There's this thing called the Instigator. Guys can cheapshot and refuse to drop gloves and if you go after them you get kicked out and put your team on the PK forever.
....and at times, it's a penalty worth taking.

If tough means gets their ass kicked anytime they drop the gloves and badly ..then you are right about Burish and Petrecki. "as tough as it gets" though ..hahaha come on.
Seriously though, Clowe is a guy who sticks for all of his teammates and does it by beating the offending player up badly. That's a pretty nice thing to have around your star players. Ask Gretzky about McSorley. There are certainly repercussions for running the stars when Clowe looms. Just saying.
Agree to disagree. It's a deterrent. The guys who actually play the game value that trait in a teammate.
except it isn't, because no one EVER follows through. Goons fight goons, goons do not fight cheapshotters. I challenge you to find even a few instances where that is not true. Cheapshotters only ever fight the person they cheapshotted.
There is no question that Clowe would be missed by us Sharks fans.. He's given us some memorable moments in Sharks lore..I feel the same way about Murray. Time to move on.Clowe has run his course here and should be moved..Maybe this upcoming draft will have the next young PF..DW is sitting in a great spot right now. Heck if RC really wants to sign here and take a major paycut next season then he comes back after being traded.
I could see DW moving RC and a 1st for someone like Voracek/Brouwer.....He loves those 1st's. Still think Grabner would be a great fit, good contract and speedy..
Please show me the last time this happened, bonus points if you can find one that didn't end up with a goal against his own team on the ensuing powerplay.
Also, McSorely specifically did not have to deal with the instigator penalty, which was exactly my criteria.
That penalty is worth taking sometimes, I'll admit, but its VERY rare, and is almost never done.

Here's the deal...players like Ott, Burrows, et al are always going to try to play their game no matter who is on the other bench. But if there is a guy on the other side that you know is going to get in your grill (or lay you out with a big check), it will be on your mind. If there's a guy who you know is a crazy SOB and will straight beat the tar out of you, instigator rule be damned, it WILL cross your mind. And every moment that a player is thinking about his own ass instead of playing the game makes a difference. It might make a cheap shot artist think twice, or hesitate for a second, or perhaps be thrown off the game because he's checking over his shoulder the whole game.
I don't want to overstate this point or make it out to be a huge deal. Like I said, it's not going to neutralize the opposition completely. But I do think it's an important ingredient to have on the team and a reason why the players who actually play the game at the highest level highly value guys who stick up for their teammates.
Would be a bad idea to trade a 1st and even worse to trade Clowe and a 1st for Brouwer. Voracek and Grabner aren't available either.
Only for something outstanding ala 1st, Bluechip + 2nd for Clowe
And you know this how?????
Nope. I like him too much. I know there are better, but I'm thinking with my heart on this one. No apologies.
I want him traded, unfortunately this team will not win the cup. It would be stupid to not get something back for clowe
Really? In my dream last night, we beat a Crosby and Malkin-less Penguins team to win the cup.
We can beat the Pens. All we need is for Niemi to stand on his head. Their goaltending is a joke.
Kurz says a deal could happen tomorrow
