you have your eyes on a bunch of guys when the draft got there? Why trade down nine spots 62 to 71 so you can get a 5th to turn into Houde?

I actually would have taken Wahlstrom, Zadina or Dobson, my three favs in the draft. You bring up good points, I just don't see JK being more than a 2C, at best. And I do wonder how much he was insulated with his father coaching him...

Not sure why we drafted the Russian kid so high, we missed some much bigger names in that slot, that was a kick in the teeth as well.

Habs got 3 first rounders in our list... kot, ylonen, olfsson

6 of our top 58... mcshane, hillis, and fonstad we had as 2nd round talent.

7 of the top 93 (romanov)

Thats a damn good.draft according to who we liked on our board.

Also improved their 2019 picks... gaining a 4th and 5th while losing the 7th
