I really appreciate Sam’s efforts to improve our Puckdoku skills by listing all the former teams of guys like Kerfoot, Zucker, Bjugstad, Durzi, etc. during the broadcast. It’s going to give me a lot of confidence if the Coyotes are on it tomorrow.

Yuuuuup

Probably got told that when he got to the bench as well. Dude needs to play in straight lines for a bit to get his head into the game before he starts trying to get tricky
The new normal is save the fancy stuff for *after* the defense breaks down. Gotta start these plays north-south and then when there’s a scramble the east-west stuff can work.

My takeaways on this one:

  • Good first period...pace of breakouts was much better. When the second period became a special teams battle, the team got away from this and struggled with zone entries as a result.
  • Second/third period officiating was brutal. Missed trip of Panarin, weak call on Schneider (in comparison), ref blows a Panarin partial breakaway then they have the gall to call a penalty on the same sequence in a clear case of "that probably wouldn't have happened if" and then add on the BS unsportsmanlike on top. Then, Rangers get a powerplay, Keller interferes with Fox ON THE DELAYED PENALTY, Rangers have the puck and the refs blow the play dead. Only the original penalty is called on Dumba, and he's not given anything for unsportsmanlike which given his yapping was an excellent opportunity for a make up call to fix the abomination that was the 2nd period. The failure of the refs to handle things (no penalties for the Lindgen/Laf/O'Brien/McBain scrum?) was exactly why the end of the game ended in a scrum. Never mind the missed boarding call in the first period that shook up Lindgren which no doubt contributed to some of the hostilities that followed.
  • Sidebar, league needs to look at the delayed penalty rule. In 30 years of watching hockey, I have never seen it called as inconsistently/badly as the last two seasons. Unless there is a serious injury, the play is supposed to continue until the offending team touches the puck. Stop blowing the whistle when the non-offending team has the puck, especially in the offensive zone. Twice in three NYR games, and happened a bunch last season too. I hardly ever remember it happening before the last 5 years. Reinstruct the refs on this one.
  • Bonino looks finished. He has value at winning faceoffs, but not much else. If he's going to be in the lineup, he should not be taking a regular shift - just use him to take draws only. He should be working on his skating every day in practice. It's awful. Looked like me out there.
  • Vesey > Goodrow and it's not even close at this point. But because of that stupid contract, Vesey sits. Disappointing. Vesey's also better on the RW than LW, and between Goodrow and Pitlick, doesn't seem like he's going to get a lot of looks there. My hope is they'll eventually settle on keeping Vesey in there at 4RW and let the others sub in/out as needed, based on who has the hot hand, unless Jimmy has a bad game and he needs to sit in response.
  • Schneider needs to stop pinching. I don't know if it's a holdover from the Gallant days, but his awful read directly caused the breakaway/penalty shot. He held the puck in at the point, had two passing options, and chose to carry deep, which is idiotic. Then turned the puck over, and his side got beat. Goodrow was already down low, read it, and went back, and didn't get there in time (not being particularly fast), but that's a moron read with a one goal lead. Either take the cross ice passing option, the one right in front of you, throw it on net, or dump. There's literally no reason to carry deep. His decisions with the puck have been slow and bad thus far.
  • The Rangers still clearly show signs of hangover from the Gallant era, but the systems are definitely improving. The offensive zone cycle is still hit or miss though. When they use the cycle to move pucks with purpose, and to force plays to the middle of the ice, they're a much better team. When they whack the puck aimlessly around the perimiter and end up chasing it because the pucks are cycled haphazardly, rather than to specific players with specific roles, they look like last year's team that cycled the puck for 50 second shifts only for possession to end on a bad pass or a muffin from the point.
  • Trocheck's goal aside, I still think he has no business on PP1. His reads just aren't there to play the bumper well. He missed a couple PP reads where all he had to do was read puck in corner with teammate possession, and try and beat his D down low collapsing from high slot to slot, and he probably would've had a tap in. I'd much rather see Kakko line up at the RW half wall to one time pucks (and give a counter to Mika so that teams and goalies can't cheat that way) plus it keeps 20-93-24 together which will only help them produce together as a unit. Trocheck on the 2nd unit is a much better fit in front of the net for rebounds/deflections than Kakko or Laf and this also allows him to take PP2's draws instead of Chytil/Laf. With the units getting more even PP time, I think this is a simple and easy/wise adjustment whenever the coaching staff sees it.
  • Cuylle's instincts out there are pretty great so far. Very pleased with him this year. Leaps and bounds improvement over last year. Knows when to shoot, when to carry deep, and when to pass.
  • Would really like to see Chytil get one (that counts). He put in a lot of work in the offseason and it sucked missing most of the training camp games, but he's buzzing out there at times, and I think scoring one would help his confidence quite a bit here. I like the line of him, Laf, and Panarin (though I hope the coaching staff will work with Laf on his offensive zone positioning and movement without the puck), and Panarin looks a lot better than last year, but we'll have to see how it holds up as all dumping on him aside, he did get off to a pretty good start last year too.

