Disney Star Wars General Discussion

Looking forward to the next Geeks+Gamers video talking about how Chapek has announced the destruction of Star Wars.

The Disney films weren't that bad

- continued the long tradition of droids, brought us BB8

- plot was generally decent

- brought back EMPEROR

That being said I would still rank them below the originals and the prequels.

Of what you said, to me the worst part was bringing back Palpatine. It was a panic move after Star Wars fans rebelled against the terrible TLJ, they needed to ensure that people would line up to get in so they bought in the Emperor in every trailer. But honestly that re-iteration of the Emperor was awful. First they rammed a stick up his butt, then they had him talking in nonsense that made him into I don't know what, but wanting to enter and possess Ray was just dumb and a rip off of the subpar Dark Empire Comics with the really awkward line in the end where Palpatine wanted to enter the child when he tried to possess Leia and Hans baby. Palpatine was a panic move to Rian killing off the big bad like a Red Shirt, and their unwillingness to go all out with Ren being an un redeemable villain which was the direction they should have gone in.

If you split this into three sand alone movies the plots of those movies are decent, when you mash them all together it really makes no sense as an overarching theme, mainly because Rian's story was a 90 degree turn from TFA and TROS should have been named Rian F'd us so here's some horses in space and Palpatine.

BB8 was cool, but they bought in his buddy droid in the last one to sell Lego sets. R2 D2 really did nothing and the C3P0 line that he wanted a second to remember his friend was doubly bad because he really did nothing in the trilogy and they really hadn't established a relationship with the new generation.

To me it was a mess, and mainly due to writing and overarching plot. They had such a strong cast, and they um acted their asses off and put in good performances, but it couldn't save the ST. The biggest thing is that while Disney is rolling out their TV shows for Rogue One and other ones, you don't hear about the actors in the ST being all fired up to be in the universe or bring back their characters again. That says a lot.

Merchandising for the sequel trilogy has also been god-awful. As an example, a month or two back Hasbro released 50th anniversary edition of action figures and they completely left out any characters from the sequel era. They even had a Jar Jar Binks figure. It's pretty much a dead IP.

The ST didn't do anything really iconic in terms of new ships or vehicles or even characters. So I can see where we didn't see a rush to it. I mean you had the Star Destroyer from the first and second movie that was a bit different, but tie fighters looked the same, X Wings were re skinned, I know a ton of BB8 merchandising sold. Then in the third movie they just rolled out old star wars stuff. The new star destroyers were just laziness, They didn't put a big effort into world building and merchandising vanished.

The ST both bombed, but didn't do anything to create a new cycle of merchandise to sell. IT was all either reboot or reskinned. I could make my own model of the new Star Destroyer by putting some red stripes on an old one and gluing a hair dryer to the bottom.

We were encouraged to bump this thread to trash TLJ, so I'll do the honors.

Out of curiosity how many people know what a Revan is

Cause I sure don't

If its not a character in (some of) the films or related to the Decipher collectible card game, I don't and have no reason to care.

That's just gatekeeping. How you engage with media is your own business and you have no say over how anyone else does.

It's a character from a Star Wars video game (Knights of the Old Republic) that was part of the Expanded Universe/Legends.

The funny part is you could say the same thing about KOTOR fanboys and their lack of knowledge of Mara Jade or Thrawn (or any other EU book character). It's just silly gatekeeping that values the pieces of media that a gatekeeper enjoys while disregarding those that they don't.

Some people need to feel that they're bigger fans than others. There's a poster here who repeatedly does it with Star Trek. It's childish. Liking everything with the franchise's name on it doesn't make you a bigger fan, only a bigger fanboy.

I am a KOTOR fanboy and I know who Mara Jade and Thrawn are... and I do not care if people do or don't know them.

I agree, stupid gatekeeping. Let everybody enjoy the content the way they want to enjoy it.

Not much of a surprise there. That was probably the show I was the least interested in anyway.

In other news, apparently Dave Filoni was made an executive creative director last year and people only noticed when Disney updated their website. Seems odd they wouldn't have announced it when it happened given how much goodwill Filoni has with the fans.

Disney has deliberately suppressed acknowledging Filoni as much as possible without making it look like they wana take him out back and Ol'Yeller him.

Filoni is the present and future of ST.

I can think of a couple reasons why Disney/Lucasfilm didn't announce his promotion last year. With rumors of Kennedy's contract unlikely to be extended and the de-canonization of the sequel trilogy (however reliable/unreliable they are), and Disney actively distancing themselves from the sequels, wouldn't be surprised if Disney was scared they might start a firestorm if they announced his promotion when it happened.

There's another possible reason they didn't announce Filoni's promotion, but it's probably best I don't get into it.

I know this thread is about the movies/shows but I’ve got to tell you I spent three hours in Galaxy’s Edge in Disney World yesterday and guys holy shit.

Rise of the Resistance is one hell of a ride. Seriously. The hype you hear around it is true. It’s an absolute blast and worth the insane hoops to go through to get on it.

The rest of the park is wonderful. The care and craft they put in to making things look like a weathered, rocky planet is phenomenal. The experiences outside of Rise and the Millennium Falcon ride (I skipped it as I didn’t feel like the hour long wait, next time) are very cool. You can spend $100 to build your own remote control droid that’s pretty big, 12 inches tall or so.

I spent the $200+ to make my own lightsaber and the whole experience was great. Your host tells a fun story of scavengers finding scraps that you’re about to use to build your hilt. You choose a red, purple, blue or green kyber crystal to go with the blade you’ll get. You also choose between four looks for your lightsaber.

We drank the blue milk, more smoothie than anything dairy (it’s rice milk instead of milk). I had a boozy Coruscant Cooler since I’m a bourbon guy. The cast members have specific language they have to use to keep you in the experience. There are roaming (well not so much now because of the times) Kylo Ren, Stormtroopers, Rey and Chewy that will interact with you.

Seemed like a great time to be at the parks. They’re still limiting capacity by about half. Masks are optional outside of lines and on rides. There are still crowds but they’re not overwhelming.

If you’re a Star Wars fan of any era this place is absolutely worth the visit. For three hours I was a kid again living in a world of Star Wars. I’m hooked. I’m sold. I can’t wait to go back.

Now Epcot and drinking today.

I haven't seen any reliable source claim that.
