They play 5 games in 7 days, then leads 5-1 in the third period. Off course they slow down and saves as much energy as possible for the game tomorrow. Makes perfect sense to me to be honest. It is not the goal difference that is going to be the decisive factor anyway. Belarus looked toothless in my opinion, a lot of shots but no efficiency.

Belarus beats Latvia, Latvia beats Denmark(both in regulation), and all get full points in their other game then it would be 3 way head to head goal difference tiebreaker no? Since head to head would be tied as well.

That's a tiebreaker that'd be hard for Denmark to win now, only if Latvia beat Denmark by 1, Belarus beat Latvia by 1, and it goes to head to head goals for, where Denmark would need there to be more goals in the Denmark/Latvia game than the Latvia/Belarus game, and less goals in the Latvia/Belarus game then the just played Belarus/Denmark game.

That is the correct order of tiebreakers right?

1. head to head
2. goal difference in head to head games
3. goals for in head to head games
4. total goal difference
5. total goals for
6. ???

If that's the case most of the time you keep the puck and try to avoid risks, not give the puck to your opponent and escape with a one goal lead so either it's not that or a very poor execution.

Considering Latvia has a brilliant goaltending and quite a few of Denmark goals today were softies I really can't see Denmark beating Latvia.

Well I agree it makes sense to save energy, but that is not really what happened in this case IMO, they were simply outplayed and actually spend a lot of energy chasing pucks.....

They had no play at all.....saving energy would be playing slowly and with control. They had in this case totally lost control of the match.

saving energy = taking 7 minor penalties in the 3rd, less player on the ice at a time means less players tired for next game :sarcasm:

Wonder if Poland will beat Slovenia. Looked good against better teams by destroying their games, but can they change their game against someone on their level?
Slovenia looked horrible in net, then again, they gave themselves up pretty fast against Latvia, today it could be a better situation for them.

How awful is Slovenian goalie.. Slovenians once again look like a better team, Poles shoot from the neutral zone, huge rebound and it's 1-0..

Estonia doesnt look to good. Croatia might have a chance against them not to be religated.

Estonia didn't look too bad in the first, but by the end of the second, they were clearly off their game. Could be that Hungary appears to start slow and build confidence as they games go on.

I think the Estonia - Croatia game might be closer than I would have expected before the tournament began.

Romania trailing Netherlands in the third...

....I thought Romania would win this one.

why? I think Hungary and the Netherlands are clearly a level above the rest of the group

I think the '94 group is relatively strong for Romania. One of their best players - if not best - is currently injured and didn't participate, but I thought they still might get by the Netherlands. The game today was closer than the score would indicate.

Next year will be tougher for Romania as they will lose Tranca and the Biro twins.

Hungary is above the rest of the group, difference between Romania, Lithuania and the Netherlands isn't big at all.

It is a strong one indeed but the Netherlands lost a close game last year and brought almost the same team this year (just that it was older and players improved, obviously) while Romania lost it's best players and difference makers at this level in Tranca, Gliga and Molnar. So the Dutch victory kinda makes sense.

Slovenians win it in the shootout and deservedly so. Poland seemed absolutely out of gas in the third period. I guess this means they stay up too because Poland really doesn't look like a team which could have a chance to win against Austria.

If Estonia doesn't look too good, we don't look too good at all. We look awfuly bad, confused in D zone, impotent in O zone. This team is complete mess and disaster.

Poland loses to Slovenia in a shootout. Unless they pull of some crazy upset in the next couple of days, it looks like Poland is going to get relegated.

You are right about that, but that really wasnt my point. I honestly cant see Belarus beating Latvia if they play just as bad as they did today. I dont think the first two rounds have shown any indication on how the three competitive teams in this group stands towards each other. First indication came today.

Now, I am not saying I am right about my presumption, but if I am, the final standings will not be determined by goaldifference.

Me neither, but I have not stated at any point that we were going to beat them. I have hopes, but the brain tells otherwise.

I wonder if Eller have made a stupid bet with his team-mates in Edmonton. They dared him to be the most penalized player at the WJC. I wonder if he would still be on the team if his dad wasnt the coach.

That Kegalj guy can really shoot it, at this level at least. 2nd in the tournament goal high-glove on a great shot.

He is one of the better D prospects we had in last several years. Thankfully for his good he opted to leave Croatia and develop his skills in Slovakia.

If it was so he could just have picked up a few misconducts and that's that. No need to pick up minors and hurt the team. I think part of his penalties are simply reckless plays (like that high stick near the end of the game today) and the other part is him trying to play with an edge to his game and IIHF refs blowing it as a penalty 3 times out of 4. He was just unable (unwilling?) to adapt to the IIHF refereeing where every hard hit is called because as his PIM totals in the WHL show the way he plays is just the way player with limited offensive skill is supposed to play in Canada.
