Yup, that's the part where Trotz has said something to the effect that his game is still a little "noisy and he needs to quiet it down". Marrying his God given athletic ability and aggressiveness with fundamentals and an elite foundation could be something special.
Yeah, "messaging" cerian aspects (bad habits) out of his game will be vital. We can see that he is coachable and refining his style so I don't see why we should think it'll be a problem.
100% agreed, Pekka is the best "unorthodox style" goalie that comes to mind recently. He wasn't a hothead, but he flopped around as much as anyone. My frustrations with Pekka sound similar to what we're seeing from Askarov. He'll make some saves he has no business making, and let in goals he has no business letting in. Saros is much more stable, so we'll have to get used to that again, but I dont think we should change the way he plays.
Pekka did learn as he got older how to play more technical, he had to because he had gotten too slow for all that scrambling.

I will, right after you tell me the fundamental changes the position has gone through in the last 20 years that would make their style of play obsolete today, or tell me which of today's goalies you feel are on this same level. I understand the game has changed, and I agree, he's got to learn when to be aggressive, but to say he has to remain calm and settled defeats the entire reason you drafted him in the first place.
I don't believe they drafted him BECAUSE of his unorthodoxy... that's not how it works. They drafted him because of his incredible "natural talent", particularly with his legwork/reflexes/flexibility down low. All the while hoping that they'd be able to train some of that unorthodoxy OUT of his game!

And so far that is working. He's getting better. Particularly with his arm work.

I'm saying they don't want him to not use his aggressiveness and his athleticism. to his advantage and I'm also going to find the quotes were Poile talked about his rare skill.

IMHO, you don't want a quiet, calm Askarov. I want a cocky/athletic Askarov. That might just be me though.

Also, that sounds weird, I only mean it in a hockey way.

I think you all are saying the same things.

I think some of the unorthodox "issues" may come from him figuring it out himself rather than some coached style. Teaching him some technical fundamentals that compliment his aggressive confident athlete natural abilities is what everyone associated with the team has talked about.

Refining the movements and muscle memory without removing instinct will be the key. And that will be a give and take between him and the goalie coaches.

The Admirals (29-10-1-0) host the 5th place Chicago Wolves (16-19-3-2). The Ads are 5-1 against the Wolves, so far. They are going for their 13th straight win. Providence has six straight wins as the runner up in the AHL.

One of the refs is Jordan Watt (#83). I believe that he was one of the refs for the two games in Henderson. Ref Liam Maaskant (62) is a complete stranger to me. Adam Scheel is in goal for the Wolves.

The Ads start Troy in net. At LD, Gravel, at RD, McKeown. At LW, Weatherby, O'Reilly at Center and Felhaber at RW.

An Ads player was hit up high with a stick and then punched in the back of the head. No call or calls were made. That was ref #62, who looked at it from the near blue line. Ads puck carrier was tripped at the near blue lineand no call. Fest(er) just assaulted L'Heureux. They are cleaning some blood off the ice. This is all Ref (#62) lack of calls! No instigator on Fiest. The linesman were painfully slow separating the "two" combatants. Weatherby just hammered Fitzgerald into the endboards near me.

Finally, a penalty on the Wolves! Kemell with Parship and Janko. Ref #83 just called the Wolves for Hooking. Two man ad for 1:33. Ref #62 just called Tripping on a poke check by the Ads. He must be from Chicago! Fitzgerald just jumped Foudy from behind. Foudy gets a penalty. This is BS!!! Ads 2 men short for 1:30. Egor came out of the box for a backhanded shot.

Fitzgerald called for Tripping. Wagner just high sticked an Admiral, then cross checked him while he was down on the ice. No call. Some of the fans near me in the SE corner are standing up, pointing and swearing at the refs! I would describe that as highly unusual. The SOG were 10-5 Admirals.

To recap, we have one pretty good ref, #83; and one Evil ref, #62. It is like Ying and Yang out there.

The Wolves have talked to the refs the whole game even though they have benefitted from the calls and non-calls. Adam Scheel, the Wolves goalie, has been in the ear of Ref #62 a lot.

The 2nd period has started. There is a small pond behind the Admiral's net. Egor nudged Franco, who got up slowly and may have a dislocated shoulder. It is strange. Egor may have scored. The review says no. The puck radically changed directions, so it hit something, the crossbar, the post, the support post? (Karl Taylor said on the post game show that the Admrals set a record for the # of post hits. I remember 6 in one game, but that was during the IHL days.) Ref #62 just called Ponomarev for Slashing. A Linesman practically had to drag him off of the Chicago bench. He made 3 separate points and 3 comments at the Admirals bench. How is that NOT a penalty?

Schaefer (3) breaks the ice to put the Ads ahead 1-0. Earlier, they hit the middle of the crossbar.

Continued below.

Svechkov (18) had the single assist on Reid Schaefer's goal.

Chris Terry took a dive and Parsnip boarded him in the SW corner. The Wolves have taken several dives this game.

