Player Discussion Mike Matheson

He had a couple of big shot blocks on the PK yesterday. I think sometimes he tries to do too much when he's out there.
Exactly why he got stripped truthfully we were sucking bad at that point and he was trying to make something happen. Defense first has been his game for the most part and he isn't anywhere near as bad as last season with those killer turnovers.

Most disturbing stats you'll see today

It's not about what he's getting paid it's his usage. You can be getting paid 5 bucks a year for all I care, if you're thrown out in the most defensive of situations and you try to dipsy doodle through the slot as the D and get the puck taken and it ends up in your net, I'm going to be pissed as a fan.

Hutson did this quite a bit at the beginning of the year and I hated it. He makes ELC. This isn't about money.
u can talk about 1 play in a vacuum or you can take the collective of his work, he's our most used dman and we're sitting in a playoff spot

if you play 25+ mins every night you're gonna see plays like that and ya you'll see them more with Matheson just cus that's his style, the team accepts that

You can tell when Matheson has had a bad stretch because the same media guys and r*dditors will come out saying he's our most reliable dman and who else will eat those minutes blablabla.

Playing a lot of minutes badly does not a good defenseman make.

Except habs are winning.

It’s hard to talk about anything and not come off as having a polarized opinion these days. I hate his brain farts. I don’t see another D on the habs that can do what he does well.

I wish he played 20 easier minutes and habs managed his usage. Hutson now has pp1; hopefully some 1rd can magically spawn.

He’d be a winger if he played forward, Hutson would play center… Matheson needs to read-react and keep it simple. So many fancy things he tries crash and burn lol.

What does he do well? Hes directly responsible for a goal scorer per game against us and probably 3-4 other high danger chances. Hes basically late career Kaberle without the offensive flair.

… Maaaaybe Guhle can skate with guys like McDavid and co? I don’t think he should be relied upon like he is, he’s playing above his skill and salary.

I've said it so many times... but if he just passed the puck to the open man and moved his feet he would be so much more effective. The coaching staff should have a video session with him, with the POs coming he has to get rid of those unnecessary turnovers, it will cost the team.

I think they just need to dial back his minutes now with Guhle and Hutson playing on the same pair. He was a good soldier during the tank years in the #1 role and insulate the young defencemen while helping in transition so our forwards got puck touches. At this point I just don't think they need the help anymore so we can put Matheson down to a #3-4 role where he's a better fit.

Spreading the minutes is a little different when it's Matheson-Hutson and Guhle-Carrier since you want Hutson playing more, but if Hutson and Guhle are playing together they should be the no-doubt first pair.

Carrier and Guhle both have less offensive zome starts % and a higher QOC. Im not sure why we cant stick to facts. Matheson isnt the main horse and hasnt been since we acquired Carrier.

Ill say we wont win anything with him on the team, and Ill even say that Matheson will never win himself. I doubt he ever makes it to the 2nd round, even. He hasnt touched it at 30.
Ideally we would replace him with a RHD that has great mobility but way more stable defensively.

How disingenuous - you can say that about the whole team (excluding Savard - who had a very limited role in the couple of months he played with the Lighting when they won their cup)

If your take away from last night is that Matheson was a net negative on the outcome of the game, then you have MDS...Matheson Derangement Syndrome.

Re-signing Matheson would be my first real blow to my confidence in Hughes.

Every other move he's made so far I can at least get the logic behind it, even if it didn't pan out the way it should have (Dach trade, Newhook trade, Barron for Lehkonen, etc).

Re-signing Matheson at a raised price when he

a) doesn't play PP anymore
b) is way too risky with the puck and brutal defensively
c) We have multiple younger/cheaper guys waiting/coming

I wouldn't get or be on board with that at all.
If you and I know this

Then Hughes and especially Gorton know this

I know I freak out at the fear of him sticking around but truthfully I am Supremely confident they make the right decision and get rid of this guy

Any single person saying 'we'd be worse off without him' or 'we wouldn't be in a playoff spot without' have absolutely no idea what they are talking about sadly
The truth of the matter actually is : if it weren't for Mike, good chance we are actually in a *better* spot this year... (same goes for Savard btw)
Great mentors, so so players
The mentorships are finished now tho

Yes. Hopefully that can be Reinbacher...
I have absolutely no doubt he will be a much better defenseman but I was thinking on top of him.

Ideally Carrier on the third pair with Struble/Xhekaj.

Hutson-Reinbacher/RHD
Guhle-RHD/Reinbacher
Struble/Xhekaj-Carrier

Too much brain farts. And it's not only last night.

Matheson has the worst 5v5 GF/GA on team, stop. Facts are facts.

Savard was 3D for the Jackets team that upset the Leafs in 2020 and the Lightning in 19. He was the main shutdown D.
