After 3 games, no skater in our team has more than 2 even strength points. Keep that in mind. If the separation in even strenght points gets larger between the "star vets" and the kids after say 10 games, then you start to worry.

Obviously, maybe PP2 should actually score sometimes. I haven't been able to watch but 1 game so far, so can't really comment on how it has looked but probably no different than previous years.

PP2 is still abysmal. Maybe I shouldn't come and read here in the morning because it gets my nerves going. Like somehow force-feeding Laf or Kakko on the first power play unit will miraculously result in production when they can't even look competent on any power play no less five on five with the same veteran players for sustained stretches.

fwiw kakko has looked fine to me. he has got some chances and generated some chances and they just haven't quite gone in yet. if this team wants to "develop" him they need to keep him there and let that stuff come. this is where gallant took that line apart because it wasn't sunshine and roses right away

It's not just about the raw points. It's one thing if they were snake-bitten.

They aren't jumping in and making a difference. Kakko is invisible on that first line. It's like Kreider and Zibanejad are the in crowd and Kakko is fine with the Jesper Fast support role instead of figuring out how to make it a dynamic threesome.

And if Lafreniere can't figure out how to get his offensive activity up with Artemi Panarin, then he will never even be Ryan Strome. And that's sad because if Ryan Strome is what we are HOPING Laf can turn into, it's a massive failure. And it doesn't even look like he can become that, at this point, so "massive failure," is an understatement. Generational failure.... on someone's end. Not trying to make this about whose fault it is.
Oh for sure, that's a different discussion. I would just like to remind people that people who score points in this league, a lot of their work is done on the powerplay. Last year, there was only one top player who got over 1PPG on even strength: Nathan MacKinnon (77 EVP in 71 games). So before jumping to conclusions on "0.33 PPG", let's look at how their EVP looks after at least the bare minimum of 10 games to get a sample size.

If you are disappointed in how the kids have looked, that's fair. I watched Saturday against Columbus and that wasn't a good game from the kids, especially Kakko who needs to pick it up.

He's looked like a 40 point middle sixer who is being forced into action on a top line with linemates who out talent him and he's just happy not to muck it up.

Fine is an apt word.

We need our second overall pick to be elite. To be Aleksander Barkov. Or at least, like, Andre Svechnikov.

I've advocated changing Trocheck to Kakko on PP1, but that should've been experimented on the pre-season. You are not doing anything to PP1 now, unless it completely falls off. It has worked for many years now, Strome to Trocheck didn't really change that. Our PP is at 30%, #6 in the league. Nothing to complain about.

Rangers beat two bad teams. They still haven't faced an actual playoff caliber team yet. We'll see how it works out when they start to play good teams.
Buffalo is not a bad team; the Sabres are going to beat a lot of teams this year. Rangers played them almost perfectly because the Rangers are *good*.
The story of this year for the Rangers is going to be about the playoffs; can Lavi outcoach the other guy, and get the most from EVERYONE. Rangers are fine, shouldn't have any problem getting into the playoffs.

It's also the set pieces. Even if they are on PP1, they can't be expected to do anything of substance when it's almost always Zib, Kreider and Fox who are the focal points. The plays work around them.

Their shifts while maintaining possession in the offensive zone have been a lot better this year, but they need to figure out a better way to get more touches in the middle of the ice off of their cycles. ARI actually did this pretty well last night at points, so start with taking some looks there.

I get the patient approach of cycling > low-to-high passes > point shots > win puck battles > repeat, but it's going to be harder to generate quality chances from it. They did this well against BUF having the high F in the zone make short passes in the slot, which let them push their defense to the top of the circles. Getting some more of that back in their game will help their 5v5 scoring go up. Otherwise, their best aspect has been off the counter attack from turnovers at the opposing blue line and in the NZ. That's been fantastic to watch.

The 4th line doesn't look bad because of Bonino lol

Kakko made the first goal happen with a defensive play

The first line was very good in the first period against the Yotes, especially the first few shifts. Then that crap 2nd period happened and all the penalties. In the end Kakko had good advanced stats from this game.

And at least now the coaches are trying to find ideas that work for PP2, Gallant never gave a shit.

Pp1 still needs to work in a different play once and a while, the long feed one timer is predictable. They need to draw the forwards to the d by switching up plays instead if constantly forcing that play. I liked when Panarin walked in with it and shot, it's plays like that that will spread the box out and open up for a one timerr

Really glad they got this win but the 60 minute effort is something this team needs to become known for. They just go through some stretches where they appear uninterested and the slow play really makes it easy for the opponents to take advantage. Luckily Arizona was not skilled enough to get it done but I’d like to see a real 60 minute effort closer to what we saw in Buffalo more often.

The 60 minute effort complaints might be the dumbest in all of sports. The other team has professionals too. Are you really expecting the team to outplay the other team for the entire game?

I don't think anyone can get on this team for not putting forward a "60 minute effort" when the refs are handing out PP's to their opponent like they're f***ing candy and on a second look, Goodrow shouldn't have been whistled for the PS either. Anyone else realize that they weren't really "wow'ed" by anyone in last night's game? Thats because they spent a decent amount of time on the PK 40 minutes into the game. There are a bunch of guys who don't play in those situations and it completely wrecks the rhythm and flow of the game for them.

These refs were complete and utter ass last night and the Rangers held it together and still won against a team that is honestly not that bad. Thats way more impressive than the mythical "60 minute effort."

Sure, the kids aren't scoring again, but first of all, Lafreniere should have 3 points.

He was robbed of an assist in Buffalo because f*** you it's a road game. That play was no different from Kakko's assist last night and it's an assist at MSG. The offside in Columbus was obviously a close call.

I don't hate the way the kids are playing. You can't measure anything over 3 games but points are the worst because points are random. You create looks and you ultimately have no control over which looks get the bounce. Perfect example above.

See where it's at after 20, 25 games. And even then, if the team is playing well, leave it alone. If Panarin is on his game, we have a star winger. It's a long-term issue and this is the team we have right now.

The one thing I wouldn't do is f*** with the lines when the top 9 has been effective, or even, God forbid, put them back together on the stupid f***ing Kid Line which definitely doesn't produce points over large samples.

The 4th line doesn't look bad because of Bonino lol

I don't really mind Bonino as he at least has value somewhere.

I think the mix on that line is bad and I definitely feel like we have in house options that are better than what they're sending out there (beyond Vesey.) I've harped on how much speed has become overrated in today's game, but that line definitely needs more juice.

Aside from throwing them out there yesterday to protect a 1 goal lead with a minute left despite getting their asses handed to them all night, they've been deployed properly. The issue is that despite that, they've had a grossly negative impact on the games so far. They could have easily lost last night's game (one in which they were clearly better) because of their 4th line and that shouldn't happen.

The good news? Its an easy fix and quality 4th line bodies are not that hard to find. Whether or not they have the balls to scratch Goodrow is another story entirely.