Chicago scores a PPG after McKeown breaks his stick to make it 1-1. At the end, Wagner slashed an Ads player and when he tried to get him back, Marino jumped him and dropped his gloves. It went on for a while as all 10 skaters were involved. Only Wagner received 2 minutes for Hooking. The SOG were 11-5 Admirals.

By this time, I would like to fight Ryan Wagner myself. He is 5'8" and 185, so he outweighs me a little. I would be happy to punch that dirty punk in the face about 100 times.

When period 3 starts, my daughter and I predict that Ref #62 calls a penalty on the Admirals during the PP. It seems to be a bad habit of his.

Chris Terry was talking to the officials before the starters arrived for the face off.

The puck trickled through Scheel's legs and just wide of the left post. Kemell (11) scored with assists to to Egor and Gross. It was at 1:06, so Maaskant did not have enough time to manufacture a penalty. The Ads are swarming. Chicago's defense consists of whacking Admirals with their sticks. No calls, of course.

Ref #62 with the phantom Tripping call. The Wolves player skates hit together, he wasn't tripped. So what else is new? Schaefer comes out in one second. Felhaber with a wicked backhander out of the SE corner. Scheel nearly missed it. There is 7:44 remaining.

Jankowski just deflected a shot inches over the crossbar. That would have been the clincher. There is 5:39 remaining.

After killing a penalty, the Ads go on the PP and then miss a ENG. One minute remaining. Now an ENG by Egor, with an assist to Jankowski, making it 3-1 Admirals. Rocco Grimaldi looks like he wants to retire from hockey.

The 13 game winning streak ties the franchise record. Troy had 18 saves against an underskilled team.

Tomorrow night at 6 pm CT, the Ads play 2nd place Texas, who is 14 points behind them. They may need a Cheap Trick to win #14 and set a new record.

Time to get Cheap Trick back out to The Brat Stop for the first time in 50 years.

Granted that's terribly played by the PK but that shot is still something else...

That's not great form on the block attempt but that's not exclusive to the AHL, we see out of position block attempts by the Preds PK all the time.

The shot is hard and accurate but I'm more impressed by the the puck movement and changing the shooting angle that happens in a split second and how quickly he gets around the block and shoots with such little body movement.

Yeah, we've seen guys like Gurianov, Fagemo, Tolvanen to a lesser degree that have the hard accurate shot, but Kemell seems to have this part of the game that you need to be a big threat at the NHL level.

Edit: to articulate better by "lesser degree" I mean I think Tolvy had more of that goalscoring acumen than the others I mentioned but still struggled with it at times.

The Admirals (30-10-1-0, 61 pts) host the tied for 2nd Texas Stars (22-17-2-1, 47 points).

Askarov, the starter, was injured during warm ups. Troy will play in goal again tonight.

Same refs as last night Watt (#83) the good ref, and Maaskant (#62) son of the Devil.

The Ads are going for their 14th straight win. Texas has won 3 of their last 10. The Ads have won 3 of 5 versus the Stars. Askarov is not on the bench!

Kemell (12) scores on the PP, with assists to Gross (13) and Afanasyev (21) at 8:17 into the period. It was their only PP SOG versus Matthew Murray. Texas tied it a few minutes later. The SOG were 14-4 Stars.

After two periods, it is still tied at one. The SOG were 10-6 Stars. At 20 minutes, Mastrodonato and McKeown get 2 minutes for Roughing. Milwaukee has not been able to get any sustained offense going.

Near the end of period 3, the Ads have a PP.
The SOG were 10-7 Stars.

It is going to OT 4-on-3 Ads advantage for 1:43. Janko won the draw. Ads with 2 SOG so far. Texas takes their TO baby! The Ads have 34 seconds remaining of PP time. Kemell shoots over the net. Now 4-on-4.
No SOG for the Stars in OT.

We are going to a Shoot Out. Troy is 20-12 and stops 75% of shots in SO.

Foudy does not score. Troy saves.
Gross scores 5- hole. Troy saves again.
Egor does not score. Troy wins the game!

Gross is 12 of 20 in SO and contributed to both Admirals goals tonight.
Troy is the big hero!
Fourteen wins! A 53 year Ads record.

The Stars are chasing the refs around and complaining as the Ads celebrate.

Man askarov goin down sucks. Hope it isnt a long term thing and more of a tweak. Kemell scoring is a good thing. Afanasyev got an assist on it as well. He's officially at a point per game.

how did he go down?
I don't know. Aaron Sims, the radio PxP guy, did not seem to know.

Edit: Aaron Sims just said before the start of period 3, he has "no info on the severity of the injury". Askarov has never come back to the bench.

Swelling in that area never good
My wife just confirmed a throat hit via Face Book. She was at the symphony with our daughter. There was a Marquette basketball game at 5 pm. It was a busy night in downtown Milwaukee!

Maybe Grigals comes from the Everblades for Tuesday's game versus Chicago?

Was he on the bench during the game or did they even have a backup?

Our seats are adjacent to the bench and we arrived shortly after warmups. There was no backup goalie the entire game.

edit: No transactions for a goalie yet for the Ads but Atlanta did play yesterday afternoon in Indianapolis so likely coming today.
