Yes guys, I'm sure instead of telling the kids "shoot more" he just reunited their line and told the media instead of them.

You can think of GG is being a bad coach and not say really dumb stuff.

There's a heck of a lot more to being a coach than just telling players to shoot more.

Is he working with Laf and Kakko about how to get open in the offensive zone? Is he teaching them how to back off defenders carrying the puck in the zone? How to read defenders, lurk in the offensive zone, engage then back off the D to create a passing lane in a shooting area? How about how to read each other so that the one with the puck knows how to time the centering pass? Skills wise, are they practicing full speed carries of the puck up the ice, then rapid changes in direction at full speed upon zone entry with quick release of the puck accurately on net in practice...so they are comfortable letting it rip in a game situation?

Or is he just telling them they need to shoot more, and practices just consist of situational scrimmages between the different lines, and practicing breakouts, which is a hallmark of mediocre coaching? And the "coaching" just consists of telling players what to do in set plays that are part of the coach's "system?"

If you had ever run a hockey team (you haven’t, I have) you would see things much differently.

Maybe.

Care to identify the problems with this roster that us non-professionals do not see or are aware of?

I cant even imagine why almost half the folks here want this guy fired.
The most disposable thing in sports is a NHL coach.
Unless Drury fancies himself stepping in.
Cant find a single beef with G's coaching of this team.
Yeah. That’s my thinking too. There’s no coach that’s gonna change the nature of the core players of this roster. The only coaching change that would make any sense would be if Drury steps in to evaluate the roster.

because we look like a team of Ortmeyers and Glass at forward LOL

I'd love for you to do video sessions with them and break down your YouTube videos
I wish the forwards had some more ortmeyer and glass in them. Those guys stuck their nose in it. These guys now are way to averse to digging.

Let's be clear. The dead offense is Gallant's "system"

When they were scoring 3+ goals every game at the start of the year was NOT Gallant's system, which is why he was pounding his fist and talking about the need for defense and structure.

Now they have structure, suck, and can't score. The offense looks as dead, slow, and uncreative as it did at the end of the Tortorella years. Let's whack the puck around the boards in for 50 seconds in the offensive zone, generate nothing but two point wrist shots - one which misses wide, and the other that is easily saved - and call it "offensive zone pressure." No. This system sucks, and they will never score playing on the outside like this.

And the coach's only solution is to put grinders on scoring lines for "balance," and to constantly punish the same players who are doing what they are told. Or to stack one top line with 3 veterans so their stats will look nice, but the other 3 lines produce nothing. Hey, maybe Igor can stand on his head and we can win 2-1! I am good at coaching guyz!

It's asinine, and I want him gone.

And this is not a case of just hating the coach and wanting them fired. This is someone who is sick of coaches who run the joint like middle managers coming in, not communicating with the players, not setting expectations or buy in, actively impeding the team's progress, then doing destructive things to "shake things up" while ignoring all the obvious things that need to be done. This guy is AV 2.0. Same stubornness, same clinging to things that are proven to not work, same scapegoats for everything he doesn't like.

Organizationally, other teams do not do the things the Rangers do and are better for it.

And I am NOT a fan of Drury - I would have much rather continued with JD/Gorton - but our owner is a dipshit, so now the guy that made the worst Rangers trade in ~30 years is going to get another decade to learn on the job, the team will churn through several coaches mired in mediocrity while wasting the generational talents they actually do have, win 0 Cups, and another generation of scoring forwards will be utterly wasted.

Same as it ever was.
And this is why the team remains mired in mediocrity.
Since you are so down on GG's "system", would you please tell us exactly what his system is?

The problem I have is that the front office really hasn't changed as much as people seem to think it has.

People complain about coaching as it is. Imagine the reaction if AV was Torts' assistant, Quinn was AV's assistant, and Gallant was Quinn's assistant.

People sure as hell wouldn't think it's a different staff but somehow the executives are.

The front office are the people setting the expectations and putting all the infrastructure in place for development.

