Seriously though, Clowe is a guy who sticks for all of his teammates and does it by beating the offending player up badly. That's a pretty nice thing to have around your star players. Ask Gretzky about McSorley. There are certainly repercussions for running the stars when Clowe looms. Just saying.

Please show me the last time this happened, bonus points if you can find one that didn't end up with a goal against his own team on the ensuing powerplay.

Also, McSorely specifically did not have to deal with the instigator penalty, which was exactly my criteria.

That penalty is worth taking sometimes, I'll admit, but its VERY rare, and is almost never done.

How many times has Torres or Cooke gotten beaten up for cheapshotting? The reason why they might not do it anymore is because they're repeat offenders and would get suspended for half the season and they don't wanna lose half their paycheck. It's not because they're afraid someone's gonna go after them on the ice. If someone bigger than them goes after them they'll just run to the refs and hide or just turtle. They don't have to answer the bell and they won't. So having a crazy mofo like Eager or Clowe on your team would just put your team in the penalty box.

except it isn't, because no one EVER follows through. Goons fight goons, goons do not fight cheapshotters. I challenge you to find even a few instances where that is not true. Cheapshotters only ever fight the person they cheapshotted.

Orr v. Kaleta.... but that situation only proves your point. Orr is a goon that fought a cheapshotter, and got ejected for it. The damage ended up being.... Toronto was down a player for the rest of the game, and while not a good player, a warm body is nice.

There is no question that Clowe would be missed by us Sharks fans.. He's given us some memorable moments in Sharks lore..I feel the same way about Murray. Time to move on.Clowe has run his course here and should be moved..Maybe this upcoming draft will have the next young PF..DW is sitting in a great spot right now. Heck if RC really wants to sign here and take a major paycut next season then he comes back after being traded.
I could see DW moving RC and a 1st for someone like Voracek/Brouwer.....He loves those 1st's. Still think Grabner would be a great fit, good contract and speedy..

Would be a bad idea to trade a 1st and even worse to trade Clowe and a 1st for Brouwer. Voracek and Grabner aren't available either.

I'm sort of torn. On one hand, I love Clowe and the team has been playing much better this week. We could keep him and go for another deep playoff run if the team keeps playing this well. On the other hand, if we keep him and end up missing the playoffs or being ousted in the first round again, and then Clowe walks as a free agent, I'd be upset that we didn't get something for him at the deadline. Right now I'm leaning towards trading him because I don't see this team winning the Cup this year and I don't see Clowe re-signing with us.

Tootoo and Sarich got some payback from Clowe off the top of my head. But that's not as important as the amount of running around that gets negated just from him being on the roster.

Here's the deal...players like Ott, Burrows, et al are always going to try to play their game no matter who is on the other bench. But if there is a guy on the other side that you know is going to get in your grill (or lay you out with a big check), it will be on your mind. If there's a guy who you know is a crazy SOB and will straight beat the tar out of you, instigator rule be damned, it WILL cross your mind. And every moment that a player is thinking about his own ass instead of playing the game makes a difference. It might make a cheap shot artist think twice, or hesitate for a second, or perhaps be thrown off the game because he's checking over his shoulder the whole game.

I don't want to overstate this point or make it out to be a huge deal. Like I said, it's not going to neutralize the opposition completely. But I do think it's an important ingredient to have on the team and a reason why the players who actually play the game at the highest level highly value guys who stick up for their teammates.

Guys who hit help the team, for sure, and Clowe does hit, but my point here is specifically about fighting in order to 'keep people honest'. It doesn't exist anymore, it's a thing of the past.

young roster player with upside + 1st + bluechip... I don't think Clowe is worth quite that much, but I understand that you'd want something that can actually be of use to us.

This exactly. I want him to retire a Shark. He's been my favorite player since he set foot on the ice in a Sharks sweater. Sometimes I can look past how much I like a player and say I could deal with them being traded, but that's not the case with Clowe. I would be bitter every moment he played for someone else.

If DW has decided that he is not trading Clowe I really hope that he can re-sign Clowe before the season ends. Clowe is going to get more money elsewhere as a FA.

Personally I am neutral to keeping Clowe or trading him (for a good return only).
