I don't much about the guys we pick, but based what I'm reading here it aounds like a good draft.

Personally, I was hoping we would grab Zadina(arguably the best third best player in the draft) and try to move up to grab Dobso. Especially after he started falling. We're going to be bad for a couple of years. Grab a centre next year. Regardless, I'm not disappointed with Kotkaniemi.

What I'm really looking forward to seeing is how this new draft class develops under Bouchard and Ducharme. Should be onteresting.

I went through the 1st 4 rounds of the Drafts from 2003 to 2008, so 6 years. I was looking for the success rate in picking centres. Basically if a guy was near 50 pts a season I made him a top 6C. Interestingly guys who didn't pan out at centre just didn't pan out. Eberle was listed as a centre but is a winger. One guy was listex as a winger but is a C, David Backes. I took Eberle out and added in Backes.

The results.

1st round : 19/40
2nd round: 8/38
3rd round: 1/43
4th round: 1/38

Statistically, I wouldn't get too excited about all these centres we have taken after the 2nd round. Scouts are too efficient and basically all top 6Cs are gone by the 2nd.

IMHO this draft class compares favourably in the 'sexiness factor' to the 2012 class. I am still shocked at the amount of positive remarks that were being posted on the main board...it was truly Bizarro world worthy. I know that we all hope that the end shines brighter that it did for the 2012 class.

Yes that seems about right. But also the % of any players making it after pick #50ish is very small. Still sometimes those guys turn out great.

Pass the Wheaties!

Only 2 kids over 6 foot and most under that and only one listed.over 190 pounds.

Like the Kotkaniemi pick.

It is. The odds are very long for top players after the 2nd, and especially centres. It probably makes mire sense to shoot for D and wingers after the 2nd, but probably better odds for a top D.

We'll see how it turns out, the Olofsson, Hillis, and McShane picks really made the draft IMO. The first 3 picks addressed need, But I'd say only Ylonen represented good value. Romanov is a wild card and I'm crossing my fingers, but we really missed out on the D run that ended the first round and that hurts. Hopefully Romanov turns into a player, he's the real boom/bust pick that can take this class to the next level.

Let's just start with adding one extra first round pick, pretty sure a large chunk of fans would be pleased to have a GM capable of that...
What did you want Bergevin to do at the draft in order to get another 1st? Because ever since Smith got drafted, nobody was worth trading up for.

Depends on the cost. I was pretty content keeping 4 2nds when the difference between a high 2nd and a low 1st isnt that significant.

Alexeyev, Miller and Lundkvist were good targets. Berggren too. Maybe a combo of picks/roster player ? Dont know to be honest.

I still wouldn't have done it tbh. Ylonen isn't as good as Berggren, but he is a great prospect. If I knew we would have picked Romanov, I would have absolutely wanted to trade up from there. But I still wouldn't have done it because I wouldn't have picked Romanov that high with Tychonick and Addison available.

as with most endeavours, waiting to the last minute limits your options significantly...

more broadly, 7 off-seasons, zero 1st round picks added.... "trades are hard", "finding #1C's is hard via trade", "build via the draft".

at this point, it's patently unfair to suggest that the rampant criticism of MB is unfounded, or that people will complain "no matter what he does".... the issue has and continues to be that he does a very poor job of managing the team, thus the missteps and squandered opportunities are plentiful, and he gets roasted as a result.

To have two lottery season in three years, and have acquired zero extra first round picks in the process, is a significant failure of managing the team

How is he waiting to the last minute? 2 2nds doesn't get you where Smith went, and we should be wasting our picks because our pool was pretty bad before the draft. I don't even like Bergevin, but there wasn't anything he could do for another 1st unless it's a later one or just not worth it.

We could have drafted Dahlin, Svechnikov, Kotkaniemi, Zadina, Dobson, Hughes, Boqvist, Wahlstrom, Smith and Tkachuk and some people would still be unhappy.
I don't think the draft was a slam dunk but since we had so much quantity it's hard to say it wasn't a success.

Going with the trades Bergevin made, if we would have done:

#3: Jesperi Kotkaniemi (C)
#35: Jesse Ylonen (RW)
#38: Jonny Tychonick/Martin Fehervary (LD) instead of Alexander Romanov (LD)
#56: Jacob Olofsson (C)
#66: Cam Hillis (C)
#71: Semyon Der-Arguchintsev (C) instead of Jordan Harris (LD)
#97: Allan McShane (C)
#123: Toni Utonen (LD) instead of Jack Gorniak (LW)
#128: Cole Fonstad (RW)
#133: Danila Zhuravlyov (LD) instead of Samuel Houde (C)

Then I would consider it an A+. But the Gorniak and Houde picks were complete throw-aways while the Harris pick was bad considering SDA was available. Romanov I guess I'll wait to judge since Timmins seems very high on high. Even though Tychonick and Fehervary were on the board.

In the end it was a success since we got a lot of future players but it could have been executed a bit better. B for me.

I like it. The chl hasn’t been producing as well lately but we kept drafting Canadians, it looks like we got on a trend before it was too late for once. Pick what’s good and there, not just scout one region and say we did our work.

Explain...
Burning a #3 pick on a kid that’s a number 2 centre by most accounts , while passing on zadina ... will come back to haunt this team. I see Dobson and wahlstrom being the other steals 3 years from now , while we still search for a number 1 c, and goals from the wings.

Just don’t care for the player that much , always go BPA in my mind , not for team needs.

Lol, holy f*** is r/habs ever hilarious. People upset about our 2nd round picks...

''Yeah, I feel like those second round picks could have been used to greater effect. Either moving up for Veleno or Beaudin or taking a chance on someone like Wilde, McIsaac or McLeod.
The picks we got were decent, but it would have been nice to grab some high end talent.''

edit: on trading down from 3 to pick a centerman.

''Shit. Didn't think of it that way. Maybe entering reach for Veleno territory?''