You can say it's just not a thing and the poor unlucky Rangers got back to back 2OA and 1OA picks that 100% of scouts violently whiffed on. I don't agree with that and at the very least, I think it's worth exploring if improvement is possible.
Yep. For me, out of the coach, the front office, and the players, the coach is the least responsible for the outcome. The coach can screw up things, sure, but for the most part it’s the players doing their thing and the front office picking the players.

This is hilarious.
This isn't a Bantam B team. Do you really think what you wrote is some sort of sage advice to professional hockey players?
Sure, there are drills that are run to work on specific areas of the game and a coach may pull a guy aside after practice to tell him something they see that is pretty glaring, or, give them an evaluation at the end of the season for things to improve over the summer, but what you wrote is the issue with most fans in a nut shell. They think they know more than a guy that has been around the game and professional players their entire life.
You fire a coach if his team stops playing hard for him. Do you think Rod Brind'Amor is running some kind of unique "system" in Carolina? It can be argued that their roster, top to bottom, is better than the Rangers, yet the Rangers made it to the ECF last year. Nobody in Carolina is calling for RBA's head. Wonder why?

It's not really a good question to be asking now while the team is in a playoff race. It would be stupid to dump him and his staff now and bring in a new staff. It very well could cause the team to flounder and end up out of the playoffs. You don't cut a coach in midseason with your team in playoff position unless there is a very very good reason and there isn't one or enough of one now. If the team fails to make the playoffs or if you want to change after the season and playoffs play out or if the team gets off to a very slow start next year it makes a lot more sense.

Go higher...Sather is the puppet master here, has been forever, coaches come and go, same old thing, they hired their yes man in Drury. I'm just happy Gorton was able to convince Sather for 2 years that we needed a tear down because otherwise this team would be stogged with 35+ has beens.

The Sather puppet master thing is so played out. He is 80 and when was the last time he was seen around the Rangers or spoke publicly about them? I guess if he was the one who put a gun to JD & Gorton's head to give 20 mil to Trouba & Panarin it would makes sense but something tells me that is unlikely

While he may not be "calling the shots" per se, he definitely has some say and/or influence in the decision making. I believe the Panny decision came directly from the top (namely, The Dolt saying to do whatever it takes to get him here). Don't know who made the decision on the Trouba contract -- probably the same fool that decided to sign Redden.

Sather is a crutch to never blame anything on the GM. Drury, Gorton, Davidson and Sather have all made plenty of mistakes and plenty of good moves, like every other GM (see boogeyman Yzerman's tenure in Detroit so far). Mistakes were made during the Rebuild, but it's not an exact science and the Rangers have come out of it looking pretty damn good. Compare us to team's that have been rebuilding for 10-15 years, and they didnt even have the decency the Rangers org had to at least warn us lol. We're in a good spot now and long-term, many have lost sight of that due to an uneven but good first half of the season.

I'll tell ya what else is played out, the Potvin Sucks chant. Hearing that guy whistle makes me cringe from home now even lol.

But I agree, I don't know how hands-on Sather is at this point.

I thought there was a perfect opportunity to change it to "Wilson Sucks" after the incident, but has Wilson even played a healthy game at MSG since then?

I guess that would be better than Potvin sucks, but it's kind of pathetic. I get how hated he was in a Crosby-esque was being a phenomenal talent on a close-to-the-heart rival.... but to me it's like, what the hell are we holding on to with this one lol.

Wilson sucks would have been better as at least it's modern, but if we have to hold on to it, change it to Crosby sucks. Guy has killed us for almost 2 decades.

And to not let this post be a complete of the rails squirrel post, I am falling more into the camp of being okay with GG gone. I don't want it exactly, and I'm not even sure the right option is out there right now, but some of the in-game decisions on lines and then defaulting to this crap. You can see why his laid back approach catches up to him IMO.

I am pleasantly surprised that sanity is winning out, here.

Yet we still can't develop offensive forwards. There is only one constant among all of those people who could contribute to this. And it isn't the owner who doesn't know shit about the sport.

How much longer do we need to wait? Sather has been with the organization in some capacity or another since 2000. It is now 2023. That's almost 23 full years of poor development of offensive forwards.

How much longer do we need go wait before it becomes even more painfully obvious that this organization has an offensive prospect development problem? Another 23 years? Do we need to let it go a full 50?
