Nope, managing the team would be one thing...Managing the team with EM constantly interfering would be something else
I agree with you, this past season was a stacked deck where everything seemed to be against us. Even still, it's going to be tough to make the playoffs next year with Tbay, Carolina, Tor, Bos, Wsh, Fla, NYR and Pens all looking like they should be good bets to make it, and then teams like CLB, NYI, being on the bubble.I see a lot of mentions of us being 30 points out of the playoffs. It was actually 27. In a year where it took 100 points to make it.
Skipping the COVID season's and the shortened season, looking back it took 98,97,95,93,98,93,92,88.
I can't be bothered to do the math to calculate an average but the 100 this past year is clearly an outlier. Pacing at 90 or better has us playing hockey with playoff implications in March.
Let's hope for a more favorable schedule this season. IIRC last year our schedule had us starting with a 20ish point deficit to some of our rivals based on schedule difficulty
There was a graphic I saw last fall that depicted probability based on back to backs, playing rested teams etc that showed us literally starting the 20ish point deficit I noted above. I can't find it though. I did find this quote
That was the worst in the league for that stat.
- The Senators play only five games against teams coming off a back-to-back. Unfortunately, a growing team in a very difficult division didn’t get any favors with the schedule.
I think that this upcoming season that we finally see a regression from teams like Boston, Pittsburgh and Wash.I agree with you, this past season was a stacked deck where everything seemed to be against us. My expectations for next year is to get into that bubble group with CLB and NYI. Expectations might change depending on what happens in the offseason though.
What’s weird about Fiala is that Dorion followed him around for awhile and then seemed shocked at the sticker price.
His deal is pretty much in line with his value given his age and production.
Don’t think he was shocked whatsoever, I also don’t believe for a second they weren’t prepared to pay him what he wanted. What’s weird about Fiala is that Dorion followed him around for awhile and then seemed shocked at the sticker price.

Dorion has totally fleeced Sakic in 2017 !!!
Yes, Sakic could have received Batherson or Formenton instead of Bowers who hasn’t played a single NHL game yet.
Could have been a total disaster for us if Batherson was included in the trade for Duchene.
I wonder if any of them were offered to Sakic and he instead insisted for Bowers…
We both know that missing out on big ticket players isn't the main issue at play. This intellectual dishonesty isn't a good look. Everyone knows Dorion has been GMing with his hands tied behind his back. I give him a lot of slack for the Melnyk minefield he has had to navigate. The issue most of us have with Dorion is that he makes terrible choices with the little resources we do have. What kind of GM in the process of a rebuild is spending assets to take on cap dumps from other teams? The org can spin the Hamonic trade any way they want but we did Vancouver a favour and paid them to do it.I’d be curious to see a sub poll of how many of the 69 posters who voted that they could outperform Dorion thought Fiala would come here….
I feel like most of these voters think guys like Fiala, Dumba, Forsberg, Cobb etc are realistic targets and if they actually knew how razor thin the player interest was in coming here they would change their vote.
Hamonic will either anchor the right side this coming season with Chabot making him a top pairing RD believe it or not, OR he will mentor Sanderson on his right side which should really help Jake have a veteran presence with him & a tough one to protect him too. Hamonic was a good signing he will help them, they may have over paid who knows but they needed a better RD in their lineup than what they had. Hamonic & Holden on the PK were really good & the PK in general was much better this past season. We both know that missing out on big ticket players isn't the main issue at play. So how would the 69 people who are smarter than Dorion have sold Fiala on Ottawa vs SoCal ?
There is no Jedi mind trick or smooth talk that closes that sell job.
If you think you can outperform Dorion you need a massive reset regarding the way your evaluate hockey stuff.
Sure, I won't disagree there. I didn't even really mind Hamonic's play. The problem is we overpaid for an asset they badly wanted to get rid of. We managed to trade a 3rd round pick for a player no one else wanted. It isn't like this was some kind of bidding war, we had 0 competition for a player they needed to get rid of and with all the leverage in the deal we gave up assets. Philippe Myers is an RD who is 6 years younger and has similar underlying numbers to Hamonic was available the day before on waivers.Hamonic will either anchor the right side this coming season with Chabot making him a top pairing RD believe it or not, OR he will mentor Sanderson on his right side which should really help Jake have a veteran presence with him & a tough one to protect him too. Dorion being a bad GM has nothing to do with Fiala lol.So how would the 69 people who are smarter than Dorion have sold Fiala on Ottawa vs SoCal ?

The amount of money he's allocated to bad players on a budget team is inexcusable. Matt Murray had a sub-.900 save percentage and was coming off major injuries before Dorion tossed him that monster contract. It was an absolutely boneheaded move.
Source?
The deal was all the more remarkable because there were no other bidders involved. The Senators were the only suitor for Hamonic, the only team that expressed interest.
Not sure how much I can quote on here from an athletic articleSource?
They squeezed a third out of Dorion for someone who wasn’t liked in the dressing room and nobody else wanted. Dorion is not a good GM, I’m sorry. Not sure how much I can quote on here from an athletic article

The Hamonic Thing
Lots of folks around the industry were stunned that the Canucks were able to jettison Travis Hamonic’s entire contract without taking money back in the deal. That they got a third-round pick in the process was gravy.
It was, truly, an unlikely and remarkable heist. An indication that when gauging market value, all it takes is one sufficiently motivated buyer to upend the preconceived notions of an entire industry.

f*** McKenna.Maybe just by being a better human you know . Like not having guys like Mike Mckenna being so vocal about how he was treated by you
McKenna was a consummate pro here by most accounts. Not especially inclined to believe this.f*** McKenna.
Bitter that he got turfed. I can imagine the groaning if he was kept around.

Same old shit. Blind loyalty is never a good idea.McKenna was a consummate pro here by most accounts. Not especially inclined to believe this.
