I get the feeling he is there for the same role his brother is in Nashville.
Yes, just he's not as good a player relative to the league as his brother is. Sounds like the whole thing was arranged long before July 1st with both of them, but maybe they originally saw Cal's role more like Borowiecki's new one. Then maybe they have been a little bit surprised by some players turning down their Milwaukee offers, so they realized, hey, we can actually just have him on a player deal instead, same difference? :dunno:

I remember fondly a practice where Cal had an open net on a feed on a 2 on 1 and passed it back across the top of the crease to where it came from for a goal.

Coach Horachek was running the drill, blew his whistle and just laid into O’Reilly with F bombs imploring him to “pass the puck to the back of the net, if he isn’t going to F’ing shoot it off a feed!”

Cal is a great playmaker. Rarely shoots, but has great vision, hands, and playmaking skill. At this point, he’s a good mentor too.

Who else besides Leonard has left?

I know that Cooley has moved on.

I would love to see the behind the scenes story on this. There is definitely one there. I hope one of our local writers will get to it over the next few years. May need to wait a bit to see how ROR's play is here haha

I'm going to update this now with the Gurianov signing! Milwaukee roster so far:

Egor Afanaseyev - Fedor Svechkov - Joakim Kemell
Zachary L'Heureux - Nolan Burke - Denis Gurianov
Reid Schaefer - ?McCarron/Jankowski? - Anthony Angello
Navrin Mutter - Jasper Weatherby - x
Cal O'Reilly*
Jachym Kondelik
Tye Felhaber*
Carson Gicewicz*

Marc Del Gaizo - Jake Livingstone
Spencer Stastney - Jordan Gross
Kevin Gravel - Roland McKeown
Adam Wilsby - Luke Prokop
Keaton Thompson* - Jack Matier
Griffin Luce*

Yaroslav Askarov
Troy Grosenick
Gustav Grigals*

* = AHL contract only

It's enough bodies for the AHL team (barely), and a few to bump to Atlanta. But I would still have expected some slew of ahl-only contracts that might give us a player or two for the Ads and a bunch more for the Glads.

Could they be waiting for guys to understand they aren't getting NHL deals and are then willing to sign AHL contracts?

No idea. Or they've already got a bunch signed and are just waiting for "Mission Accomplished" on a last few to announce them all en masse.

I see guys like Rueschhoff and Cole Schneider have already signed AHL-only deals elsewhere, though.

D minutes in Milwaukee will be competitive. I am interested to see how that shakes out. Maybe I will have to spring for the full AHL package for Milwaukee this year. I sure enjoyed their broadcast crew.

Yeah, the top-7 group in Milwaukee is kind of like the top-7 situation in Nashville atm also. If everybody was healthy both places, one regular-quality defenseman would be sitting every night both places.

You will not regret it. Best money I spent last year. Being able to watch all the games gave me a much better picture of what the prospects are doing and where they’re at in their development. This year’s team is going to be loaded with prospects making it even better.

The opinions people form based off of a handful of 5-10 second video clips are quite hysterical sometimes. I forget who it was that was trying to say Askarov was NHL ready after admitting they’d not watched a single game gave me a good chuckle.

Aaron Simms is possibly the best play by play guy in the business.

The next time I get a chance to chat with Aaron, I will pass that along.

We are lucky to have him in Milwaukee. I am always afraid that an expansion NHL team will snap him up. He isn't crazy enough for Vegas and isn't mild enough for the sleepy people in Seattle.

The Admirals signed Dman Griffin Luce.

We have 10 dmen under contract that should be in the minors and 7 dmen at the nhl level.

Molendyk can go back to WHL i believe but all the others are all too old.... so.... i reckon we sending some to the ECHL as well

I was surprised since Milwaukee already has Keaton Thompson under contract.

How many Dmen do you need?

Well, they used 11 last season, which is probably pretty typical? They probably start Luce, Prokop, and Matier in Atlanta, I would guess. :dunno:

Atlanta has 3 players signed themselves:
F - Mitch Walinski
F - Cody Sylvester
G - Tyler Harmon

... but they'll need a lot more. I don't know how the protected lists and qualifying offers really work in the ECHL, but they did give qualifying offers to several other players, which apparently have a July 22 deadline.

Assuming we send Grigals, and a couple forwards (maybe Felhaber and Kondelik?) there... they definitely need a bunch more players.

Felhaber is a good regular season player, just not a playoff guy due to his small size. Kondelyk is a giant who can't play worth a darn and can't fight. He can go to Atlanta. When the season is over, he can take a plane back to his home country.

The Ads used 11 due to injuries and call ups to Nashville, plus a few in Milwaukee.
The season before, the Ads used 13! Fourteen, if you count Wilsby in three playoff games.

From the June 3rd roster versus CV. Del Gaizo, Gravel, Stastney, McKeown, Gross, Thompson (AHL), Matier (never saw him play), Wilsby and Bouchard (8 Dmen). I saw Bouchard during several warm up sessions, but never in a playoff game. They did try him at wing several times in the regular season. He played like a third Dman at times, lagging behind his forward linemates. He would add size to the lineup, but he doesn't pick up stupid penalties.

In the regular season, there were also Cameron (2 games), Sidorski (5) and Cairns (7). Matier would have been #12, but the team was probaly not keen on throwing a 20 year old out there against 26 year old men in the playoffs. Matier in Atlanta sounds like a good idea. He can play all of the time instead of 20 games in Milwaukee.
