I know, that's why I said Poland needs Italy to win in any fashion. An OT Italy win puts Italy and Korea at 8 points each, Poland then leapfrogs both of them with a regulation win and then leapfrogs the loser of Austria-Slovenia if it ends in regulation. If Italy wins in regulation, then Poland needs Austria to win cause Italy has h2h tiebreaker. 3 way tiebreaker between Italy, Poland and Slovenia goes to Poland cause in their matchups Poland has +1 differential, Slovenia has -1 and Italy is at 0
Right, I misread your post

so if i understood correctly: only the first place guarantees promotion, but there is a decent probability that the second placed team will be promoted as well.

this is what i found at http://www.iihfworlds2016.com/en/information/ , quote:

"Note: If the co-hosts for the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship (Germany and France) end up in positions 7 and 8 in Group B during the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, only one team will be relegated – the 8th-ranked team of Group A – and only the winner of the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division I Group A will be promoted."

translated: it's up to hungary, who plays in group b with france and germany. hungary must finish last in that group to open another slot for a second placed team here. but will they?

i'm pretty sure this means austria and slovenia will fight hard tomorrow, no calculation by either side, as only a victory guarantees them promotion. it should be a good game!

This is accurate. If France or Germany finish last, only one team will get relegated (and neither of them will). But with Hungary in their group, it is likely both will be fine and the Hungarians will go back down, allowing the traditional two teams to be relegated/promoted.

It says "and" not "or". I think it means both of them have to be 7th or 8th for the rule to come in to play. So Hungary could finish 7th and would still be relegated if the 8th team is Germany or France.

Yeah you're correct. Was writing too early in the morning.

Point stands though, Hungary will likely finish last thus avoiding any issues. Nothing against Hungary, just what's probably going to happen though.

Austria is planning to not have Konstantin Komarek, our 5th best forward, in the game against Slovenia. That leaves us with only one top 6 forward (#6 Brian Lebler), so we should get to see a lot of Lukas Haudum.

Why would they do that? Is he injured?
Against Italy he has been devastating, totally unstoppable.

In the South Korean federation nobody expected that someone wants to watch their games on a crappy stream with polish commentatory. The numbers on the jerseys are not visible. :)

Yeah it's horrible.
Italy is winning 1-0 at the beginning of the second period, but I am not particularly impressed by the effort.
The pp is goin fine, but that's pretty much it.
The defensive system seems to rely a little bit too much on blocking shots to make me feel good about it.. Does not sounds to me like a good idea, even though it has been working so far.

Great goal by Tudin, much much better third period.
Italy 2 Korea 0 with 5 mins to go.

Larkin has to stop to take moronic penalties. He's supposed to be the good D in this team....

Italy holds on to win 2-1. 4 teams still alive for promotion. South Korea will stay up in Division IA

Well well. The Blue human wall did the job, even though the last 3-4 minutes have been rough.
How to almost destroy a 2-0 lead with a stupid tripping when your team has the puck.
Massive effort by Andreas Bernard, he is a great goalie.

Looks like Slovenia and Italy will all be promoted. So there are 4 teams being promoted to the top division?

Two...

And Italy is not sure yet, there are still combos where Poland can be promoted I think.

By 4 I meant all 4 of Slovenia, Austria, Italy and Poland are still alive for the top 2 spots and Poland is very much alive. An Austria regulation win and all Poland needs is a regulation win over Japan and they finish 2nd and get promoted barring Hungary pulling off some massive upsets and France/Germany finishes 7th and 8th in their group at the elite division.

So we might have three teams tied at 9 points for the second place.

Yep. This year the tournament has been great fun, I normally would not have spent so much time watching horrible polish streamings, but it was worth it.
Now an overtime in the next match would be disappointing :).

Austria wins in regulation or Slovenia wins in OT and Poland has a shot at the second place against Japan.
Slovenia in regulation and Italy would be second.
Austria wins in OT and both Slovenia and Austria are up.

Poland has no shot at promotion if Slovenia wins in OT. Even if Poland would beat Japan in regulation, Poland loses out in 3 way tie with Austria and Italy due to goal differential in games with each other. So, Poland needs an Austria regulation win or their hopes of promotion are over.

Or not?
How does it work if Italy Poland and Austria would end up at 9 points?
Austria beat Italy that beat Poland that beat Austria.
Who goes up in that case?

EDIT: my question was answered before I posed it, thanks for your efficiency JTD

draw written all over this game. most bookies with live odds closed the game already, some smarter (like pinnacle) even before, soon after italy scored for 2-0.
