Confirmed with Link: DJ Smith fired, Jacques Martin in as interim, Alfie as assistant

It's only this long of a process because DJ messed them up so bad. If we kept DJ, this process would start next September instead and 24-25 would be a write-off.

4 months of Jacques is going to give the upcoming coach something to work with. Can't see the results yet but I'm positive they'll come.

On a simple 2 on 2 rush last night, Chych was on the right side wobbling all over the place in two minds. The fact that he's fighting instinct means something is clicking in his head from the new coaching.

They waited too long to fire DJ. Martin takes over and we say wins and losses don't matter, which is totally fine, but what about the way they're playing? Does that matter? Cause in every single way you can measure they are playing worse, and it ranges from a little bit worse to a lot worse depending on the statistic. As uneven as they were under DJ how did their bad habits lead to much better PK numbers, better FO%, significantly better shots against per game, etc.

What's a bad habit that makes you perform better defensively, relative to what we see now?

It's clear DJ should have been fired but this is just about the worst possible outcome you could have imagined from a coaching change, no?

DJ clearly played a significant role in motivating players and he seemed to draw on that in his coaching style. It was never going to lead to long term success because it was entirely based on volatile emotions whereas long term success needs structure and an ability to draw on that instead of emotions for motivation.

It basically left them unable to cope with big swings in game momentum because too much of their game was based around it.

I just want to give Pierre Dorion a big hug and shake his hand. And Then Fist pump myself in the mirror

So you’d prefer a bottom 5 team under DJ where the coach and players are happy being a bottom 5 team and just trying to win pond hockey games off of our talent?

I’m happy the players are miserable - they should be.

re read my post…. I mentioned Berube, not DJS??

J Martin has been with Ottawa since December the 6th, and has had enough time to see what needs to be fixed,,and now he’s the Head Coach and is doing worse than DJS, did anyone want That?

a .273P% is unacceptable…and our rookie GM who indicated we expected J Martin to play out the season,,before being replaced,,better change his plan,,and bring in Berube, or anyone else….J Martin is not working!

.273 win percentage is brutal. But I don’t understand the reasoning to go back to DJ Smith who showed us nothing but how to make excuses and pamper 20 year olds who show nothing but skill

It’s ridiculous to think a new Head coach (hired in the off season) is going to build on whatever J Martin does, if kept for the rest of the season…..A new head coach is going to inherit a team that did not make the playoffs and he will bring in his system,,and hire his assistants…. we‘re wasting time, J Martin has made things worse than what DJS was doing…. In 11 games, 6 points, for a .273 P% record….again, worse than DJS…….the rookie GM needs to bring in a new Head Coach asap, armed with a two or three year contract….and get the substitute teach back up to his consulting position

.273 win percentage is brutal. But I don’t understand the reasoning to go back to DJ Smith who showed us nothing but how to make excuses and pamper 20 year olds who show nothing but skill

Holy crap, no one is saying going back to DJS…. How, many times have I mentioned Berube?

This is just a this year problem, it will 100% carry on to next season. Really bad situation in Ottawa right now

As much as we may envy the cash they make, and call it pro sports until we are blue in the face, these are not grown-ass men. They are current day 20-somethings whether we like it or not, and some of the key guys are young twenty somethings. Expecting high levels of maturity is a fools errand (not meant as an insult just a sign of the times).

G is a grown as man, as is Tank. I can understand why Staios is looking at that room and thinking that we need to add some grown ass men in there to help mentor and steer the ship.

They may not be driving the boat, but they can prevent it from sinking.

Teams wouldn't elect children to be their captains, and yet it's not unusual for a 20 something to be chosen. Theyre men, regardless of how old that makes you feel to admit it lol

You also don't need to be in your 30s to realize maybe you should listen to a guy who's been in your business for 90% of your life. That kind of attitude is fostered when you've grown up so far with little to no discipline or accountability.

The more guidance the better from vets, that goes without saying.

What would change if Berube came in aside that a supposed long term coach would be going through this painful process instead of an interim?

Like this team is so far f***ed in how they play and their mentality no magic coach is coming in and fixing it.

Martin as a short term let's them instill the basics for the next coach. Not to mention snuff out the problem players before the longer term coach.

If Berube was here now it would just be him getting destroyed by these players. Nice productive way to start a new coaches reign huh?

J Martin has the Senators playing at a .273P% since he took over as (interim) Head coach…… he has been with Ottawa since December 6th, evaluating and consulting….long enough to send messages and know who to play, and who to sit….it’s time for the rookie GM to bring in a Head coach, that the players know will be the Head Coach next season….right now they know it’s like when there’s a substitute teacher in highschool, they’re going to be here long than J Martin will be head coach….. Berube is willing and waiting…. What is the rookie GM waiting for, a .250 P%?
I understand the point you're making but if that's the case, trade every single one of them

This is the kind of thing that's complete bullshit

Chychrun has played 422 games in the NHL. He's had Tippett, Tocchet and Touring as coaches in Arizona with half his career under Tocchet who some here regard as some kind of genius coach. His Senators career is 49 games, 11 under Martin.

Do you really believe that playing 38 games under DJ Smith somehow deleted everything that Chychrun has learned about hockey? That his instinct for the game was completely wiped out?

when a New Head coach is brought in to a NHL, it is because the previous Head Coach was not working out, and changes needed to be made.

