The teams future looked so bright until he came and slowly the team has gotten worse and worse year after year with nothing to show for it.

I said it once and I'll say it again, Lou was the guy to take us further and Dubas is a scrub. Yes, he signed horrific deals with Zaitsev and Marleau but he would have found a way out.

Now we just ride it out, hope they can somehow pull it off and perhaps rebuild...again if it doesnt work.

I had faith that the team had a direction and was developing an identity.

The further we go the more I see that there isn’t a method.

The trades we’ve made, the players we’ve signed, the effort on the ice by key members of the team.. where did we go wrong? Dubas and Shanahan jumped the gun too quickly. We had it all going right but they’ve taken the team off the rails completely.

I don’t know what the solution is but I’m terrified that Dubas is going to make a stupid trade involving another first round pick that doesn’t yield results and further prevents young talent from entering the organization.

The Marceau contract was easy one to fix, don’t sign taveras and give matthews and marner bridge deals, you would have loads of cap space. And since you had loads of cap space, you could afford to keep Zaitsev on the roster

To be fair, Zaitsev actually had an important job on the team.

He was the best on the Leafs in shutting down the cycle which was a big team weakness. He's doing pretty well at that in Ottawa now too.

Lou understood player roles and the jobs players need to do to compete in the playoffs.

The problem with him though was he couldn't move the puck to save his life here. And the Bruins forwards did a great job keeping the puck on his side when they were in the Leafs zone during that last playoff series.

Regardless, I believe he requested a trade anyways

Except sweet Lou tried to sign Stamkos the year before and would have tried for Tavares as well. Do you really think he wasnt going to sign Tavares?

Once the jerseys start to hit the ice, Dubas will be fired - mark my words.

I think the only thing keeping this management team intact right now is the turmoil at the top of Rogers.

And I'm not even mad anymore. I didn't make this mess so why should I really care. Certainly not going to lose any sleep over this clown-show of an org.

The turning point for this team was the Tavares signing. I felt it was unnecessary but had hope that it would all work out -- and so far, it seems as though that hope is pretty much gone. That signing as necessitated the jettisoning of all kinds of depth, year after year.

I really don't have any faith that Dubas can get out of this because I can't see a way to do it given the salary cap constraints. The options are (1) ride it out; (2) trade one or both of Marner and Matthews; (3) keep Marner and Matthews and wait for Tavares to have a more team-friendly buyout.

We have no cap space, no picks, and no prospects. I don't even mind the idea of tanking this year -- we can sign Rielly cheaper and maybe get a top pick on an ELC. Maybe Dubas does know what he's doing...

It was pretty much a given he was willing to come no matter who was GM, I dont know how anyone could even debate that. He should have just stayed on the Islanders with Lou, they probably would have won the east or a cup with him on that team and with that coach.

Nope. Over the years that slowly faded. This is just brutal now. There goes wasted years with a generational first overall pick.

The circus continues. 55 years and counting.

Just nonchalant about all of this.

Trade Kapanen and Johnsson instead of signing them... there's the cap space for Marleau, and instead of being DOWN a 1st round pick, you're UP whatever we get back for two good middle 6 RFAs.

Leafs are basically missing a top six LW, third line centre and third line winger. They might also be missing a goalie, that’s up in the air. They’re just filling those spots with guys that don’t belong. I don’t know if Dubas has enough time to fill those gaps.

If only those were the horrific deals they had now.

I don't know why Zaitsev is so hated.

I agree with most of what you wrote but Reilly has to go. He’s terrible defensively, soft and they’ll never win anything with him as their 1D.