This game, like the last one, could have been 3-0 rangers early and a laugher. In today's case they missed some golden chances. Arizona's defense stiffened, they are impressive. They hung around and eventually the officiating did it's worst, as usual. And we have something of a nail biter. But I liked what I saw in general. Good bit of traffic in front of the Arizona goal and the defensive systems looked sharp. Thought everyone played well for the most part. The top four defensemen were especially stout.

Feel like Key and Schneider, being young, are having a hard time adjusting to Lavi's system. I think they are going to need more time to gel. At least I hope that's true.

No way you would convince me Zib did not eat a steak before the game, or at least the third period.

I love a victory and won’t fault anyone for celebrating. But I can’t get too excited about this team’s future while our kids continue to tread water.

I just don’t see a path forward when we continue to rely entirely on guys like Panarin and Kreider. It’s not sustainable. Fox and Shesty are amazing, but it’s not enough.

Next game, two of Kakko, Laf and Chytil will get a point, there will be a bunch of “ThE KidS r aLrIGHt” posts and then we’ll all be happy for a night. Then they will all go three games without a point. Nothing has changed and it’s incredibly depressing.
Hard to consistently produce points when they're still getting extended time sitting on the bench between shifts because of no meaningful special teams time. Different coach, same BS. Despite that Kakko got an assist tonight and Laf has as many goals as someone getting several more minutes per game.

Rangers beat two bad teams. They still haven't faced an actual playoff caliber team yet. We'll see how it works out when they start to play good teams.

Where the F is kakko?

Got what he wanted. He’s on the top line. I don’t think he has a shot even attempt thru 3 games.

Best moment is a chip into the neutral zone to spring Mika for the Kreider goal

Really glad they got this win but the 60 minute effort is something this team needs to become known for. They just go through some stretches where they appear uninterested and the slow play really makes it easy for the opponents to take advantage. Luckily Arizona was not skilled enough to get it done but I’d like to see a real 60 minute effort closer to what we saw in Buffalo more often.

I honestly don't like when the goalie gets in the middle of it, its like when girls get in the middle of fights, it makes things worse and they're usually in the way unless they are fighting the other goalie.

Dumba is pretty lucky Trouba was blocked by Igor. Completely deserved the ass kicking he was going to get for escalating the scrum

Im glad Bonino and Wheeler got 3 games before fans started turning on them (despite the fact that they've both been way more good than bad). People must really miss Kevin Rooney and Julien Gauthier in those spots lol.

The 3rd line in particular looks great. Wheeler can backcheck and pass well so Trocheck doesnt need to be fumbling the puck all over the ice on zone entries. Cuylle's game is very advanced for his age and experience level. He will be a wrecking ball when he adds 10 pounds.

I mean Boninonand that line were objectively terrible last game. If they can’t be better the rangers need to find better players there. A few “good defensive plays” don’t matter if they’re because you always get trapped in your own zone no matter what

Couldnt care less about their xGF numbers when they kill penalties like they do. Every other line is well over 50%. Nitpicking considering the PK has been one of the biggest bright spots early on.

When the PP stops overfeeding Mika for predictable 200 ft one timers they will be more dependable.

Slow starts for the kids does not give me a ton of confidence they have overcome their personal mental barriers. Their biggest enemy is between the ears.

Regardless of who we put the blame on - players or coaches - Kakko, Laf and Chytil are all at 0.33 ppg.

Yeah, it's 3 games in. So what? We are back at these guys being afterthoughts to driving the offense. There is no change. Cold streaks happen but we would see more activity by now even, if these guys were primed to make a jump.

This is all they will ever be. This was the last year for them to show that they are capable of stepping up into dynamic, offense-driving players.

It's failure and with it go any realistic Cup hopes.

After 3 games, no skater in our team has more than 2 even strength points. Keep that in mind. If the separation in even strenght points gets larger between the "star vets" and the kids after say 10 games, then you start to worry.

Obviously, maybe PP2 should actually score sometimes. I haven't been able to watch but 1 game so far, so can't really comment on how it has looked but probably no different than previous years.

It's not just about the raw points. It's one thing if they were snake-bitten.

They aren't jumping in and making a difference. Kakko is invisible on that first line. It's like Kreider and Zibanejad are the in crowd and Kakko is fine with the Jesper Fast support role instead of figuring out how to make it a dynamic threesome.

And if Lafreniere can't figure out how to get his offensive activity up with Artemi Panarin, then he will never even be Ryan Strome. And that's sad because if Ryan Strome is what we are HOPING Laf can turn into, it's a massive failure. And it doesn't even look like he can become that, at this point, so "massive failure," is an understatement. Generational failure.... on someone's end. Not trying to make this about whose fault it is.