J Martin has come back to the Senators, beginning on Dec 6th, and has seen more than enough to know what needs changing, to his style of play…supposedly to improve the team…… now he has been Head coach, and every aspect of the team is worse, they’re playing at a .273 P% pace….

yes, he is an interim, and the players know he will be replaced, and the New Head Coach, Berube or whomever will bring in their system, not keep whatever J Martin wanted…. So why waste everyone’s time, we can all see that J Martin is worse than DJS, or the players are just waiting for the substitute teacher to leave, and start fresh with whomever (Berube) is the permanent replacement for DJS….. our Rookie GM needs to get things going here, there is no reason to wait until the off-season, as his plan was with DJS, and now with J Martin.

no, just one of Chabot, or Norris… someone with a comfortable long term contract, should be traded to acquire cap space, ideally a RS Dman… but doubt there is one available…. But mostly to shake up the remaining core members.

Chabot can be traded to anyone this season, but he has a M-NTC that comes into effect this July…so if he is the one to be traded, perhaps it’s the right time now

j Martin is just rearranging the chairs on the Titanic, and the ship is going down faster than when DJS was in charge, time for the rookie GM to step up and get everyone’s attention …make a major trade, and bring in Berube or someone else who will be the Head Coach, and not a substitute teacher that the player know will be gone sooner or later…

Yes and no. Have you seen what's happened to Sanderson? He's gotten to used to playing in this style and it's completely messed him up too. He comes into the NHL as a world beater and within 13 months he's worse than how he started. Same with Chabot.

They're not all of a sudden a bunch of low iq brain-dead morons. Something has changed in their heads. They're too used to playing with freedom and without consequence that they're not playing NHL level hockey.

It's confirmation when goalies, who have played behind hundreds of dmen, under many coaches in different systems all have their career worst numbers here.

How many coach would you try before trading Brady

I totally hear you, and I expect push back to what I'm about to say. I do think they're improving and playing better and building some good habits at the same time. I see something there. Maybe not "better" in the sense of doing it right or getting results, but believe it or not, I see a team that's more likely to be competitive if they can buy in, than the one under DJ that just sort of felt like they could win, but more likely to lose, any given game.

I also see changes to how the lines and players are being used and I'm appreciative of that. With DJ staying, so much of the problem was repeating the same process, so I'm happy this is at least "new". With the top guys not pulling their weight, I've liked to see the bottom of the lineup leaned on more, even if they're not great. It's change.

I also think there's some arguments in their favor. They lost 3 off the hop after taking over, but had some bright spots in there. Still not good enough, but season was lost already. The West trip is an absolute gauntlet and I liked them in spurts. They gave Edmonton a game at least. Arizona, Seattle, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary are all much better teams atm and in any single matchup would be expecting a loss more than a win against any of them. Plus being on the road for all of them. Edmonton and Seattle are on a torrid pace. Calgary is back above .500 after their awful start. Van has been tearing it up from day 1 and Arizona was hot until after that game. That's also where DJ's team cratered last year and looked arguably as bad.

But yes, I did expect more of a new coach bump from the change and DJ stayed too long. I would have liked to see the change when there was still hope. In hindsight though, more than any issues with Martin, it really brings to light how damaged this team is atm and needing some tinkering, so I'm not too concerned with that now. I don't think Martin is the answer, but it's a nice interim solution that at least relieved some pressure and I'm still fine with him for the year unless they can line up their permanent guy and give him the Tocchet treatment.
Well, I won't push back because it would imply that you're not seeing what you think you're seeing. If that's what you see, that's fine and we'll just disagree on that part.

To the bolded, all I can say is that different expectations create more flexibility in the capacity of the coaching staff to really send messages. DJ's directive was to win games, which means letting your best players get you there. Martin's directive is to teach and try to install a different mentality. Those are things that are not in sync with each other. You can't say to DJ "go out and win games, making the playoffs is what matters most" and then also expect him to invert his lineup because the best players have been most frequently at fault for repeating the same kinds of costly mistakes. That's something DJ used to do in the early going, which made people upset (kinda funny to look back on it now) when he would lean on the vets in certain situations while the young guys got acclimated to in-game situations and the variance of an NHL season. He no longer had that luxury. And funny enough it's something I touched on early in the season when people were saying he should bench guys who kept making the same mistakes and I would respond by saying he's being asked to win games and whether people like it or not he can't win games with the bottom part of the roster. Even if they play the "right" way. He didn't have the luxury of being a teaching coach anymore, he had performance expectations and the only bottom line was wins and losses.

But here we are now and the mentality of the fans has completely flipped because the season is over. This is why I'm so critical of Staios. The capacity to do something meaningful came and went while he stood by and didn't act. These things were evident early in the season to people like us who don't have professional experience evaluating hockey. It's completely incomprehensible how someone who's supposed to be overseeing all hockey related matters for this team couldn't see the same thing. And, even worse, the coaching change has done nothing but make it even harder for the fans to watch. At least if the team was playing more competitively and showing progress in different areas, the fans would still be inclined to watch with anticipation of the longer term vision. Now we're in a state of complete dismay and there's literally no silver lining on the horizon except the offseason hiring of a new coaching staff.

We're 3-8 under Martin/Alfie. Would letting DJ go 10 games earlier have changed anything? When was it that he could have done something meaningful?

On appearance it appears Sanderson's acceleration is generated mostly by his ears that flap vigorously as he glides on ice.

Early November or, at the latest, before the Sweden trip. There was so much time off built in around that trip. After the TB game on Nov. 4th, they had lost 5 of 6. From that point, to the end of November, they had 7 games in 26 days. They played 4 days after the Tampa game in Toronto. Would have been enough time that month to get a new coaching staff in place and take advantage of a light schedule to get practice time in, work on clearing their mental blocks and get things back on track, having only played 10 games up to that point.

Don't know why you let a coach lose 5 of 6 in the earliest part of the season and continue letting them coach another 16 games before you fire them in the middle of a road trip, with the heaviest part of the schedule in front of them.

Indecisiveness, inaction, incompetence.
